Is there a way to tell Sonar to never load a device? [SOLVED]
* If my GT-100 is on and connected (via USB) and I launch Sonar, the system crashes requiring a reboot. * If I unplug the USB or turn the GT-100 off, Sonar loads fine. - (In that case I can turn on or plug in the GT-100 and Sonar will ask if I want to use it, I say no, and all seems to work fine.) My question: Is there a way to tell Sonar to never load that device, thereby omitting the on/off routine when I load Sonar? Thanks.

Hi. You should be able to uncheck it in Preferences, Audio, Devices. I do this with my POD HD 500. All the best.

For the GT-100 to be on that list it has to be connected. If it's connected while Sonar is loaded it crashes the system. So I have to turn it off, then load Sonar, then turn it back on and when Sonar detects it and asks if I what to use it, I have to say no (or it will crash). Having said no, I can work in Sonar with the GT-100 kept off. I have to go through this every time and that's what I'm looking to avoid.

First of all, good to see you back The one thing I don't understand is if you don't want it to load, couldn't you just keep it disconnected? Or is the issue that you can't load it on boot, but you might want to use it later? I'm assuming the latter, so here's what I'd suggest. 1. I noticed there are new drivers and revs on the Roland site. Make sure you have the latest, and also that you follow Roland's installation instructions to the letter. If they say spin around three times while hitting Ctrl+J and yelling "bleeple bleeple," do it. 2. Try plugging into a different USB port. 3. Delete the Aud.ini file. With the GT100 disconnected, restart your computer, and let SONAR build a new list of interfaces without it. Then, try plugging in the GT100 and seeing if it loads the Roland driver. If that doesn't work... 4. Delete the Aud.ini file, restart your computer with the GT-100 connected, and let SONAR build a new list of interfaces with it. And of course there's the usual computer BS, it is a USB 2 or 3 port, turn off power management for USB ports, do you have a choice of ports you can use, etc. etc. Good luck...

Do you not have another way to connect the GT-100 to your system? Spdif, XLR or jack / trs? I have my POD HD 500 connected both via Spdif and USB, but only use USB if working with a preset editor. All the best.

My workflow is that I use the GT-100 constantly, with the editor open so I need the USB connected for that. (Unless i'm missing something, those 2.00 drivers have been up there for quite a while. All my USB ports are spoken for and everything works correctly except for this so I don't want to start moving things around. So isn't the Aud.ini supposed to be in "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum"? I don't see it there. Hmmm. Right now I use Sonar for 2 things. I use a lot of MIDI-Hits.com files for gigs and they offer them in the *.WRK format which is likely to have things like lyrics etc. that MIDI files won't have. Also I've been toying around with using the playlist live for playing my backing tracks audio. But the iPad Pro is sooooo much more convenient... we'll see.

I need to use the USB to keep the editor open.

I was really hoping there was a command that would go into an initialization file that would keep Sonar from loading a specific device.

Check out this page. Roland is showing a version 2.10 system update to be used with the v 2.1 GT-100 driver. I'd recommend making sure whether or not you have the latest versions installed. Next, not sure what operating system you're using but IIRC multi-client MIDI support didn't exist until Windows 10 and I assume the editor is using MIDI to communicate. That may be one reason for Roland doing an update. The AUD.INI file is located at C:\Users\[you]\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum. You can also access it from prefs.

It's actually a Boss Product so I wouldn't have expected Roland to have the drivers before Boss. Weird. I'm on Windows 8.1 but it was working fine. Don't know what changed. The AUD.INI file is located at C:\Users\[you]\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum. You can also access it from prefs.
I'll try that when I get to a good stopping point and post back. Was it Ctrl+spin around or Alt+spin around? I never get that right...

I did the system and driver updates, as well as the Aud.ini process but no joy. I'll just live with it. There are far worse things to worry about. Anyway, I definitely appreciate the assistance, Craig.

I'd like to toss in a welcome back, as well. :) I was going to suggest what Craig had already typed in as option 3 from his list - sorry I don't know of another way to do that. I wonder WHY that being present kills Sonar. Bob Bone

I wonder if the issue could be the dreaded MIDI Port Limit...not sure that was fixed until Windows 10. When I mention it, most people say "I don't have that many MIDI devices connected, can't be that." But, Windows remembers every device you've ever plugged in and reserves a place for all of them. The only way to see the hidden devices in Sound, Video, and Game controllers is running a batch file--just checking "show hidden devices" doesn't show the "ghost" devices. There are more details here. Might be worth one last try.

As you might remember, I''m reluctant to dive too deep into trouble shooting because I've had a lot of issues with Sonar in the past and it has usually lead down to the dreaded "rabbit hole". All these responses were good and started me actually thinking about the problem and I decided "what the heck", it would be nice if I didn't have worry about this. So, I decided to put on my troubleshooters hat and just give it a go. Basic stuff, square one, the first thing I should try is a different USB hub. Done. Problem solved. It turns out it was the well known USB 3 ports not really downward compatible issue. Moved the GT-100 to a real USB 2 port and now I can even use it as an audio device in Sonar. Craig even mentioned this earlier in the thread. Thanks to Craig and Bob for the kick in the pants that got to work the problem. Maybe I'll mix some stuff in Platinum and check out the new features. I'm way behind n Sonar Platinum since my use has been limited and I've probably forgotten a lot and have many new things to learn.

Sometimes it's the simple stuff that gets you. Other things to try if the above doesn't work: 1. Apply compatibility mode to the drivers. Even if you're on, say, 8.1 and they were working in 8.1 before, set them to 7. 2. Fall back to the previous driver version. 3. Reset the system to a previous date if you've made recent system changes or installed new software. Maybe there's a conflict.
