Is there "danger" in installing new codec packs?

Media Player 11 (Vista 32) has 3 mpeg4 video codecs installed, but it won't play mp4 files?

I found a free codec pack on download.com but I'm hesitant to attempt installing it as I fear it changing the audio performance on this machine.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice I might consider?

Many thanks...
Keni

I use k-lite pack. Never had a problem with it. You can choose which ones you want. Beware of the extra k-lite MediaPlayer install though. It is a great one but who needs two or three media players?

Thanks John...

If it allows me to select which codec to install I'll feel safe. I imagine the k-lite media player is an extra that it tries to install with pre-checked checkbox?

Is the k-lite one of the free codes collections available?

Yes and yes. The mediaplayer is a good one but unnecessary. All the codecs are free.

I have installed K-lite on my old XP computer, because when media player will not support playing a movie, that is the codec installment that allowed me to play DVD movies on the computer.
Never interferred with anything else like with the audio codecs, the computer or program just uses the codec needed at the time to not have the dreaded codec not recognized error come up or codec not supported like in Windows Media Player when it does not have a codec to use for the use it is being used for.
