Is this Indian spammer posting with Tor? If so.....
This is really beginning to stick in my craw. What a loser. If it's the case that his IP can't be banned because it's changing all the time (and I presume this forum software has the ability to ban IP's) then there's a good chance he's posting through the Tor network. Complete lists of current Tor nodes, which are frequently updated, are readily available for example here: https://www.dan.me.uk/tornodes - this one is updated every 30 minutes. I have no idea if Cakewalk is already blocking Tor nodes, but if it isn't then PLEASE would you consider adding them to an IP ban list because TONS of this spam BS is posted from them.

Ideas? He's a full scale forum spammer. Of course he's using some kind of proxy. And even if I've just enlightened him (her/it) with the idea of using Tor, then adding Tor nodes to a ban list would put paid to that.

And then he just goes ahead and signs up for a new account from another email address, using a proxy to do it from another IP. We can either sit back and put up with this BS over and over, or Cakewalk can take steps to ban posting from proxies. It's certainly possible.

Yeah - he is already unable to actually get any more content posted - you will see it in the list for a short while, but the message thread content will not get accepted, and his profile name will be deleted. This crap usually show up around this time in the morning, and folks tag it as spam right away, so it's not too bad, other than the guy being a douche in the first place. Bob Bone

I got # 3.. Last night it was the same time I think and I tagged a dozen, they were showing up as fast as I could tag them. I created another account and logged on in a different browser and tagged them again. They were only on the page for 15 minutes. I also reported abuse,, Is that a good Idea too?

I DO happen to completely agree with you - the Cakewalk folks have been frequently made aware how much this guy SUCKS - there is not currently any other solution than to do what it is we do. I actually haven't seen the cabinets guy for a while - always wondered how he would come across the big pond to install those cabinets at my place anyways. :) Bob Bone

Same with the email spammers. If they send out a million emails and make a few hundred dollars out of it, it's worth their while. But anyway, I maintain that Cakewalk could go a long way towards preventing this by maintaining a ban list of proxies like the Tor nodes. Spammers post from proxies - they're certainly not using their home IP's.

Just zapped the song Forum. I always look at the Home page and see if they are spamming the sub forums too. I mentioned this on the 8.5 forum, I think a possible solution is to use the same filter that keeps new members from posting links or pictures from starting more than one thread a day. If this is possible. It is just way to easy to create a new account here and start a thread. Some forums won't let your first thread through until a moderator looks at it first. Some forums won't let you post until you have replied to a certain number of threads. Stienberg only allows registered members on it's main forum. Example, I can post on the LE forum and Wave Lab, but not on Cubase main forum. That said, it's a dull forum with slow answers. But here we could have unregistered people using the "getting started" forum

I check the home page often (which is why I create a new topic or bump one to replace the spammer title showing there). Since Friday, I've flagged over 200 posts (in several different forums) which basically killed almost an hour of my weekend... I PM'd Ryan with a suggestion since these guys have really ramped up their uselessness this week. We'll see if anything can be done.

That's what I mean man, flagging these scumbags is a pain in the ass. I flagged maybe 10 of them earlier, and it's still a couple of minutes work. You have to click on the post, scroll down, click the flag, wait for it to confirm (which often takes a few seconds at this time of the night because CW's server still seems to go on the wonk on a regular basis). It's not the best solution.

Just given yet another spam it's third flag of death.
If our usual spammer is posting via a botnet of trojan-infected PCs whose owners have no idea what their computer is up to then blocking IP addresses is unlikely to hinder the spammer in the slightest. They'll simply switch to a PC with a different address.

I have never in my years here rarely seen a newbie start more than one thread--ever. Sure a minor inconvenience, but they could just keep asking questions in the first thread right? I'm just tossing some ideas out there as to me there must be a better way than this one which relies on our willingness to spend time zapping spam. I'm still waiting for my T shirt!

I can not believe they pay $400 per year for this blog/forum software (list price) and it has no option for better capture and flexible user limitation (other than not allow to sent PM before X posts, which I personally find ridiculous for users registered for more than a year ago). Every free software has it. Taking into account very strange e-shop failures, they just do not want to spend money/time for normal support. In hope the community and several "watchers" is sufficient. But the official "spam" with "you are qualified to spend one half from what you have paid" for X3 upgrade disturb me more than usual spamers

There are more advanced restrictions, and as I've suggested previously they're a MAJOR inconvenience for the average user and newcomer. We're actually in the process of researching the forum devs 5.1 update with Akismet integration, but are running into some road blocks. Aside from the massive amount of time I've spent on the clock researching options, I've also spent quite a lot of personal time dealing with spam. I'm not the only one. You can trivialize it all you want, but you're pretty off the mark with how we feel about improving our services. BTW, if you don't like the newsletters you can unsubscribe.

As I said I haven't seen any functionality in ASP Playground that would help you, and you could filter this out via IIS ISAPI filter. How hard it would be or whether it should be done within the resources you have available (or maybe you need to wait for a later version of forums software) was outside the scope of my comment. I don't see anything extreme about my comment.

I know Ryan said before the restrictions are a major inconvenience for new user, but on pianoworld forum I had restrictions for first dozen posts and also I had to wait 48 hours to be approved for an account. Maybe make it harder to join the forum will slow the spammers down and move on to an easier target.

http://www.aspplayground.net/community/What-features-do-you-have-to-fight-Abuse-Spam-m407793.aspx?high=SpamI agree, not really fascinating list for payed software... But the fact I get that I am "qualified" while I already have it means there was no any real "qualification". That is the only thing which disturb me, not the fact there is new sale, which is perfectly ok. I understand you are working hard and I appreciate it. But fighting particular not robot spamer is relatively easy task (track ip, track proxy, etc... such people are not really fast) as well as adding anti bot features to the forum (registration with custom fields validation, content spam check, akismet is there) PS. Thanks for the demo link, so normal anti spam is available in this software

Demo here: http://www.aspplayground.net/demo/m/home.aspxThe ideal would be they allow for posts to be filtered by regex expression, I don't see that so the only way right now would be for it to happen via IIS ISAPI unless a pattern of IP Addresses could be detected (which seems unlikely). Again not commenting on what should be done, just what I can see, I'm sure Cake is doing the best they can here within the limitations imposed upon them. This sort of thing can be quite tricky.

azslow3 http://www.aspplayground.net/community/What-features-do-you-have-to-fight-Abuse-Spam-m407793.aspx?high=Spam I agree, not really fascinating list for payed software... There is no demo version so what is really there is hard to say.
BTW, if you don't like the newsletters you can unsubscribe. The lower part of the newsletters is interesting for me.
IP's were blocked plenty of times. Our spam is definitely a combination of real people and bots. The majority of the spam is clearly bots considering they can get around the link restrictions. Try to understand that this software is compiled. We don't have the source code. Overriding its behavior would require a lot of work and would be unpredictable. We are a small company and have chosen to pool our resources into other areas. Combating spam isn't as simple as flipping a switch. Were that the case you wouldn't see it anywhere. ISAPI filters and URL Rewriters can cause you to chase your tail just like anything else. I understand that there are a lot of smart people making suggestions, but if you think we've been idle about solutions you haven't been carrying the weight we have. The Akismet integration with ASP Playground has only been available for about a week. I've been thinking about it nonstop. Nevertheless, there is still an option here for all community members to flag posts as spam should automated systems not do the trick. Hopefully this helps. Re the Newsletter... There is logic built into who receives certain upgrades. Like anything, it is possible that in your case a mistake was made. It seems weird to compare it to spam versus considering there might have been a mistake.
