I don't think you Brits have anything to worry about. Until you find yourself going to the local fish shoppe, and ordering like this.

"Cun I git some of that thar haddock and taters!"

Until then, try and relax.

What's wrong with either?
I hear a lot of Americans say (check out any of the gearwire yuotube videos) these 2:

"...you know what..."
"...I'm gonna go ahead and..."

I never heard "Bob's your/yer Uncle" until several years ago, and now it seems perfectly normal to both say and hear it over here. I think that's kinda cool (if that's not too "American" of me)!

(hopefully Bristol Jonesy don't see this..hehe)

space, the film "24 hour party people" might be worth a watch for you if you liked the whole "madchester" thing.. has a lot of the people on factory records featured , Joy Division / New Order etc.. and of course the Mondays .. I used to stay near the hacienda (a famous club there) when I was dating someone from Manchester.. hhmm 8 years ago, but It'd closed a fair few years before.

cryo.. it only skimmed the surface of the whole thing... It's like someone wrote an auto biography that featured a few friends know... lets just say some of it was fictional.. and truth and things they forgot to say.. well was far different.

the many character Anthony "Tony" Wilson that it was based on died a while ago, not sure if you knew.. but they very bad with money.. the prime example was new order... they released blue monday picture disk.. 12" EP... It happened to be the biggest selling EP of all time, but the catch was they were loosing 10p ..errm 20 cent on every copy they sold.. and it cost them a fortune..

custom made for you specifically, thats all

as apposed to say if you buy a suit to wear.. it can be "off the peg" .. generic fitting.. instead of savle row in London where they hand make the suit for the specific person.

Maybe the crucial test is:
Would you drive your car a block to the store or walk over there to grab a six pack of beer?

Answer drive your car and you are in serious trouble buddyroe!

Go ahead and...

Boy, that one drives me NUTS. I live in Columbus, Ohio (formerly from New York - came here at age 24) - and I could not BELIEVE how much people threw that useless phrase in to their speech out here. I ignore it now, but it's still insane.

As in this exchange (computer advice, overheard):

go ahead'n start windows, then go ahead'n start program X, then go ahead'n open file Y, then go ahead'n

(meanwhile I am stabbing my eyeballs out...)

The only reason I don't take the car is because I live on top of the store...I mean above the shop...and I've only got to take the elevator....I mean walk down the steps...to pick up my groceries....I mean collect my shopping.

24 hour party people.

they're showing it on IFC (independent film channel) over here. Tivoed (is that the right spelling?) it so I can watch it again w/ the missus.

reminds me of nyc around the same time frame, tho the local music wasn't as good (some, but not NO, JD etc.). Mainly the after hours time keeping and drugs. I'm sure I had a lot of fun, but can't remember much of it.

tarsier , sometimes it's used a lot where the word "custom" "exclusive" should be used..

e..g. featuring bespoke synth patches made by Jon...

YEP they are bespoke to the synth, but not to the end user as 1000's of people will have them.. so the context something it's used in is funny.

the recent one that got me was "opines" as in to have an opinion off... I thought it was something to do with air freshners...hehe

www.dictionary.com is good , I use that the odd time for words.. and there is a thesaurus in there as well which comes in handy.

That is now on my to do list. Sounds great. Joy division was so emotionally uplifting. And I loved the Happy Mondays. I still listen to Pills Thrills and Bellyaches a couple times a year. Kinky Afro and God's Cop are great songs, though Bob's yer Uncle is a close 3rd.

After associating with Brits for the last 35 years, I find myself using Brit flavored phrases all the time, which blended with my southern American accent and dialect can be quite funny sounding.

I ask the lovely Mrs. Mod Bod if she's seen my "proper" trousers.

That's not very American, is it? See. There I go again. It's maddening, it is.

LOL, Yeah, that's the very issue, it sounds kinda dumb...er I mean a bit silly...with my local yokel southern english accent... Maybe it would be OK if I was picking up a good accent at the same time. That would be real swell...
