After associating with Brits for the last 35 years, I find myself using Brit flavored phrases all the time, which blended with my southern American accent and dialect can be quite funny sounding.

I ask the lovely Mrs. Mod Bod if she's seen my "proper" trousers.

That's not very American, is it? See. There I go again. It's maddening, it is.

I'm all for the use of word 'trouser' Dave. good on yer! 'Pants' is just, well..'pants' really.

The lovely Mrs. Mod Bod and I still have a laugh about the time that we were getting dressed to go to church at First Baptist Church in Weymouth. She asked Clive and his wife (who are now dear friends of ours of over 15 years),

"Do the ladies wear pants to your church services?"

He replied, "Well, I should hope so."

I remember when we were doing the tourist thing at Buckingham Palace waiting for the changing of the guard. My daughter wanted a better view so she climbed up on something to see. I told her firmly to get down before she falls and busts her fanny.

Well, this little English lady almost snapped her neck as she spun around and glared at me. Ooops, I forgot.

And then there was the time (in Weymouth) just before we retired for the evening, Clive asked TLMM if she would like him to knock us up in the morning.

Lady walks into a pub and orders a double entendre.

The barman replies "Won't be a moment miss, then I'll come over and give you one"

Well, you know you are in trouble when you say " I'm going to warsh my car". That's how I sounded in Chicago. After 34 years in Arizona I now say "I'm going to warsh my caro." You just can't win!

Yall should try living in Dixie for a few years. It's the only place in the world where English speakers had the good sense to create a pronoun for 2nd person plural ("yall").

Although I hear "youse" is going strong in parts of Jersey

I hear a lot of Americans say (check out any of the gearwire yuotube videos) these 2:

"...you know what..."
"...I'm gonna go ahead and..."

They seem to be pretty common

You could be in the Upper Midwest (USA), where we regularly end sentences with prepositions and other grammatical mis-steps: "Are you going to stay home this afternoon, then?"

I'm an Aussie, several years ago for breakfast it would be a cuppa tea and either raisin toast or Vegemite on toast or porridge!! Nowadays after living in the USA it's coffee (usually Flogers) and a donut. Simple! But effective, although the caffeine and sugary donut tends to get me talking a million mph and feeling jittery it's a wonder anyone can understand a word I'm saying it's like hello, y'know, y'all are moving way too slow, come on now get with the freaking program!!! Hop 2, hop 2, we ain't got all freaking day!!!

You hear that a lot in the UK The Bristol area is a goldmine of oddities, not only do they add an 'l' to the end of words 'areal', Marinal' etc, but you'll hear 'where's it to?' (where is it?) and 'woss on then?' (what's happening?)

And for some real confusion from Yorkshire:

Q "Where's our kid then?"

A "He's gone out, he'll be back while teatime"

Translated it means he will NOT be back UNTIL teatime. That one still makes my head hurt.

Jon along them lines.. a friend used to ring up my parental home years ago...

he'd start the call with the line "Hello... good night"

my mum wound him up about it...

over in Jamaica it's a standard thing much as someone would ring you up and ask about drainage in the lower field *runs away very fast* .. or me about pie & mash shops..

Yep - I can confirm that the Bristol accent is probably one of the harshest regional accents in the UK - it's even worse han Welsh!

If any one has seen Little Britain, the character Vicky Pollard, played superbly by Matt Lucas, then go into any pub in Bristol, preferably one frequented by teenage girls (not that I EVER do this of course)grab a beer and just listen to the accents - it's pure, unadulterated Vicky P.

"Yeah but, no but, our ma said I 'ad to go into town and pick up some turnips for our dad's brekkie, but they didn't have none, gurt wazzocks the lot of 'em"

Or... pick up a copy of the book "Krek waiter speak Brizzle"

Colin.. that was based on errmm Norfolk / Linconshire / north hampton? etc. (I forgot where exactly). when you saw them on tv around the real town ya just thought.. that's the real life vicky..lol

I don't even think it's the accent.. it's how broad it is. some people will have a slight hint of it.

but the vicky P one is just generic the whole country over, or more the attitude.. esp in certain area's.. e.g. croydon , chatham etc.

Paul, you might be right about what Lucas based it on, but having lived in Bristol for far too long now (approaching 40 years) I have to say the accent has to be the broadest of the broad, but harsh at the same time. To my ears, people from Devon & Cornwall have a much softer lilt to their voices, almost like a sing-song effect.

But Bristol!!!!! - It's probably the cider.

When I've been to Wales, I never thought that the accent was that hard to understand. Of course I was in southern Wales - Risca and the folks might have had mercy on me by watering down the accent. I do the same when I'm over there. I speak fluent "good 'old boy" southern American dialect when I'm talking to the locals here but I clean up quite nicely when speaking to proper Brits.

One show I'm glad didn't get watered down when it came to the US (as far as I know) is "Spooks," marketed over here as "MI-5." We get each season about a year after it's out from Netflix, and my wife and I are completely hooked.

When "The Office" came to American television... ugh. Totally lost the charm of the original.

Russell , spooks is good.. I mean they finished with the new series here and no I won't give away the plot.. but it's one that couldn't be remade.

maybe they had or will remake "life on mars" for the US.. but I like the UK version and they could have got another series out of it

my friend in germany is mad about trailerpark boys? never seen it though.
I do like, my name is Earl though

I just watched a show earlier "shameless" I'd be curious if it ever made it there and if people actually thought that was how the UK all was..hehe

Steve, for years my epitaph was going to be "Just popped in for a quckie" as I was notorious for just nipping into the pub for a quick beer - and staying all day/night.

These days I only drink at most once, twice a week, and simply don't have the capacity for it any more.

And suffering from hypertension and late-onset diabetes isn't exactly conducive for drinking the copious amounts of alcohlo I used to consume on a regular basis.

But it's got it's plus points! I sleep better, weigh less, but sadly no richer - this 'hobby' of ours could keep anyone poor.

+1

For Shameless, brilliant writing, brilliant acting, tragically comic. I particularly like the 'Debbie' character, a completely co-dependant, over responsible teenager who has taken control over the emotional mayhem generated by the chaotic adults around her and has become the seeming 'Matriarch' of the family at the ripe old age of 15.

Superb characterizations and probably a more accurate reflection of certain slices of society than any of the bona-fide soaps.

A 'must watch' in my book even if it borders on the uncomfortable sometimes it is completely hilarious too.

A classic.
