Is this forum is turning me American?
Blimey! It's just been brought to my attention that in my everyday conversation now I'm starting to say things like: Hey, it's not gonna happen anytime soon... I've gotten to the point where I need a reality check... Yeah, somewhere in that ball park...(we have football pitches and recreation grounds, not ball parks... ) Those are just a few examples. The locals are starting to think I'm some kinda hybrid trans-atlantic tourist thing just now and it's starting to get a little old... Is this a good thing or not? Do I need to take some kinda corrective action or is it O.K.? Only I don't got a therapist just now.

Jon the only saying I really dislike..... "good job"... I don't think it's even the words more the infliction of how it's said.. I think it's party the surrounds your in.. they do impact on what you say subconsciously as I found out from when I can came back from Canada after a brief stay. Although it someone is a bit distant they notice it more. I can't see Reece (Beagle) saying "alright bruv... you got that sound card sorted yet or is it still all pete tong?" anytime soon hehe the one that I was picked on recently was using "brought" instead of "bought".. so yep I guess it does have an impact...

The real funny thing is is that I'm coming out with all these phrases that I pick up here but all with my local accent...I think that's what is throwing everyone... Just as well there isn't audio on the forum otherwise folk would be guiding me to all the local sights and attractions and asking what hotel I'm staying at...lol

Wait just a minute! It's bad enough that we're responsible for the dumbing down of America. So now we're responsible for the dumbing down of Britain too? Wotta revoltin' development!

Mark , yep YOU personally I think the biggest influence is the music / tv thats piped around the globe to be honest. A lot of kids here seem to think this is the states.. It's pretty sad that in itself.. like they don't have their own identity. the classic one being.. UK muso's.. have to go to the states.. get a record deal.. then re-import it back here for certain types of music.

I thought that "I reckon" was probably more indigenous to Texas and "I figger" is more of a Tennessee or GAW-GA (Georgia) saying?

Beagle , I blame the import of Dallas (the tv show in the early 80's) *walks off doing scary JR laugh* oh and the dukes of hazzard / mac gyver / a team / magnum etc although I will say the columbo's from the 70's are worth a watch.. but the later ones just aren't as good.

ORIGINAL: Beagle I thought that "I reckon" was probably more indigenous to Texas and "I figger" is more of a Tennessee or GAW-GA (Georgia) saying? I associate "reckon" with south of the Mason-Dixon line, and "figger" to be north of it. More or less.

ORIGINAL: cryophonik ORIGINAL: Jonbouy Did I just say 'I guess'...?.. The proper American phrase would be "I reckon..." or "I figger..." Cryo You clearly do not know jack all about true English. Consider this classic line: and IN this ever changing world IN which we live IN as sung by Sir Paul in his hit song "Live and Let Die". You need to drop extra two letter words into sentences. No matter how hard you (or I ) try, we are to never to going to get to their language. At least I gave it the old college try. Bob's yer uncle.

Hey I'm all for it! Any universal soup of a language that everyone can misunderstand on equal terms has got potential in my book. I mean we have 'Dustbins' what is with that? There's sure more than dust that goes in it, in fact there's a whole bunch of trash goes in there daily!
