Issues with Quad-Capture/Looking for a new interface
Hey everyone, I am having some serious issues with using the Quad-Capture. I've tried what seems like everything. I run SONAR in as Administrator, I make sure Windows is not using the interface while running SONAR (that seemed to give it more stability). No matter what, the Quad-Capture seems to crash my PC, blue screen and all. Sometimes it will crash when I am just using the interface for iTunes or Youtube (but not running SONAR at the same time). I've tried both WDM and ASIO, WDM seems to be more stable but I still have crashes. Can someone please let me know what might be the problem? I am thinking of purchasing a new interface in the hopes of cutting my losses. Can anyone suggest an interface they feel is rock solid while running SONAR? Something that's no more than $500, thanks in advance.

I have the latest drivers and system update. I've tried re-installing the drivers as well as SONAR, but the issue remains. I am using X3e. I have Platinum but haven't started using it yet since I have some projects that I want to finish in X3e.

Do you have problems if you stay off the internet and only run your computer as a DAW? Sometimes it's a bad idea to make a DAW multi task. Your asking for trouble when you use a pro audio system to play U tubes. Uncheck share drivers with other programs And use your on board audio for that stuff. Or like me, I disable all other audio drivers and don't go on the net unless I'm updating DAW related apps.

I am wondering if it is because you appear to have your audio interface shared between Windows and Sonar, that your troubles are occurring. If you have not tried this - please try changing the Windows Default Audio Device to something other than your audio interface (I use my on-board sound). Sometimes Sonar and Windows can fight over access to the drivers for the audio interface, if they are both set to point to them. I can only recall this occurring for the ASIO driver mode, but others might know one way or the other if it could also occur for WDM. All I know is that I always keep them separate, with Sonar and other music apps that would run only by themselves using the audio interface, and Windows using my on-board sound (or more likely pointing to the HDMI of either of my HDTV monitors). So, please test out pointing Windows to use on-board sound or perhaps HDMI of a monitor, and have only Sonar pointing to the audio interface, and see if that helps things out. Bob Bone

Your issue may or may not go away with a new interface. Blue screens are more related to your computer system and not normally a thing an audio driver would be involved with. Quad Captures , unless defective which is possible, are given a high rating from happy owners. I just read a thread on GearSlutz where someone said they had owned a U22 a Scarlett 2i4 and now a Quad Capture and said it was the best of the bunch for them. You don't give us your system specs so please post that as well. Download and run Latency Mon as well when trouble shooting it's good to know what running. http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

I use the Quad Capture without any problems. I have it as my only audio device and make sure that all other drivers are disconnected, including the audio drivers from my video card. All apps use this device and I use the machine for everything. In Sonar preferences I make sure that the option to share the audio driver is not checked.

Same as me. Quad capture as on only device on my PC, any other audio drivers disabled. I use ASIO drivers. Never had any issues.

You can read blue screen crashes and it will tell you exactly what is causing it. I bet every crash is for the same thing.

Please do provide some info from the blue screen data, as that might help us find the right solution for you. It certainly seems like a system-specific issue, as others have certainly not been reporting blue screen crashes for quite a while. Recalling past blue-screen crashes, could you possibly have a sample rate mismatch between Sonar and the settings on the audio interface? That used to cause wacky things to happen for folks. Also, could you possibly be using a USB 3 port to plug the interface into? Many, if not most, audio interface that use USB connectivity seem to want to be plugged into a USB 2 port, and some interfaces have all kinds of stability issues if plugged into a USB 3 port. Without some additional information, I don't know what else to offer.... Bob Bone

Quad Capture here, rock solid. I have the other sound disabled except the Quad, running ASIO. Not running the latest driver, mine is 1.5.0, latest is 1.5.2. No issue, so I'm not upgrading the driver.

Hey everyone, Wow thanks for all of the answers, so helpful. I don't know where to start. I have the latest drivers for the Quad-Capture. I have SONAR X1, X2, X3 and Platinum. I bought the Quad-Capture after I got X2 and I had some issues starting then. I've have taken a number of steps to try to remedy this situation. I don't have 'Share Drivers with Other Programs' checked. Also, my system uses the on-board soundcard when SONAR is running, and that has also helped tremendously, far less crashes when I figured that out. When I run SONAR, I don't run anything else, no internet browsing, not anything. The sample rate of SONAR also matches the sample rate used by the Quad-Capture, so I don't think that's the issue. I also used WDM/KS and that seems to be more stable than ASIO, I am not sure why. I do think robert_e_bone is right. I might be plugging it into a USB 3.0 slot. That's not something I've considered as an issue up until you brought it up, so I will definitely try that as well. Also, I am not familiar with how to disable other audio drivers. What does that entail? Typically, I plug in the Quad-Capture USB into one of the slots. I use WDM/KS within SONAR and I only check the Quad-Capture inputs and outputs in Preferences>Devices. I think what I will do for now is try a USB 2.0 slot and see if that helps. Anyone know how to distinguish between a USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port? I hope that is the issue. If it happens again, I'll read the details of the crash. But I am curious as what ampfixer means by disconnecting all other drivers. Please let me know. Thanks to everyone for their input!

If the motherboard has build in sound, you can disable it in the bios setup. Or you can start Control Panel, search for sound (Change sound card settings or similar) where you see a list of device for playback and recording. In my system, the Quad Capture shows up as the default device for both playback and recording. > Anyone know how to distinguish between a USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port? I'm not sure if this is a standard color, my USB 3.0 board port is blue. Do check your board manual.

I just checked my manual. I have an Alienware laptop, M18x. It doesn't look like it has a USB 2.0 port, only 3.0. I searched for USB 3.0 audio interfaces and the only one I found was around $2500, crazy. If anyone finds one for cheaper, please let me know. In my system, I have found that selecting the laptop speakers as my system sound and the Quad-Capture for SONAR's use definitely makes for a more stable environment.

I have 2.0 and 3.0 available. In theory, 3.0 is supposed to be backward compatible, but I had trouble with a couple of different 2.0 devices plugged into a 3.0 spot. I'm sure some implementations are better than others, but mine is not so good in this regard.

Some USB 3 ports are backward compatible, and some are not. I looked at the specs for the computer and it looks like it has 2 super speed USB 3 ports and another USB 3 port, with apparently one set or the other seeming to be backward compatible. Please note that backward compatible may be a sliding scale, from manufacturer to manufacturer, and while it might work for you, it also might not. Certainly trying the other USB ports is worth a shot. You may need to install the drivers for the interface again when you shift to a different port - I would actually recommend you first remove the audio interface drivers, then go through installation using one of the other ports. if successful, you are done, and if not, then again remove the drivers and install them yet again for the 3rd port. This approach should provide maximum potential for success. I am also wondering if you can try one additional thing, if you haven't already - and I think this should be tried prior to doing audio interface driver removal/installation as explained above. So - what I am asking you to try is to either turn off the laptop's Wi-Fi (there might be a physical little switch on the chassis somewhere, or perhaps a function key for it), or if not finding either a switch or function key, go into Windows Device Manager just prior to launching a Sonar session, then find and expand the Wi-Fi drivers and disable them. (note that is disable, NOT uninstall or remove). THEN, launch Sonar and see if you get a more stable system, as well as better audio streaming performance in Sonar. After completing your Sonar session and closing Sonar, you can then turn on or enable the Wi-Fi again and you should get instant access to the web again. The reason I mention messing with the Wi-Fi is that for MANY MANY folks, they have all kinds of sound and stability issues when running Sonar on a laptop that has Wi-Fi (which they all do). Turning Wi-Fi off or disabling it, then running Sonar, then turning on/enabling after finishing the Sonar session seems to fix all of those issues for lots and lots of folks. I look forward to you testing out that which I have put forth here, and thank you for trying the other things folks had suggested. The Wi-Fi testing should be pretty quick, and may hopefully fix things up for you, or at the very least should give you better audio streaming stability. Bob Bone

I would stick with the Quad and try to find the problem, as said before, if it's not the problem you'll have wasted money on another sound card. Yesterday the audio from the bass cut out, I could see it was still receiving a signal from the guitar, but the sound stopped. I feared the worse, but turned out that the internet went down and the demo version of Mark Studio had changed to a 10 min trial, instead of a 15 day trial. Last night I was watching a Youtube documentary of the funk brothers, and I feared the worse. After re-starting the browser it happened again and turned out it was a fault with the uploaded youtube video. After years of problems with my M-Audio FW1814 on firewire and and a Texas chip, I gave up on it and went USB. But it becomes ingrained to doubt the soundcard. I still don''t know if it was the FW1814 at fault or if it was a red herring for something else. The quad for info has worked well for me, on 2 different laptops and 3 versions of Sonar.

I agree with the others that think you should stick with the interface:
I was having the same problem with crashes 2-3 years ago with my Octa-Capture, and it was a real pain figuring out what the issue was; It eventually solved itself after installing the latest drivers for everything on my System, updating the firmware for the interface, and updating the interface driver as well.
In my experience, Sonar and the interface behave way more using WDM/KS (the lower latency is really nice too,) if you make a new .AUD and have it set up with it from the start.
I was having a pretty awful time after experimenting with the different driver modes to see which was the most stable, and had the lowest achievable latency; WDM/KS was what worked best for me, but it'd start acting up and setting off the wave profiler if I changed buffers or started a new project.
The thing works great now and I haven't had any issues from it since Roland released the updated drivers, so hopefully your problem gets resolved.

Well I tried running SONAR the past couple of days using the same USB port and with my Wifi disabled, and even though the session ran smoother than before, I still had a crash. So I decided to re-install the Quad-Capture driver using another USB port. The weirdest thing was that the new USB port I was using could only run SONAR in MME (it had some serious issues using the other drivers, crashing SONAR but not the computer), whereas the previously use USB port could run in ASIO and WDM/KS. Anyway, the computer still crashed a couple of times but I extracted the files Windows said contained information about the crash. I am not sure what to do with these but I have them on the desktop just in case. I am going to try another USB port tomorrow but honestly, it doesn't look good. I want to stick with this audio interface but it's giving me hell. Part of me wonders whether a firewire interface would give me these sorts of issues.

Makes you realise how much we have to get involved with our machines to get and keep them working right. And this has nothing to do with power. I really great system can be rendered useless by a lowly usb port.

I am always relieved when it turns out that someone using the same Soundcard as me and is having problems finds that its not actually the our soundcard that at issue (even when mine is functioning well for me). Also good that this forum has helped another user and just saved them from selling a piece of working gear at the expense of buying another, to have found that wasn't the issue. In general I think it helps to think aloud here, before you take any big steps.

Kamikaze, I agree. I really appreciate everyone's help. I had contacted Roland so many times only to get some pretty useless answers. I contacted Cakewalk as well and they were considerable more helpful. Finally I turned to the forum and something worked out. So again, I appreciate everyone's help and input. I am also posting also to give the thread an update about the situation. I wanted to let everyone know that I have been using the Quad-Capture in a variety of situations that I know would have crashed my computer before, and I have not experienced one single crash. So yes, the solution has worked. Thanks everyone!
