Issues with interpolate feature for velocity
I'm trying to use the interpolate feature to try to tame my piano notes. I can choose Event Filter - Search, but when I hit OK and it goes to Event Filter - Replace, everything is grayed out and I can't choose minimum and maximum velocity (or anything else, for that matter.) Any ideas?

Not sure Janet. Have you tried the dedicated Midi Velocity Tool? Select all your notes, then, in Track View, Right Click the area highlighted, then choose (this is from memory) Process Effect > Cakewalk Fx > Midi Fx > Velocity. This will open up the tool's GUI where you can do all sorts of weird & wonderful things with velocities.

Wow that's exactly what I was just looking for, timely question Janet. I just got a set of digital drums and the velocities are all over the map, Been looking for a way to put a upper and lower limit on them. If it was my Atari and KCS I'd be smoking. Sonar's MIDI editing is elusive to me. After 4 years I'm still only at the 20% mark.

The velocity tool can do this I think Johnny - open it up & hit F1, I can't recall all of the options from memory. I sometimes forget who I am........

OK, I finally got a chance to try that, Colin. Thank you. I'm afraid I don't know how it works though, and I'm not sure if it's the same as the interpolate tool. It seems like it would change all the notes to the same velocity, which is definitely not what I want to do for a piano solo. :) Cactus, it SHOULD be under process - interpolate, then check Note (uncheck the other things below) and velocity over to the right of Note. Make sure the min & max are 0 & 127 (should be the default) Click OK. Then I swear it used to work that then you could check Note again (or it was checked), then in Velocity I would put something like min: 50 and Max: 85 or whatever. Unfortunately, now they're all grayed out when it goes to the second area: Event Filter: Replace. Not sure why it's happening. It used to work like a charm. I'm using Studio 8.5, btw. I should check to see what X1 will do...if I can find anything there. :) Thanks again!

OK, just tried it with X1. (Can't right click to see the velocities...where did that go??....sorry, very impatient with this new-fangled thing). Anyway, now it's called Find/change under Process and even though it seems as if it's still grayed out on the second window, it actually works. :)

I think it's supposed to hurt till you can't take it anymore. Once that happens, then you'll know (a little bit).

I'm away from home for 2 weeks so cannot try it out but thanks, There's GOTTA be a way. As I said in KCS you highlighted the selection and there was an upper / lower velocity option. For the drums any s shots over 118 come through nasty sounding. Seems within 90-116 would give a more even tone and still a little bit of dynamics, I think this is what your trying to do too! I do not want them all the same,, completely defeats the reason for playing the instrument... might as well program the notes... or use a nasty drum machine...

I guess I'm still old school and use cals. There's a couple of them for compressing / limiting midi floating around the net. Does X1 and whatever's current use cals anymore? I get a lot of use out of the random time Cals for un-quantizing the occasional midi file off the net.

Yes, you can still use cal scripts inside X1/X2
