It Was Only Yesterday (Larry Carlton Cover-Final Mix)

Another cover, this is a Larry Carlton song I have always liked and decided to do my own arrangement of it.  The backing track is a little different than the original, hope any Carlton fans aren't offended;)

This is the updated link:
http://www.soundclick.com...&q=hi&newref=1

One of these days will post some originals but for the time being it is easier for me to learn mixing and recording techniques by doing these covers and getting feedback from all the great members of this forum.    Hope it is enjoyed.

Regards

Enjoyed it very much. I did think the guitar on the intro was a tiny bit something...there was a harshness I noticed but that went away when the main section started up. BTW: really enjoyed the improvisation lines... I'm an LC fan and I wasn't bothered at all.

    Mike,

Thanks for the comment.   I just tried the Tube Leveler for the first time on this recording to give the guitar a little more substance.  It could be adding distortion, I haven't really messed with the Tube Leveler too much so that could be it.   Just used the pre-set setting called Subtle Warm Dirt, or something to that effect.

My new pre-amp just came today so will start using that for future recordings, or maybe to fix this one.  Got the GAP PRE73.  Looking forward to playing around with it when I get home.

The chord at around 0.11 sounded like a clam to me (the bass note specifically).  I would also like to hear more of the bottom end on the rhodes, strings, drums, and bass.  I think that you're trying to avoid "mud" by cutting out the bottom, which is generally a good thing, but that can be taken too far.  \

It also sounds like the release time on the compression is too slow, though that might just be the attack of the string pad playing a trick on my ears.

    Very nice playing.

    Jonas,

Thanks for the listen and the comments.   The chord at .11 may be the result of the held sustain pedal, or it may be a glitch from the SoundClick encoding, I don't hear it on the original.

On the bottom end, you are correct, the Rhodes and Strings are  Hi-Passed starting at between 150-200Hz.  I think the Rhodes is set to HP @ 200Hz with a Q of 7.  The higher Strings track is around the same setting as the Rhodes and the lower strings track starting HP at around 150Hz.   What would you suggest on the Rhodes, to have the intro fuller and then Hi-Pass EQ when the bass and drums comes in or scale back on the HP EQ and let more of it come through?

On the bass (Trillian), I have a double track,  one compressed, one not, a slight bump at 100Hz, then scooped out between 255-1k (-12db) and a slight bump of +4db at 4k.

Drums are Superior Drummer, parallel compression using the VC-64 Vintage Channel DrumBus Compression setting on the more heavily compressed bus, just some light Sonitus on the lightly compressed bus, very light.

I will have to check the string compression settings.  I have a string buss that I sent the two string parts to that have the T-Racks Vintage Tube Compressor on the Warm 570 (Fairchild) preset.

I also did some tests with my new Pre-Amp tonight.  The guitar was very muddy and thin on this recording (straight from my TC G-System) to RME FF800.  So I ended up using the TL-64 Tube Leveler and EQ'ing the other tracks to help it come through.  If I re-record with the Pre-amp I think that may cure part of the problem.

I appreciate your comments, my room is driving me crazy and I am considering getting that ARC thing being discussed over on the Techniques forum to correct the problems.  Would appreciate your thoughts on the above settings.

    Regards

I'm pretty familiar with this tune as I used to play it myself a long time back and to me you've done an excellent job.  Only slight thing for me is I would have probably gone for a slightly bigger 'room size' for the guitar sound and/or maybe more sustain for the section from 1:20 but it doesn't really detract here, just a personal thing.

The idea of automating the EQ on the Rhodes is a good one.

The T-Racks Fairchild comp (as well as the UAD Fairchild) generally sounds best when the GR needle is barely moving.  I use it more for color than for gain reduction.

As far as using High-Pass EQ, you have to try to find the the balance between "warm chocolate" and "mud".  Based on your musical arrangement, I think that you could dispense with the Hi-Pass EQ altogether on the strings and Rhodes and it would sound really nice.

    Combo,

Thanks for the listen and comments.  I have a different guitar sound in  mind for re-recording the parts, I agree with your comment about the room size.   Guitar needs a little more hair on it as well.

    Jonas,
I will try try your suggestions when I return from vacation.   Will probably re-record the guitar part as well using my new pre-amp and a little bigger guitar sound.    I hear what you are saying the Hi-Pass settings.

Sweet very pretty.  The guitar sounded great but a little thin.  What was the guitar and setup?

Excellent playing.  Enjoyed it.  Would love to hear a little thicker guitar, but otherwise... Boffo!

Daryl-Thanks for the comment.  I am currently on my way back home from vacation (stuck in the airport) and planned to re-record the guitar part sometime this week with my new pre-amp.   Will re-post it with the update.   It is currently just Guitar Rig 4 with my guitar plugged directly into my RMEFF800.   I just picked up a GAP PRE73 so hopefully that will give it a little more body when re-recording..

Robby-Thx for the listen.   The Rhodes sound is from my Yamaha Motif Rack using the preset Stage 73 which came with a Motif add-on package of Vintage Synths and keyboards. The Stage 73 has a nice panning effect.   Still pretty happy with the Motif sounds though it is now about 7 years old.

Sounds like Larry to me for sure. Nice Playing - smooth. The tonality is fine, but I'd like to hear it blend into the mix a little better. It's a tad out front for a smooth Jazz tune. Really great stuff, though sounds really good to me!

Very soothing sound.  Guitar playing is very expressive.
Mix sounds  good to me except that the bass is not there (on these small speakers).

    I really enjoyed this.

Back in the day, Carlton was often referred to as "Mr. 335."  I think you did a good job of capturing that feel.  Very well played.

BIABDude - Thank you.  I will be posting a new version  in the next day or so.  Hope you like the new one as well.

Janet- It is funny you say that because my mixes went from zero to 60 after I started using Jonas' mixing template.  I still have much room for improvement but the template was an excellent starting point and probably saved years of trial and error.  Glad you liked it.

Tap/James - Glad you liked it, I will be re-recording the guitar part in the next day or so and will repost.  Hopefull the pre-amp will add some more body to the sound.

No How/Rick - thanks for the comment,  I will be adding some more bottom end in my new mix.

Philz - Mr. 335 and Mr. Guitar were two of my favorite players growing up so that is a nice compliment.  Thanks for the listen.

Cool.  :)  I want to use Jonas' template, but I don't have all the plug-ins so I'm not sure it would work for me. Maybe when I grow up and get more SW.  :)

    Janet,

All the plugs in the template are native Cakewalk except the Camel Crusher, I believe, which is a freeware program.  You should give it a whirl.  The only real addition I have added is Waves SSL on the Master Bus, however, there is a SSL equivalent master bus setting with Sonitus Compressor in the template.

Sounds excellent.  Nice job on the arrangement, strings, background guitar, etc.  Nice solo too.  I'm listening on ear buds only so I can't comment on the bass frequencies, but the rest of the mix sounds well balanced.

I've listened to this a few times and really couldn't say much other than, I like the track. Very well done. The guitar playing is nice but there's something about the tone or presence that bothers me. It just doesn't seem to fit the track. It may be that it's one dimensional in that the dynamics seem to be either stagnant because of compression or by performance. Or, maybe it's just too present. I'm trying to make this sound helpful and not critisize as I do think it's mostly 'There'  Seems you got the part right but it just doesn't come across to my ears.
Is there a multiband compressor on the guitar?

This is a lot of fun to play along with. I happened to have my bass hangin' on my neck when I played this song and jumped in.

The only thing I noticed was the lead seems to stick out a tiny bit too much. Maybe bring it back and add some more reverb to it?

The TL-64 plug can be tricky until you learn how it works. I start from default and do my own settings on it. You can really add warmth without making your track too shrill.

    I liked this a lot.

    Thanks,

    Bub.

I get what Tim was saying about the bite on the guitar. But the whole affair is really just so lacking on bottom end that I am not sure. Get some low mids to warm this thing up, cuz the playing is beautiful.

I enjoyed this a lot!!! I wish there was more low end to the track and to the guitar. Guitar sounds very thin or lacking of body. The mix or separation of instruments is very nice. Big fan of Carltons!

Geno - Appreciate the comment, the arrangement took some time, although it doesn't stray too far from the original sections, tempo, etc...  there are a number of different parts in it.   I think the consensus was there wasn't enough bass so I reposted a newer version with an updated guitar part as well.  Hopefully there isn't too much bass now;)

Tim- ThX.  The tone problem is two-fold, 1) I was running directly into my soundcard so the sound was a little thin and 2) I was using Guitar Rig 4 which I have hit-and-miss luck with.    This new version is recorded going into a GAP Pre73 pre-amp and I am using two amp sims blended together, one is Guitar Rig and the other is Overloud TH2.  Not sure if I got it quite right yet but was trying to fix the tone and balance issues first.

    Jim-Thx for the comment.

Bub-Thx for the comment, I changed up the amp sims and reverb delay levels so I hope this version is better.   Hopefully I got this better balanced and rounded in the new version.  I am still listening to your 3 Amigos Song.

James- Thx for the comment.   I am having a really tough time with balances in my office where I do my mixing.  Getting very inconsistent results.  This one was a lot of fun to play, glad you liked it, not sure this new performance was as good as the first post but was mainly working out the kinks on the mix and guitar tone.  If that is up to snuff I will probably replay it for real in a final version.

    Chas-Thx for the comment.

Phil - Glad you liked it, hope there is enough low end in this new version.

Thanks everyone for listening and comments.  Changes to this version were:

    1) Took Hi-Pass off Rhodes at the intro

    2) Increased the level of Bass and added a little more compression

    3) Bumped the Kick a little

    4) re-recorded guitar part using pre-amp.   The original Guitar Rig settings are still used but I also doubled another amp sim Overloud Th2.  Guitar Rig part is primarily providing some additional ambiance.

    5) Pulled back compression on the String Bus

Hope this version is an improvement.
