It Was Twenty Years Ago Today

20 years ago on this date I retired from the military with 20 years service as Senior Master Sgt. (E-8)     20 YEARS AGO!

I Am old. I seem to like playing and recording now more than ever. Thank you Cakewalk for making this possible! The good thing about the military is it makes you incapable of manipulation or brain washing due to their intense education program! Everybody's retired from something, Greg. For BB, it's saluting. For me, it's dancing.

Dave I was in the band. A guitar player and in one of the many "rhythm sections". What's a salute? Ask Mod Bod about his military days. The USAF bandsman didn't have to have any war skill except every once in a while dealing with the Concert band people. The stories I could tell...

I grew up on military bases. We often were treated to performances by the Air Force band at my grade school. As a trumpet player, I was in awe of the first trumpet and thought that must be the coolest gig on the planet.

Well, the coolest gig in the Air Force, anyway. Compared to patrolling the flight line in subzero weather or skinning your knuckles under a truck. (Actually, my dad had the coolest job, flying airplanes. But I knew you had to go to school for that, and playing trumpet in the band seemed like a more reasonable dream.)

Once the USAF did away with the field bands in 80' things were just incredible. I went to a Command Band then to DC. Big budgets, which meant any amps, guitars etc needed I just ordered. The 80's for me couldn't have been better musically. I was fortune enough to work with some of the best musicians in the world and I swear there were times when I sat thinking to myself this is too good to be true. Somethings going to fall from the sky and hit me in the head. The glory days lasted over 10 years till the Pentagon decided the USAF was going the corporate model. That's why I got out. You can't run a band by committee. I raised quit a ruckus with the brass before I got out though. The CH would have been proud of me. At least honourable mention
