It's been a while....
.....so thought I would start a thread to see if I've forgotten how. I was reminiscing about my early years in music during the psychedelic days and recalled (and googled) an artist I'd totally forgotten about. Do any of you remember Sandy Bull? I only had his first album which was 'Fantasias'. Unfortunately, my dad came home in another drunken stupor at 2am (1970), dropped a lit cigarette at the garage entrance and burned down the garage, all my vinyl collection AND all my USMC/Vietnam artifacts.....I'm still pissed and can feel my temporal arteries inflating when I think about it! I also saw him at the 'Northern California Folk Rock Festival' in June of 1969 at the Santa Clara, Ca. Fairgrounds. Also playing was Jimi Hendrix (who had just prior got busted in Hawaii with heroin hidden in his axe) and IIRC Big Brother & Holding Company. Wish I could remember more about that concert but you know how those days were....ahem. Anyway.....hope all are doing well making music and money. Later...

OMG......I used to have that poster! You are a gem for posting this....I can't believe it. Ok...I got out of the Marine Corps on June 30, 1969 and knew that this concert was very close to my discharge. I remember the other groups better now and I was wrong about Big Brother and realize I meant Jefferson Airplane. It must have been the mescaline prescription. I'm printing this out so I can really go back in time. Thanks so much for your reply and the polite memory jog for me...ha. EDIT: Also...being a drummer at heart....I loved Lee Michaels but can't remember if Frosty played drums at that concert. I saw Lee again (with Albert King) at the Fillmore West and he had some other drummer who did not measure up to Frosty (Bartholomew Smith-Frost). Santana and Canned Heat with Fido on drums...more of my favs.

You're quite welcome. And remember, when you go back....one pill make you larger and one pill makes you small. Your pick. Good Luck.

Katie_Katie Here ya go...feel young again. Wow... Look at all those names and not a single rapper, MC or DJ... How did we get so far away from this? (*Sob!*)

Ha...funny you say that because the one the USMC gave me didn't do anything at all. Katie_Katie....you're sense of humor is in tact.

CraigB..... "How did we get so far from this".....I don't have a clue so mega'sobs' from this camp. It was quite the line-up and Fillmore West was doing similar events with all of them. I think FW is where I was Iron Butterfly (yes, I had "Heavy" and "Ina Gada Da Vida") but it's a bit foggy at this moment. Thanks for chiming in...

Ahh...Iron Butterfly. Although the 15 minutes of 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' is notable, enigmatic, and quite possibly the first crack in the door to acid and metal music, I like the flip side better. Especially 'Most Anything You Want (Girl)'. Take a blender, throw in some Doors, Mamas and Papas (sans Mama), Bach and you get 'Most Anything You Want (Girl)'.

I agree...to me....that was the inception acid/metal for lack of better contemporary pigeon hole. Both sides were good as was all of 'Heavy'....IMO. In listening to those 60's recordings there was always the raw, *sounds like a band performing* quality that went bye bye a long time ago. Hard to put in words but I miss that (analog?) quality. 'The Doors'....I never saw them in concert. 'Mama's and Papas' played a gig in Vietnam but I didn't see them. Thanks....I know I can count on you to keep my dated facts straight.

Quazelar 'The Doors'....I never saw them in concert. Saw them once about a year before the Florida incident.

Quazelar CraigB..... I think FW is where I was Iron Butterfly (yes, I had "Heavy" and "Ina Gada Da Vida") but it's a bit foggy at this moment. Hehe... Not sure if I fully get that sentence there (though under certain 60's influence it makes perfect sense!). I happen to have a fleeting connection to Iron Butterfly. The band was formed in San Diego, California (where I was born) and the keyboardist who wrote In A Gadda Da Vida was named Doug Ingle. The drummer for the very first band I was in back in the 70's was also named Doug Ingle - his son. He and I both were in the same graduating class at the same high-school. Unfortunately, I didn't know about Iron Butterfly back then and it wasn't long before Doug Jr. went to join a different band where he could play keys like his dad.

CraigB..... Ha...I now see the unintentional play on words. Yes..the 60's did those things to some of us that survived it all. That is still a cool connection you had with the Ingle clan. Thanks for that story. A safe Friday to everyone....

Mornin' bapu.... The Doors were one of my favs so don't know how I managed to miss seeing them. Hmmm...the 'Florida incident'....as in the lewd exposure during concert episode? I'm shooting from the hip on that guess. Hope all is well in So. Ca.

I'm impressed that you guys are remembering any of this at all. Some of the concerts I attended back then can only be substantiated by the souvenir ticket stubs I saved. Living in Europe in those days, I missed out on most of the west coast acts. Never saw Jefferson Airplane or The Doors. My most memorable concerts were British acts: The Nice, Moody Blues, Colosseum, ELP, Deep Purple. Although we did get the Mothers of Invention - just once, but it was the Flo & Eddie incarnation and they played "Happy Together", which was cool.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Bitflipper.... I wish I recalled more from those days....they were very busy band/music days for me. Alas, those '60's post military prescriptions left me with some neuronal gaps. After posting this I was terrified the forum would perceive it as a pre-dirt event and no one would be old enough to comment. EDIT: Read you're profile. We were playing clubs 5-6 nights a week until 'disco' reared it's head. Completely changed the club scene in a few nano-seconds. Later....

Old dirt, new dirt. Matters little. I personally believe that many musicians and/or people that have an intimate relationship with music have old souls. Meaning, they understand, discuss, and appreciate musical eras that occured long before they were born. Some can hold discussions is if they personally experienced eras gone by. Music transcends generational boundaries, and is one of the reasons I love it so.

As subjective as our tastes in music are I agree that music is a form of language that can 'transcend generational boundaries'. Even the genres I find quite unappealing....(smileycon here). A good day to all...
