While I have been learning PT for the last several months I am still no expert.  I still prefer to track and mix in X1, I also think the included plugs with X1 are better than PT, but maybe thats because I am more familiar with them.

With that said, I am kind of digging the PT routing features and options.  Another thing is clips fades.  Both PT and X1 you hover the mouse at the top corner of the clip to get the little fade icon..the difference is, when you fade in or out in PT it works as intended, it will not magically grab the fade at the end of the clip.  Although X1 is improved, it continues to do this to me and makes X fading and fading in and out painful and tedious with multiple clips.

You can argue till you're blue in the face but .5 of a star finishes the argument for me. 9 out of 10 astronomers agree. X1 also won the 'DAW most likely to come between W1 and Y1'at NAMM.

I've never really understood the 'best' DAW argument. Surely the best DAW is the one that works for the individual and their unique useage?

Mind you I've never understood lots of things, I'm a simple soul....

Well, if you were talking .5 Earth populations, that would be like a lotta people 'n stuff. So .5 is nothing to sneeze at, certainly.

I have a thread that I started last year that does some comparisons of PT10 and Sonar 5. I use both extensively and can assure you Pro Tools 10 matches Sonar 5 very well. Sonar X1, now that's a different story. For some reason I can use hyperlinks in this forum anymore - in either Firefox or IE or I'd link you to the thread. Am I the only Linkless user? -D

I think PT and Sonar were developed with different models in mind.  For me, Sonar works better because it is optimized for sequencing, arranging, and using VIs.  PT is optimized as a 'digital tape machine' to be plugged into an existing recording facility with a board, outboard gear, etc.  You can use either one for either thing, but they are conceptually different tools.

For me, Sonar is much better suited, but, duh, this is a Sonar forum.

I don't know. I just prefer X1 over PT simply because the workflow is better...for me.

I have PT MP9 that I recently purchased and I'm going through the groove 3 PT9 tutorial.  I also had a 30 day PT10 copy.  PT10 is still 32 bit, although I've been told PT11 will be 64 bit.  I haven't done enough with PT to be able to compare, but I don't think I'll ever convert or fully convert to Pro Tools.   All the people in Nashville that I deal with are using Pro Tools and the reason I got it.

MAC users were too aloof to be bothered arguing and PC users couldn't find the time to argue because they were always updating security.

Firederd, What you say makes sense.  PT popular in Nashville because Nashville is (at least at a high level) oriented towards large to medium sized facilities recording live players, which is a good model for PT.

"Best" is subjective, clearly.  105 out of 100 people agree. Oh, wait...

IMO, 8.5.3 slays PT.  It's rock solid and does everything I need.  However, X1 vs PT?  I'd take PT any day.  Sadly, after 8.5.3 is outdated, I'll move to PT.  For now, I'll keep using my 'retro' but effective DAW.

I can't wait to try out the new browser view in the coming update. And I love how much money I have left over every month, after buying Sonar and an HP PC, to buy all kinds of non Pro Tools equipment, plugins, hardware, and food. Just look how much money i save by not having to buy this (not that I wouldn't love to have it!) http://www.sweetwater.com..re/detail/System5MC-32/

Thanks for this thread. I've been using Pro Tools for a while. It's been a never ending source of frustration. The constant DAE errors. The CPU load is pathetic. I can run out of CPU power with only 24 tracks with one or two plugins on each track and two or three aux. I have yet to max out a Sonar session. I expect a little more than 24 channels out of a 4ghz quad core processor with a UAD card and a Liquid Mix attached to it. You'd think that those extra processors would take up some of the slack. Well, they do. But in Pro Tools for some reason, they add to the load. I have plenty to rant about but I'll hold my tongue....err....fingers.

Yeah, me too I think.  At the moment I have a buggy metronome in 8.5.3, but no metronome at all in the X1 trial.  It might work if I buy the full version, or it might not.

As someone said, the best DAW is the one you're most familiar with.  Absolutely.  I'm familiar with 8.5.3, and I think when all is said and done, there isn't a compelling reason to upgrade yet.  Maybe X2 will sort out track height, have VST3, better video support and give me a reason to upgrade.  As for PT9 which I also have - nah.
