It's a European Thing

The winner of the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards "Best Act Ever" was Rick Astley.

Other nominees were U2, Green Day and Britney Spears.

Britney was robbed.

Yeh, I'm a little late with this news, but I am mystified by current fashions and in particular European tastes. Even if the best studio monitors and chocolates come from there.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

twas an internet campaign, bit, not even mrs astley thinks he is the best act ever...!!! weird how most of us might have had, say, stevie wonder, the beatles, pink floyd, led zep, etc etc on there above the actual acts nominated...!

A perfect example of why I never pay attention to awards...

Hate to say it though, Rick was a good singer. And at least seems to have a sense of humour about himself.

I'm currently mystified by European tastes, but methinks this poll had very little to do with representing tastes from around these parts at least, it is more indicative of the international habit of hailing the naffness oft found on You Tube.

I dunno about Britney....I think Benny Lava was robbed!

1 word.. Rickroll.. is probably the reason why Dave

many moons ago my boss said a very unassuming polite bloke came into work and my boss was called to help him to buy some music equipment . The guy looked strangely familiar but not.. all became clear when he paid for the goods and they saw his credit card.. It was Rick and my boss said he was a very nice bloke. As for that boss, well I won't return the compliment.. as he was "sick" for 6 months aka working on his album (coincidence a relative of his was a doctor who was probably writing him sick notes)

I think everyone likes Stevie , he just comes across as a genuine / warm sort of person. I'm glad he got an award though, that was on the news today.

the best chocolate is from the Swiss or Belgium.. to qualify as proper chocolate , it has to be 70% + cocoa... which a fair bit isn't.. also real chocolate has a far shorter shelf life than what a lot buy in the shops.

    I like U2 though.

Britney, lets face it .. she's manufactured and nothing without the production team behind her like MANY more across the globe.

as for a "best ever" group.. that's impossible to say.. maybe more good things are to turn up , but even so there is plenty in the past who have remained pretty much timeless due to the quality of their work.

as for the current thing of ripping off european demo scene music and not clearing / crediting it.. well I could go into a bit of a rant about that, but won't

On a serious note: nearly every great jazz player who suffered in the good 'ol US of A usually flourished in Europe.

Ed we took to the music more here I suppose. John Coltrane, Miles Davis etc. but so did many other countries. Maybe party due to Ronnie Scott etc.

although some of the Drum n bass of old / new is heavily jazz influenced. Guess it's that Rhodes sound

the Japanese are pretty receptive to different sorts of music outside the norm though.

Yes, they've provided continued employment for many a band past their productive years (the Ventures are big there, still playing Walk Don't Run only faster).

On the other hand, they (the Japanese) also gave us karaoke, and I'm not sure I can forgive them for that.

really, it's been an escalating series of events... pearl harbor, hiroshima and nagasaki, karaoke...
