Very nice phil. This sounds like it could be used at the opening of a film. It is darker at the start than your usual work, but the piano part seems to balance it out nicely. That piano melody is excellent. Good one.

All my poo is like film music...its easier that way, don't really need proper structure...just mood. And yeah, I agree, it was a piece of poo till I added the piano...the middle was just hanging there without reference.

I think there may be a joke there somewhere, but i think i'll leave it.

The dark part at the start worked well with the piano and helped create an atmosphere.

    phil!! Yer back!?
We all missed you! We sent out a search party...but noone wanted to come to Canada!

I really loved the piano part! The strings sounded a little "fake" without reverb...but the mood was set with that tolling bell. Eerie!

Great theme in your music as usual! Love your melodies Phil!

Nice piece ... the only constructive thing I can come up with is that I'd change the pitch of the bell (lower) to contribute more to the melancholy/dark atmosphere of this track. And probably have fewer strikes as well. The pitch, as is, is too high and (ergo) happy. Like they chose another Pope or something. Go lower. Leave long tails. Space your strikes. Less is more.

I say pull the bells out completely....I think the strings hold the track just fine.

I'm with Kevin on this, in that I would lower the pitch of the bell, as well as setting it lower in the mix.
I wouldn't pull it out completely though, as I think it's especially effective along with the choral voices at the end (around 2:33).
    very nice mood piece.

are we talking about more than 48 hours of sleep deprivation? when do I add beer to the mix?
I think I already know the proper amount...

Thanks for all the input. Yeah, I was happy with the keys all along but struggled with the bell...but nonetheless wanted it. The strings, well I just took them along for the ride and yep, they need work as well.

I'll take the notes to heart this weekend and rework it based on the suggestions.

I've gotta do some retuning on the bells, I, like Kevin, thought a deeper bell would work better but it got sh!tty at lower keys.

This is only intended to be the first half of a complete piece. Like in Nawlans where they do the sombre music on the way to the gravesite and then punch it up on the way back. I need a Tower of Power punch up for a second half.

MDK, hmm...when it occurs is a matter of subjectivity or is it objectivity...nonetheless, when you've tried the track a dozen times, leave it for 20 minutes, come back and lay it down in one...thats about the right amount of time

Sean, give me a little more time, I've been single for 6 months but still have a roommate (if you get the gist) I just can't be that mean. And that brings me too far down to get into the mood often but that will change in another 6 weeks, then it'll be all tunes all the time. I'll be available for any collab and will be one of the most prolific bas!ards you've ever seen.

Really Dark sent me on an old road that I want to be on. I agree with the guys telling
you what to do with the bells - lower, then dischord - then resolve- it's the key to playing jazz.
I would pan them left and right, put dischord on the second
one - put it way back - maybe to the left -then ping pong - I don't know. Possibly do a
call and answer thing. It's your song.
The keys make it sooo... soulful. You can play the BLUES anytime
    you want.

Being the project (P5) is kind of short I would recommand you make the first movement,
(what is allready finished) - make a second statement (second movement) - and then come back to the theme.

That would be an ABA song format which I'm sure you know quite well.

I hope I can get to know you guys. I'm a bass player. Not to good with the keys.
    I try hard tho!!

    Hi Phil:

Just catching up on my listening. I like the somber feel. I especially like the piano work. There's some great emotion in there.

    great to see you back.

wouldn't change a thing it's all beautiful until you put out someone's eye <g> my windows media player put on the most beautiful visual display that i have ever seen it do; what i would describe as 'a macro micro cosmos interspersed with the representative interaction of all living things'. :-) the music makes me think 'times up, time for the world to end and the quiet to begin' that's why i never could critique, i'm just terrible at it. :-) well done, good to see you posting again.

Thanks ra, that was exactly my mindset while creating it. Kinda like you read my mind on that one.

I got more disturbing stuff coming soon.

    It's been awhile ...
" ...since I've gone and fkkt things up, just like I always do."

I've had some electron problems up until now, Phil. I'm just starting to get caught up, so I haven't given your song a listen yet. I just wanted to say that's it's great to see you back, man. As for the other, this too shall pass ...

Its just more of the old stuff with a bell that isn't low enough, strings that aren't true enough, but as usual with the same old boring piano.

By the way, love the tag "Continuity..." Ain't it the truth. Hows the gaters treatin ya?

Always wanted to do jazz, hancock is a god...but I'm a mere blues player who sometimes strays into places he shouldn't be.

    Thanks for the feedback.
