I've done something unthinkable.............

I took the  stock Gibson P-90's out of my Gibson LP Studio 50's Gold Top Tribute......
Gutted the electronics........
And ................I took off the.......Cream Hardware..........................Oh Nooooooh!
Ditched the Reflector bell knobs............

Then I.................

Blacked Her Out
Threw on some speed knobs
EMG P81 active bridge  p/u
EMG P60 active neck  p/u
2-25k volume controls
1-25k passive tone control on the bridge
1-RPC variable control on the neck
Set her up for some drop Dflat........

Man this little girl screams .........
I'm still thinking I'll likely throw an 18 volt mod on her...........then she'll breath a little harder.......

Before.........................................

After...........................

I know its not very "Traditional" or proper with the purists.............but heck the "Gibson" cork sniffers don't  appreciate "Studios" anyway............and I have a Worn Ebony Gibson LP Studio 50's Tribute that plays out a bit nicer so I'm leaving that one stock................for now.

The Cream on the Gold Top did look nice......... the p-90's weren't cutting it for me.....

I was going for something more aggressive.........

I like the Black Plastics, Speed Knobs w/EMG's.......its kinda..........mature "Metal"?

What do you guys like or prefer?

All comments welcome

    Nice one !

I recently added some gold SD Phat Cats + changed the pots on my Les Paul (copy) and it improved sustain, tone and general enjoyment.

Then I added a Gold Bigsby for fun and a bling bling effect And yes, it looks great, but wow, it plays great also !!!

    Cheers,
    Jerry

Tell me  a little more about the Phat Cats and their overall sound in the neck?

You modded a guitar?  That's it?  *Whew!*

When I read the topic title I thought you'd gone off and listened to John Tesh while drinking a wine cooler!

I like the "darker" look..... and I'll bet the tone is sweeter too.

With newer guitars, I really don't have a problem "rodding" them out to get better performance. If it was a classic original, I'd think twice before altering it.... that would not necessarily stop me, but I would keep all the original parts in the event I ever wanted to restore it to factory again.

    My thinking too,

I didn't add any holes or switches, etc and I  very carefully individually wrapped all the original parts and put 'em in safe keeping.

Gibson kinda  made an instant classic on the 50's Tributes...............the Gold Top's in-particular.

The The 50's GT's were wildly popular and surged in price immediately, they were going as high as $2000.00 on ebay and CL.
They priced out new at $849.00.

Gibson then released the P-90 60's Tribute's and the Humbucker 50's Dark Back Tribute's, which brought things into check a bit...........

But...... now all of the P-90 "50's Tribute" models seem to be surging again.............the 50's large neck profile ,light back,P-90's and Nitro finish have collectors grabbing them and throwin 'em in the proverbial closet.

For a Gibson they are a spanky, snappy semi bright guitar................I think its the raw satin Nitro finish, combined with the maple cap and chambering....very light and resonant.........even with the EMG's you can hear and feel it.
