"JIMMY'S BLUES"

Jimmy Gentry (jimmyman) is on fire...
Jimmy wrote and sang this song, and asked me if I would play some guitar...
Of course I could not resist, so I asked him to send me his vocal track and I'd play around with it... As usual, I wound up bogarting the production, and this is what I came up with... Jimmy asked me to go ahead and post it, and he would post his own version when he's not so busy...

Final Mix...
I recorded a new bass part... again...
Bumped the piano and National slide...
Moved the harp and lead back a tad...

how do it sound now ?

Now this is ablaze!! Mix is also rich and astounding!

Dynamics are especially clear and crisp, with mids lows and highs!

What about the harmonica-guitar morph? Could you explain that effect a bit?
    The harmonica is ultra smooth!

(Note: Ending got cut-off ... No negatives other than that)

I'd say jimmy was on fire... wow.

Mix is a bit muddy/mono, but the song is killer.

    Dang... impressed.

**** QUICK SOMEONE GRAB THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER, JIMMY'S ON FIRE !!! ****

Nothin but smoke all over the place ... Man .... This is **** SMOLDERING HOT **** .....

Yeah, the bass is hot and distinguisheable .... I like it ... it's got such a solid sound ... just back it down a tad .. and keep it distinguisheable!!!!

Really Sweet Vocals ... Jimmy Can Sing!!! .... Nice Tune ... Jimmy Can play Da Blues .... and the Guitar.

I think Shad is right about the mix ... a little muddy, but there is something to be said about posting this as it is, as Frank calls it ...
    bogarting the production
... No need for coverups because there ain't none, Sounds are raw but true to the instruments (You get to hear it just like it was done!) I really enjoyed being able to listen to it in this form!!!

So what else can I say except, Frank .... You never disappoint .... I really have to say that this has both of Your Styles!
Geeze Frank, such pure expression coupled with a very nice tone!!!! (I like that little choppin effect, So apropos)

Nice harmonica and Organ bits that really supplement this tune ... Just awesome ....

Only comments... I would have really loved to hear both of you going back and forth ( Question / Answer Style ) on one of these verses. That would have cemented this compilation of talents for me

I think the harp player caught on fire too! they all did. You know this is the kind of music that I love to play.. The bass isn't too hot for me but is it ever? Jimmyman, best vox I've ever heard from you. Some nice collabs comin' off this board. Frank, what do you run your harp through? Hot, hot, hot! I'm chillin' now and here comes the guitar again. Thanks, guys, this old blues guy is in heaven!

    Thanks all...

    New Mix...
I recorded a real bass guitar part this time... the old version was done with my midi keyboard...

I also did some panning, and processed the guitar and harp with the Re-Valver plugin...

I left the old mix up for comparison...
Please let me know how it sounds now...
    Thanks...

Great job guys - this is another good collab. The harp sections are excellent, and the guitar work too.

Great job on vox as well - you can definitely sing the blues.

I like the bass in the mix, but I hear what you mean - it's right on the edge.

    Hi, notnat,

Dang, I've been playing guitar for 39 years trying to learn to play the blues like you do. Really sweet playing, just beautiful. Love the harp and vocal, too. Aw, heck, the whole thing is smokin' hot from a playing/singing standpoint. I am humbled and I hope that, one day, I might get half as good as you are playing blues guitar.

My only observation from a technical standpoint is that the lead guitar sounds like it's in a different room than the rest of the band to me. It's like there is an ambiance (reverb? delay?) on the lead that is from a different sized room and I'm hearing early reflections (or something like that) that I'm not hearing in the vocal, harp or other instruments. Nothing wrong with that, but it sticks out on my system and makes the guitar sound like it's standing by itself, apart from the rest of the band, mix wise. It could be just my system and my room that makes me hear it this way so take this comment with a grain of salt.

Great damned playing and a very nice song. You and Jimmy have done a really good thing here. Congratulations. Oh, and I hate you. ;>)

    Best regards,
    Bill

You're right. I listened to the song the first two times on my monitors in my untreated room. Just now, I listened in my headphones and the guitar sounds just fine. It's got to be some weird standing waves/early reflections I'm hearing in my room. It sounds really great. Fantastic job!

RE: "Jimmy's Blues" (new mix) 2009/03/16 10:25:59 (permalink)

first ill speak of perception and by that i mean what things
appear to be to me sounds like there is some rythem work barley
    noticable on the left side.

and it sounds like you re recorded the solo and fill guitar work
thats why i say perception because i dont know its a fact. also sounds
like you did some work on the verb on vocals

i like your new bass. the song has a more "hip" sound on this
version. but the other one is good too. man i love em both!

its all a matter of taste so with that said i wouldnt say
anythings wrong with this mix, its very good

    i myself would do this.

put a multi band comp (sonitus) on the bass. on the lowest band
(80 herz down) set the knee to about 9 attack 0 release 2 to 500
or so. get it compressing 3 to 6 db the bring the level (gain)
of that band up until it adds a smooth low end that doeasnt
sound bassy so to speake just warn and full.

go to the middle band of the comp wgere its 324 to 1262 herz
and use the same settings but dont raise the gain and set the
"knee" on that band to 30. and use as much as 6 to 9 db of comping

Make sure attack is 0 on both bands

i say this because this bass sounds better but the other one has
a smoother (and more of) low end
the harp on the left and guitar on the right are too hot and too
far out. i cant say whether they need a touch of comping or not
again thats taste but id bring them to the middle (just a little) more

whats happening is they are jumping out in punch and level
sort of sounding like they are coming from out of nowhere and
jumping into your face. i like that i like i like that a lot its got style
its just a little too strong.

i think of what ive said as more what i do than any crits.

now let me say frank man you just blow me away with your
skills and how you can put things together like you do.
i get a perception of allmost two differrent songs more than
    two different versions.

    isnt that COOL

well after writing this i went back for another listen to the first
verse of both versions. now i like the first one better. everything
is smooth and balanced as well as full

the second is thinner and wider without the warmth in the middle of
the other one. i would guess some of us "old bluesers" would
    like the first

ok my vote is the first version. thats my story and im sticking to it!
till i change my mind LOL
but man alive both are just to cool

    jimmy

Bass in first version hands down. The first has wayyyyy more bass appeal. It's got that low crawl that really fills the room.

Nice ... It really sounds significantly different? I think Jimmy's got you covered. I'd like to hear that Bass come back into the mix a bit more. It may just be me, but the Mouth Organ sounds is a bit too hot now.

There's things I like about both .... Especially the Singin and Playin .....!!!!!

You guys are just plain great, though!!!

There's things I like about both .... Especially the Singin and Playin .....!!!!!

You guys are just plain great, though!!!

    - TAP -

Ok Tap, Jimmy,,, the final mix...

    "Jimmy's Blues"

I recorded a new bass part... again...
Bumped the piano and National slide...
Moved the harp and lead back a tad...

That opening harmonica grabbed me. What a collab! That blues/jazz git playing is outstanding! Nice vox Jimmy! You guys are locked in tight. Very soulful performence gents!!

Thanks for listening Larry... Check out the final mix when you get a chance...

    ORIGINAL: No How

Bass in first version hands down. The first has wayyyyy more bass appeal. It's got that low crawl that really fills the room.

I agree... I think I've finally got it right now... plus I brought up the old National resonator and the piano a bit... Check it out now... Thanks...

Yeah, nice groove here guys. That blues harp is so sweet. Tasty licks thoughout on this Frank. Nice smooth blues vocal Jimmy. I'd have "gritted" it up a little, but its real good this way too.

Mix is real solid, but one thing I noticed. The kick drum has a click, but no real "oomph". Noticed it with headphones too. Minor nit.
