JM Jarre type pad

Guys,

I'm trying to figure out how to make a pad sound that sweeps up or down in pitch over several bars; Jean Michel Jarre used them a lot - think of the sound of a falling bomb.  I thought it must be some sort of envelope, but although I can see the envelopes for controlling volume, pan, etc. on the track view, I can't see one for pitch.  Also, if you were using a "pitch envelope", how would you be able to specify the note you want to start on and the one you want to finish on?  I'd like to apply it to sounds from Zeta+ 1, Pentagon or possibly Dimension Pro.  Any ideas?  I'm sure I'm betraying my beginner status here, but then again, that's what I am!

There's a pitch envelope in Dimension Pro.  The start note will depend on the note played on the MIDI track.   Where it goes, up or down and how far, will depend on the envelope curve that you draw.  The default maximum depth is 12 octaves but you can alter this.

You can also use the pitch bend wheel parameter. I'm at work at the moment, so I can't go into detail. But with the pitch bend wheel you can sweep at least two octaves above and below the root note...

Twelve octaves is rather large. Do you mean twelve semitones (one octave)?

Oh... another way of achieving this is setting a slow portamento time and just playing two notes at the desired interval...

(I wouldn't mind betting that is what JMJ used to do in the good old. Using the pitch bend wheel would have been a bit hit and miss)

Aye... but I wouldn't get very good odds on it though...

I reckon that it is still the best way to recreate this effect. I just wish I'd have thought of it before I posted my other nonsense lol

I've just checked and it's actually 2 octaves.  My apologies.

However Rapture's pitch envelop allows up to 8 octaves (expressed in cents as 9600).

No need for apologies Kev :^)

And that's some pitch envelope range... 8 octaves is still pretty damn huge. But thanks for that.
