I watched this last week - very good documentary. Definitely worth watching. He's on my top five, too.

Thanks! I was wondering when this would show up on Netflix.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Don't have Netflix, but do have the Blu-ray. Even if Metallica is not your thing, and he is not your idea of a great bassist, you gotta give a big shout-out to Robert Trujillo!

Yeah, I'm not into metal, but it just goes to show that real musicians respect good musicianship regardless of genre. Even Jaco talks about being in a Country and Western band for a year...saying he had a blast. I'm glad this was made. It certainly cleared up a few things for me. It's sad to see a genius musician fall so far, and never have the chance to rebound from it. Jaco...more than just a great bass player. (I have a few of those Joni Mitchell albums on original vinyl. Shadows and Light is one of my favorites, and the first time I was exposed to Jaco and Metheny.)

i bought this when it was first released on dvd... i met jaco, back in '82. it was a very cool time, he was quite lucid, and actually jammed with us on stage, to loverboy's 'turn me loose'. LOL

Yeah, lucky guy! I never even got to see him live. By the time I saw Pat Metheny in Chicago, he was already gone (after the first album, Bright Size Life - a must-own, in my opinion).

How accurate is the portrayal? Even though he was an amazing player, he could be quite a horses butt.

Yeah, they covered the bad sides of Jaco too. I never knew he was bi polar, and it seems in the later years he had other problems. He was arrogant or confident his entire career. He was a great bassist either way.

i never thought him arrogant.... just working at being his own press secretary. guys like that, could walk the talk, so it's really never bragging when you back it up. jaco. man, what a wild dude. i actually met him twice more after that, once in marathon Key, and one in miami. back then, i was traveling full time, playing, and we spent ALOT of time in south florida and the keys. jamming with jaco, well, that's another story:
in a nightclub in Deerfield Beach back in '82 i think..... he came in, looking like a dirty bum, with no shoes, and a pancho (a real pancho, not a sears pancho.) he stood in front of the band (Top 40 dance/rock/cover band) and watched us play for at least half an hour. he stood in front of each musician, watching.
i was playing my best, and trying to show off. i couldn't recognize who he was, even tho i was a fan at the time. but i knew he was SOMEBODY, just couldn't figure it out. after we finished the set, and as we left the stage and took off into the crowd for a break, he approached me, stuck his hand out to shake, and said 'nice band, i'm jaco pastorius'. LOL i was shocked i said 'of course you are! hey, let me buy you a drink' so, i walked him over to the side bar, which nobody was really hanging out at, and we sat at the bar, and i bought us both a rum and coke, and that's when we started talking. he said "i just finished recording the album that's going to turn the f'kin jazz world on it's ear" i said 'i don't doubt it, based on your first solo album.....what's it called?' he said "Word of Mouth". we talked for 20 straight minutes, and then we had to do another set.
i said 'man, i'd love for you to come up and jam a tune with us, would you do it?' our bass player had an awesome Alembic Omega bass, and a super tight biamped rig, so i thought jaco would surely dig that, but he said 'well, i'm not so into the bass right now... i just bought this new keyboard, called a prophet V, and i'm into making sounds with that" well, we HAD a prophet V on stage. LOL so i asked the keyboard player, who was a jaco fan too, and he said 'of course, it's jaco!' so, we started to get up to jam... immediately, the *ssHole clubowner came over and said 'i'm not paying you guys to jam, my customers want dance tunes'....
so, we played Loverboy's 'Turn Me Loose', with jaco pastorius on keyboards.
HEHEH

Awesome story. I'm glad to hear Jaco was cool enough to do something like that. Arrogant was a bad choice of words, but he wasn't humble as far as his musicianship goes...and yes, he could back it up.
