Mesh
That's very interesting Kenny as I never thought to use it like that and glad you posted it. Is the tracking much better/smoother/less latency when using it in standalone via loopMIDI?
Mesh ,
What I'm gonna tell you here exactly how I use MIDI- Guitar ...first a little back track ..
I started w the Mac G B version ...I used it pretty much standalone , it was simple , it was very fast and all I had to do was set it 's midi output for GB ...for my OS back then in Mac , MIDI Guitar worked great in Logic , GB and everything else ..
When I had gotten the Win version it had gotten a little more complicated for me because I had to run a scan and then set it up as a Synth enabled in SONAR ...Now don't get me wrong , I was OK w all of that , the problem was my buffers were set to a setting that brought up a yellow triangle in MIDI- Guitar ...whenever I used it inside of my DAW ...
I don't remember how it happened but I did get hipped to this and my MIDI Guitar life changed for the Much Better
http://www.tobias-erichse../software/loopmidi.html After this point in the conversation I will tell you how I use MIDI - Guitar first as a standalone , then as a Plug enabled in my DAW ...
I have valid arguments for both approaches . Both approaches can yield very different satisfying results ...
MIDI - Guitar used as a standalone app with and with out loopmidi will yield two different Night and Day types of results...I feel both approaches I will mention for standalone are very satisfying
First lets start the way MIDI - Guitar comes from JAM Origin bone stock ...
Once you have scanned your synths and plugs you have effectively turned your guitar into one Bad A$$ed version of a completely self contained Guitar synth workstation ...
I love it because MIDI Guitar hosts VST's , and Amp Sims very well ...
The CPU is light and you can save and recall an infinite number of combinations of your synths and plugin combinations ...
This is exactly how I would use MIDI- Guitar if I was playing out live doing a Gig...
At home I also use it this way to have fun and also to learn my new synths , and plugs ....
When using MIDI-Guitar as a standalone with loopmidi , you don't load anything into MIDI -Guitar unless it is something you really want to use to keep track of
Now what do I mean by that ? You don't load any synths or plugs at all ...you just make sure you have loopmidi set as your midi out put ...
Now the things that I want to keep track of are simple ....first I set my buffers really low ...128 or 256...
Then I will usually inset the Poly tuner from tools , and then I will set up the transposer from MIDI effects ...
Honestly that's all I need from the MIDI Guitar interface because I always want to be in tune and I also like changing my Midi ranges within MIDI Guitar ...not my DAW
Now since I already have loopmidi installed it shows up in every DAW I have in Win 10 ....
All I have to do once I have inserted a soft-synth in SONAR or fill in the blank is I just have to set my MIDI input of my VST to loopmidi .....
Working this way is absolutely lightning fast because MIDI- Guitar is no longer locked into the CPU strain of SONAR my computer wont run SONAR at 128 w a full mix ... at my normal buffer settings MIDI Guitar throws me a warning ...
I have successfully used this standalone approach , MIDI - Guitar w loopmidi in SONAR , Reaper , Samplitude Pro X 2 , Abelton Live 9 intro, BIAB , Harrison Mixbus 3, and 4 ...Traction 7 , Mixcraft 7 , Project 5 , and SONY Acid Pro 7
Now using MIDI Guitar as a plug in SONAR ...
That approach I find useful also. Yet I use it in a very interesting way also
not like how most people use it.
First thing is to make sure after a VST scan that you always remember to pull up the plugin properties for MIDI- Guitar and set it to synth enabled ....
I used to use Midi G.... like some folks may when they first get it ..
I would throw it on my guitar track , bang away and do a spray and pray approach just like Machine Gun Kelly would do if he traded in his machine gun in for throwing pasta on the wall hoping something would stick
then I got wise .....
I came to the conclusion that it is much easier for me to control my guitar as audio first then it is to spend my time effing around in the piano roll ....
So I do one of two things ..
I will be very deliberate about the guitar part that I'm playing that I want to convert to Midi ...
My old way was to play along w the track and play my gtr while triggering a synth ...in most cases that does work good ...my other approach is to take great care in recording my guitar part dry and when it is still audio I may do any of the necessary edits to my audio that it will take to give Midi Guitar the cleanest possible signal for glitch free operation ..
Another tip that I have learned the hard way is this ...When I'm just looking to add a little flair and color to a very dense song with a lot of tracks going on ,while I'm not in stand alone mode because I'm using MIDI Guitar in my DAW
I'm much better off pulling a work mix out of SONAR and setting up a separate mini project to just do my midi guitar tracks
WHY ? because I can set my buffers really low when I'm not playing midi guitar to 30 or 40 tracks at the same time ....
OK for those of you that are still with me and if you are still interested
I mentioned that using MIDI - Guitar inside of SONAR has some often not found hidden uses ....WHAT ?
Yes
I only have Melodyne essentials , yet I have used midi guitar to extract polyphonic guitar parts for educational purposes....
What would you think if I told you that it is possible using MIDI- Guitar inside of SONAR and to take a world class guitar player such as Joe Pass and turn his performance into MIDI ....
I did this today ...a very short excerpt ...this was done in real time w out a single edit ..excuse the delay i liked it
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13548515 A while back I had shared something with Noel and Ole ...I ran a Midi Guitar conversion file past both of them ...
I had posted it upstairs in a thread ...I'm posting it here for educational purposes ...since I feel there is a lot of untapped potential that came be done with Jam Origins MIDI - Guitar ...
This file was done in SONAR , I took a Joe Pass Virtuoso track called All The Tings You Are and placed it into SONAR ...
The I placed MIDI -Guitar on the track as an effect / synth enabled ...
I pulled up Strum Acoustic set the track to record and as the Pass track played MIDI Guitar triggered the Strum Acoustic VST in real time ....
This is what I got ...I did not edit this file in any way ...the only thing I did was to pan Joe to one side and the strum acoustic to the other side ...
to be perfectly honest if I edited this I could make it sound a lot better ...the thing is unedited you can really see and hear how close MIDI Guitar had gotten on its own
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13311064 Any way it has been nice rapping w you ..I have to re edit this thread because JAM Origin came out with a new version of MIDI Guitar while I was typing ...
Jam Origin is now at MIDI-Guitar Version 2.2.1
all the best ,
Kenny
