James Taylor Cover (new mix down)

In response to constructive criticism received her and elsewhere, I remixed last night's audio.  I think it significantly improved it.  For those who commented on the vocals specifically, just understand that God made me a much better guitar player than singer.  It has been a lifelong curse.

Hi Steve, this does sound better. I can't sing my way out of a paper bag so I certainly won't criticize your vocal ability but the vocal does clip in a couple of places. You can easily see this as large spikes on the soundcloud wav display.

    Greetings, Rik

Yup.  Those are actually pops caused by lack of pop filter, so I'm not going to mess with it further.  This was simply an effort to get my first two mic to two track effort down so I could determine (from input from people like you) whether the acoustic sound was sufficiently natural.  I am trying to use the room as the most important instrument so that I don't have to do much f/x-wise in mixing down.

I wouldn't attempt to do a James Taylor tune.  Toohard to measure up to his vocal.  You did a nice job here, though.  Kinda like Dylan does Taylor.  :-)   You're a gutsy guy and you did a nice job.

Funny -- JT's early vocals were horrible (just listen to the Apple Album and "One Man Dog."  He really didn't start "singing" until maybe Walking Man (5 years in to his career).  The difference is, I've been playing and singing since 1982, and I haven't improved much at all, which explains why I'm a lawyer first, musician second.

Based on this piece, I think you can easily rate yourself a fine musician. Your guitar playing is as good as anything I have heard James Taylor play and I rate him very highly. Your vocals are also excellent and suite this song perfectly. I hope you do more JT covers as I would very much look forward to hearing them.

    Best Regards

Hey man , I thought you did a great job trying to capture the  vocal tones in James Taylor voice and then singing it in your own way in this song of yours .

    Nice job !

Thanks, everyone.  There will be many more JT covers, along with David Wilcox and John Gorka covers, once I get my signal chain figured out, and (hopefully) once my Eastman arrives, which is a guitar much more suited to the intricate fingerstyle stuff I do than my Ovation Longneck.

It needs a little pumping up, very low in volume.

Nice vocal and guitar work!  Could use with some tweak on the recording setup.  Are recording both guitar and vocals through two mics?

Nice guitar playing and the vocal are just fine. I have to disagree about one-man-dog. I think some his best work is encapsulated in his first three albums, singing as well as guitar playing - but that's just a personal preference and all of his work is top notch. A lot of his success is partly due to his incredibly talented band, close friends and producer ( Peter Asher ).

I agree with Daryl in that the level could be bumped up a bit.

I recorded with one mic on the guitar (to one track), and a second mic on my voice (to a second track), altough that second mic also picked up some guitar.  Will work on the level, though I had some clips in there already.

Trying to decide whether stand-alone preamp is worth it, since I am now using the preamps in my audio interface for phantom power.
