People actually buy that worthless crap???
Well, if I understand correctly the "Patinum status" was based on Samsung giving away a million copies for free... so well, maybe not so much... I think the whole thing is a mess and lowers the status or standing the of (cheapens) the RIAA. The whole thing is just weird. I don't guess it affects me much one way or another but I bet it affects someone who is.

It almost seems straight forward. The charts have always recognized whole sale quantity purchases. For example; They don't directly audit how many Eagles records Walmart sells, they audit how many Eagles records the record company sells Walmart. best regards, mike

Yeah, and it isn't the first time. IIRC, The BEATLES song Can't Buy Me Love 45 was certified Gold before it was released because of pre-sales of over 1 million. That wa back when a Gold Record was 1 million sales. Same thing I guess... sort of, except they were actual sales. J

jbow Me? I don't know... who is Jay Z?
+1 - Who the hell is Jay Z? Good question. I'm guessing he's a rapper, which would explain why most of us who concern themselves with real talent by those who put out actual music, have no idea who he is. This as opposed to just 'talking', which is all rap really is - a short cut to fame & fortune for the talentless, without any of the dedicated work of learning the discipline of mastering a musical instrument over the years like REAL musicians & singers do. If he wasn't riding the coat tails of beyonce's fame & fortune, I doubt he'd be known by anyone whatsoever - but still working graveyard shifts at 7-11 instead.

I find this statement to be very insulting. (Everyone knows it takes more talent than Jay-Z has to work graveyard at 7-11. )

I was reading the Wiki article on The Guess Who having been asked to learn Share the Land, and came across a discussion on an interesting album I’d never heard of called “A Wild Pair”. It was a Coca-Cola promotional item featuring The Guess Who on one side and the Staccatos (who became The Five Man Electrical Band) on the other that you got by sending in ten Coke bottle cap liners and a dollar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guess_Who The comment that struck me in the Wiki article was this one (under “Transitional years and Let's Go (1966–1968)” in the article): Guitarist Randy Bachman has stated in interviews that he believes A Wild Pair sold enough copies in Canada to qualify for gold record status; however, because the album was not sold through normal retail channels, no certified sales figures are available. The comment, reminded me of this thread and maybe I am stretching it a bit but I think I see a corollary (I think that is the right choice of words). Samsung buys a millions albums and gives them away and the album is certified platinum. If Coke had records (no pun intended) on the total number of albums given away in exchange for bottle cap lids and that number was high enough for a certification, with the Jay-Z rule modification could/should an album like “A Wild Pair” be certified retroactively. Note … I do realize the Randy Bachman was probably just being facetious and the numbers were not high enough for any type of certification so, I am just throwing this out as a hypothetical.

I like monkeys the Guess Who saw them in New Orleans at a fair/festival in the early 90s , I felt sorry for them then at the merch table signing autographs, I purchased a cd and had them autograph it

It says Jean was a vagabond and petty criminal, who later took to writing and died in 1986. Sounds like your average forum poster, ya?
