Jazzboys - co-lab and first attempt in X1

I rarely just start a project from a blank sheet. This time I did that and mostly clicked the notes in PRV. I had a reasonable verse and chorus but missed a break. I got totally remixed version from a friend, Jay Thomas, who laid synths and scratches and built up a modern sound than I would not accomplish. I took his ending part, modified it and used it as a break between the last choruses. Three choruses are maybe too much but since I wish to add vocals some day I built it around that purpose. JT:s version: http://soundcloud.com/busstop18/jazzgossen my version: http://www.box.net/shared/rdgjg16l9fd702ioqko3

I listened to both (i love your work).  I really prefer the piano/jazz version.
The melody and feel evaporate in the synth version somehow....not sure.
I loved the piano version but the last chorus at the end, although sounding melodically beautiful, did not fit the rest of the piece IMO.   It's a whole other cool song for sure but i thought it 'left' the rest of the song.

No How: You pinpointed my worst fears. I had big problems, melodically, getting that last chorus to fit with the break. I tried the two alternatives: 1) to change the key of the break in order to end up on a dominant chord before the last chorus (which actually then has to be in Bb instead of F). 2) changing the key of the break (last chords C and maybe C7) and  then to the chorus again in F. Neither of them worked. After listenening again and again to this (third alternative: no key change) version, I was brainwashed enough to accept it. Your remarks make me sober enough to seek another solution. I think there has to to be a more gradual transition to that last chorus. Thank you for your kind words and golden ears.

edit: My VSTi:s make X1 crash BTW.   Thinking about reclaiming those 99 dollars and go back to 8.5...

I'm loving it the way it is.

No How: No way. Still the same. I wish I had a better bridge to that last chorus though. Some day... You're just too kind. Thnx Rick.

I think this version will be final one: http://www.box.net/shared/rdgjg16l9fd702ioqko3
I am still a bit uncertain about the break and if the final chorus really fits? It surely would be nice to hear what you think.

Very much preferred your piece.  Some of the other stuff felt out of context in places (mind you, this is just my personal opinion).  You play beautifully.

i listened when you first brought this out, and didn't like it. now relistening...i think the chorus is out of kilter to the verse (being neither syncopational nor harmonically challenging) but i love it! the verse i think has some great bass, the chorus just a beautiful tune. it still sounds a bit like two songs put together but a decent vocalist (hallo Julibee...) could make it work...

philz: Thanks a lot man. I thought I was too conservative for the other version. At least I am not alone.
mgh: You surely pinpoint the hesitatations I had about this piece but also give a solution which I also bore in mind, a vocal is sometimes very "forgiving" for musical leaps and inadequacies and I think suggesting Julianna for that purpose is one of the best bets one could get. Lyrics next then...  Greatful for those comments. Thnx!
