Jerky Cursor

We may have discussed this before, but i don't remember an answer. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, when I start up X1, the cursor—that line that goes top to bottom in track view and moves along with the music—jerks from one beat to another instead of moving smoothly. Ideas what causes this?

Most likely you accidentally hit the PAUSE key.   This puts Sonar is a specific mode (refer to the manual for more details).

Hey, Billy. I tested that and you are exactly correct. Hitting Pause | Break turns that mode on and off. Thanks a lot for the help.

You're very welcome.   This particular query comes up quite often around here lol.   It appears not too many people spend time with the manual anymore

Now you, too, can tell others (and trust me, there will be others) who ask about this as well LOL.

    Enjoy :)

When in Sonar, hitting the PAUSE key puts Sonar into a special mode to save CPU cycles that normally would be eaten up by Video redraws/updating and such.

Most people will never need to use it, however;  especially if one is using a modern high powered system.  But for those occasions where one might need a tiny bit more CPU headroom, hitting PAUSE may help (with the knowledge it will also give jerky screen udpates).

The reason I use pause is because “stop” returns playback to “now” pointer, while pause stops playback at a point you actually stopped playback without returning to beginning position. I don’t see relationship between jerking and pause. I use it. What you suggesting makes no sense, because this defeats the purpose of “pause”. I have seen jerking on my laptop with no use of pause. It puzzles me why Cakewalk would use pause function to save some CPU cycles. And why would they place it where pause button supposed to be? Most of people assume that this is what it meant to be- to pause the playback- not to save the CPU. Are you saying, that pausing playback is not its purpose?

They're not talking about the pause button on Sonar's interface, they're taking about the pause/break key on a standard Windows QWERTY keyboard.

If I wasn't doing this I'd just be doing something else...

Oh, duh... to my defence- that was not explained. I do not use a keyboard. Mouse only. Thanks for clarification.  But wait a minute. You mean the long space bar?

No, it's a key that's labeled "pause/break". If you're using a keyboard layout other than English, it's probably it might be labeled "PB". It's the rightmost key on the top row, third to  the right of the F function keys.

But if you don't use a keyboard, why does it matter?
