Jesus Loves Me

I realize this song may not be your cup of tea. But my experience in church goes way back to when I was two weeks old. After church, my dad forgot about me and left me in the nursery. I’ve always been thankful he went back to get me! Lol. Anyway, I’ve known this song forever, but the chord progression came to me about a year ago. I finally decided to try to get it down. If I would have known it would take me four weeks to even get it this far, I may not have tried it. Anyway, I’ve worn out two good friends’ ears (and mine!) on this one, so any comments are welcome!

Janet, please take this "personally". I have watched your music evolve and it has done so, and continues to do so. This song is heartfelt. The emotion and the passion comes leaking through my headphones. I "literally" had to stuff some Kleenex in there about half way through. Really, TREMENDOUS improvement!

I liked the piano, and the way the other instruments voice off of the lead melody which is the piano. I like the choice of instruments. I like the drums. The overall composition, it was all very good! I "particularly" enjoyed this!

Thank you and , way to go!

(and I’m not just saying this because you’re a beautiful woman)

Janet, nice arrangement. I could hear this with huge choir, it has a nice dynamic and flow. Drums are nice in this too. There was a time when I was getting a lot of piano time in and often worked on variations or interpretations of this theme, one of my favorites. Lots of feeling in this. Mix-wise some of the instruments sound like they have different reverb than the others which takes a way from the all-in-one-place feeling of the piece here and there, and the reverb on the drums seems bright to me - but that could be a personal preference for sure. Nice work, Janet.

Hey Mamabear - Very nice. I can connect with your motivations here. Last year when I spent 7 months on my Christmas CD I became a big fan of the old Christmas hymns and how beautiful they were when you gave them a little contemporary treatment. I did a slow jazzy version of Jingle Bells that hit #5 on SoundClick. (It's still on my site, check it out if you find time.)

These old tunes are often gems in the rough, it's just that years ago they were too frugal with their chords and rhythms. I now find myself re-arranging simple old tunes and there is wealth of good stuff there.

You've done a great job here. I enjoyed this, and it is way better than the original! Contratulations.

Thanks, Bill. I'll go back and look at this later. I've heard it WAY too many times in the last few days. But I appreciate the tips!

And thank you, Daryl. I appreciate your comments. Wow--more great stuff on your page too. And so many songs! I'm looking forward to listening to them all when I get a chance! . I thought about doing more Christmas songs too. Sometime... So many songs, so little time!

    nice version!
almost has a beatles feel to it.....
i dig the cello patch as well...
i think you should experiment with the percussion track, to make it warmer, and no reverb...
more intimate, with some kick on the low end of it....

Scott--thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Keep working on the keys!

Mark--thanks so much. Vocals, eh? Well, I'm thinking about it and trying to work on it. But don't hold your breath!

Batsbrew--thanks. The cello patch is from Garritan Pocket Orchestra. I really enjoy using the cello too--I'm glad it sounds decent. I'll see what I can do about the drums. Thanks for mentioning that!

I realize this song may not be your cup of tea. But my experience in church goes way back to when I was two weeks old.

It saddens me that given the above quote, it almost sounds like you have to apologize these days for having a merely Christian sounding title.

I'm neither an evangelist nor a particular a good example of the faith I was born into but this is a lovely piece whatever the denomination and you should rightly be proud of it, and it's inspiration.

I'm sure it just fashion that promotes the style because had it been billed as devotional music from some forgotten creed written in the scale of the bamboo flutes of the era many would be saying...Oh, wow man!

But I say to this piece...Oh, wow man! It evokes some of the great Christian music of the late 19th Century, the hymns I grew up with, some of the best 'tunes' ever written. Lovely stuff.

My father is a preacher and has been one my entire life. When I saw the thread name I figured I can leave this one alone. I am very glad I didn't. What a beautiful rendition of the children's classic.

    Very well done!!!

    Ron

I think I might put a tad more reverb on the floute during its solo, same for the Picc. These are both very minor things and very subjective as well.

Jon & Ron--I knew the thread name would either draw people to it or keep them away, but it is what it is. :) Thanks for listening and for your kind comments!

Ron--I just read your edit about the flute and piccolo. Thanks for that. I'll go listen to them again.

Janet this is beautiful. Good job. This shows what can be done with what we consider to be a simple "childrens song" with a little imagination and creativity.

I was at a church one Sunday when the bass player in the praise band played a solo. He was a very accomplished jazz style player. Just him, on his 5 string bass, and the melody sounded hauntingly familiar. About halfway through he started singing....."Yes Jesus loves me..... I was blown away.

only critique: at 2:36 the sound ambience changed ( it sounded like a "room size" change in reverb) and returned again at 3:10 after the key change. I probably would not have noticed this if I wasn't listening on head phones (buds)

    Janet,

Thank you for sharing and creating this song. I do really enjoy some "classic" worship songs when they're performed as instrumentals. It allows the listener who is familiar with the lyrical version to impress the words into the musical composition. Kind of like a heart-song. Nice work.

i finally get to hear one of yours.......I gotta say that I love this piece....I do not think that I've ever heard it before......but I am glad that I stopped by and heard you on this.....your playing is very accomplished.....your creativity with the instruments is very good indeed......I like your choice of instruments and counter melodies......I love your choice of music.......and don't worry that it took you four weeks...after all it's taken me 52 years to hear it for the first time......and if you had not of spent four weeks working on it I may NEVER of gotten the chance......
Music is what we make it.......sometimes we need it to be funny.....sometimes sad...sometimes hot and sweaty......sometimes comforting........regardless.......I really do not think that it is our choice any way.......we are just the vehicle to the means.........and that means is always for a reason........we may not understand or know what this reason is ....... but we must fullfill the requirement any way........so, even if you hear it for 10 more weeks.......do it........do it with love...do it with joy....let it fill you....and enjoy and cherish every minute you are able to.........because with out realizing it you may some how be touching some one else with out even knowing it......
Your only quest should be.......I just want to be better next time.......

    NICE JOB!!!!!

I enjoyed listening to the song! Of all instruments, I have a soft spot for the piano, because I've played it since third grade. Church has been a major part of my everyday life, education and work. In my own music, about one-third of my songs are based on familiar hymn tunes. So, I like hearing other people's music of this type. Keep on making "tunes".
