Thanks Robby. I Am pretty proud of this mix. Could some things be tweaked? Probably, but overall we (collectively) are happy with how it turned out.

I wasn't really paying attention to the vocals I guess? And I wasn't familiar with the original so I had nothing to compare it to. I went back and listened again at 3:45? It still sounded good... But I wasn't comparing it to anything other than what I like. I know folks try to cover things sometimes and make it "exact..." I know this because I work with one of the best people on the forum for covers? Mr. Markno999... "He is a perfectionist?" And there is something to be said for this? However, I also appreciate people who do covers, and add "something original?" to the cover. Again not having heard the original, I am not making a comparison either way. 

But I know what sounds good? :-) And what sounds like it was shot from the barrel of a pistol? LOL!

Oh that Randy? Yeah I liked the vocals? And I am a singer :-) The chorus was tight, the verse is a bit looser, but it's like you put your style on it? Please do not misinterpret "looser?" I do things tighter and looser... You have to be able to do this as a singer IMO. If you don't? It doesn't sound "like you." People can choose to like you or not? But you need to sound like you. And I listened again and thought the vocals were "excellent throughout."

Ummm, ahhh, it may have something to do with the delivery? 

For example, if HR is asking for someone's opinion on an employee's performance? And you have strong feelings? You may recommend remedial action? With a performance improvement plan? (PIM)

The two responses may carry a similar inner meaning? However, they may be perceived differently?  

(I'm sorry for that right there Lord, and please be with the Pygmies in New Guinea...)   

Still in all, I think the performances, delivery, recording and engineering were quite good. But my ears are not as good as some of the mix masters.

Not concious of hearing the original but aware of the originals "sound".

Sounds perfectly fine here, actually Ed this is one of the best mixes of yours I have heard.  Very open lots of air and space nice job.

I don't hear anything 'off' at 3:45, but I do at 4:02.

I think if you are going to cover a song, that you should at least have the courtesy to the original artist to at least listen to their version. It's a matter of respect, even if you aren't going to sound the same.

I happen to know that both Randy and I have seen John Hiatt live at least five time each and I know we both own CDs by him. Given that this song is one of his staples (IOW, I've seen him 8 times live and he has never once NOT played this song) I'm pretty sure Randy has heard it live more than once too. I also know that James and Randy are fans of JH and therefore even if they've never played the song in a band both jumped at the opportunity to play the song on this collab (out of being fans of JH's work).

As I see it, you seem to have taken James highlighted (bold in red) statement above as "never heard the song" when in fact I'm pretty positive he has since he asked me (before providing any tracks and hearing the project at that point) "who's doing the delayed guitar?" Well, did James ever listen to the song? UH DUH-UHHH!!!! How would he know about the delayed guitar?

Bottom line is, we all three have listened to the song (at least once but I'm sure quite a few times each) and decided to do a different take on it. I did not play any of the original bass lines in the song, by choice. The drums are not the same, by choice. We wind the song on chorus soloing, by choice, but the original song ends on verse soloing. The original song fades in the soloing and we end on struck chord, by choice. I believe it's call interpretation.

I'd like to suggest if you want to hear an exact cover of the song HERE IT IS but DO NOT go to John Hiatt concert expecting to hear an exact cover as I can tell you I have heard him do it differently EVERY TIME I have seen him. Dang his eyes, what's he thinking?

Earlier you commented on the production. I'll not agree or disagree. You're opinion is yours to share. And I respect that you shared it.

But when you twist facts, with no knowledge, such as implying some (if not all) of us "having not listened to a song" that's just plain rude, IMHO.

Have these people done something to offend you personally? Because that's how it looks... You should lighten up a little pete. Nobody died? And no one said anything about anyone's mother. And an argument can be made that they do sound pretty good. So to argue too aggressively against that is to present either an unbalanced/unstable (FROM ME!?) image, or one that is vindictive for some reason.
