Just Purchased Platinum

Hello all,
I have been away for a while and decided to come back, so my knowledge is pretty rusty.  I previously had X1 Producer and now have X2 and X3 Producer editions on my computer.  I just purchased Platinum and didn't want to make a mess of the install.  Would any of you be so kind as to give some advice here?  I feel like I need to uninstall previous versions of Sonar before I install my new software.  Is that recommended or should I just leave them onboard?
I have VST's all over the place and my plug-in manager has to scan about 7 or 8 locations to get them all.  Takes it a long time but I am not competent enough to move all of them.

Thanks for any advice on this.  I'd like to get started soon.

I presently have Windows 7 Professional on a Intel I-5 running 16 Gigs Ram.  I have a 250 gig SSD boot drive and a 1 TB HDD.  I am running a Focusrite 6i6 external audio device that I am not overly fond of but it works okay.

Personally, hard drive space permitting, I would leave them installed.  This is because you might have projects that use plugins that came with the earlier versions of Sonar that do not some with Platinum.  If you uninstall those earlier versions of Sonar, you won't be able to load those particular plugins.

If you're sure that your projects do not use plugins unique to the earlier versions, then it should be ok to remove the older versions.  Before you do, however, you might want to make sure you can lay your hands on the original install disks of the earlier versions.  This is so you can partially reinstall them if necessary.

Before doing the install of Sonar Platinum, you should visually confirm that all of your Windows updates are up to date. Also download and install the latest drivers for your audio interface and graphic card.  Do this by visiting the respective manufacturer's websites or your hardware, rather than letting Microsoft do the update.

Others may have other suggestions as well.

Agree with promidi to leave the previous versions installed.  I have a similar PC (running Windows 8.1) and have Sonar 8 and on installed with Platinum.  No issues with this at all.

Having VSTs scattered across different folders doesn't necessarily slow down the scanning process.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I'm a bit rusty, as I'm sure you can tell.  Still need to install as administrator, like the old days?  I have a corrupted synth called Pentagon I that has a fantastic vocoder function.  Tried everything I can to get it to work, including re-install.  Too dumb to be able, I suppose.  I really liked that synth.

I will certainly do the driver updates.  That is great advice as well.   I have an Nvidia GeForce Video card that I forgot to mention earlier.

Platinum has SO MUCH stuff, it is a bit daunting.  If I already have Addictive Drums 2 and Melodyne 4 and other items, will Platinum overwrite them or just ignore a new install?

Problems with Pentagon can be overcome by reinstalling it "As Administrator"

hello
waiting for an update to complete and read your thread.
I have the older versions installed too, sometimes I set one up at another pulse rate and use it to record at slower rates.
I had to install the 32 bit version x86 to use all plug ins,. some of the plugins, many, do not work on 64 bit.
best way to polish off rust is to get in there hands on.
having an issue now updating the 32 bit version,. , its not happening,. sent a message to SONAR wont hear back until maybe after Christmas. the new versions work very well,,. and after my first update everything was good, everything I use anyway, I mostly use SOANR to record and mix with.
hardly every use synths, tho I have tried the old synth, pentagon,.on my old machine,32 bit memory with a 64 bit quad core,.i used 32 bit versions of sonar back then. is that not a 32bit synth? I don't recall now,. as I say, some plug ins not working under 64 bit version.
I'm using an old workstation with a pair of very very expensive when new xeon 64 bit cpu's and 12 slots for memory cards. all full, 4GB cards 48GB total,. hardly every use anything but a small portion of the memory, just over 4 GB usually, like 4.5 or 5GB.
my old machine would not go over 4 GB, 2 slots, 2 GB per slot,  and would Exit when SONAR asked for more then 4 GB,
so I made sure I don't have that trouble again any time too soon
I have 4 hard disk drives for operating system hooked up to it ,. and a whole buch of others,.
I use ssd for record and then move data to the raid arrays after the ssd is full, recording fragments hard disk drives.
I used to defrag, back when you could see it on XP, defrag every day after recording,. when I move files to the hard disk drives there is no fragmenting on moves or copying, only on record,. and using electronic drives, ssd, fragmenting doesn't matter, only have that one I use to record on and one more usually disconnected, for an on line operating system
old dell workstation outstanding, is a monster, can be dangerous, microwave freqs,.(that's anything over 1.2giga hertz)(microwaves shakes apart the nucleotides of deoxyribose nuclic acid,.DNA,.can break the weak hydrogen bond holding the so called nucleotide parts together. if that happens , an error in the dna will replicate itself,.,. big trouble.,. no way to repair it at this time or when I learned it anyway,. and people at the hospital did not argue the point, agreed every time.
have to keep the cover on at all times while it is running.
I have no rust at all,. polished, I been on sonar for 9 to 10 years now, full time with lots of over time. fyi

Re: Just Purchased Platinum 2016/12/24 21:53:56 (permalink)
Up and running just fine so far.  I went into X2 and found project files I wanted to keep.  Platinum was able to open them without any problems other than a few plugins not available.  No big deal for me, so I went ahead and uninstalled X2 from the system.  X3 may be next, but I'm not going to get in a hurry.  Still working on my layouts and I am using an Akai MPK25 Midi Controller.  So far it is working without issues, though I can't find a control surface for it. Oh well, I'll work around that until I get a newer Controller that will show up.  That thing was made back when XP was still the big stuff.

I went in as Administrator and tried to set up the Pentagon 1 synth that I like so much.  It had a cool Vocoder function and I could understand it and make it work.  It was a crapshoot and did not work  I'm moving on.

I really thank all of you guys for giving me advice.  I am grateful.  I'm sure I'll come squeaking back in a couple of days with something that will not work.  LOL, please be patient here.

Merry Christmas all!

That's probably ok, provided that you never use V-Vocal.

One more thing to try with Pentagon.

*** Only try this if you're comfortable editing the Windows Registry ***

Naviagte to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\rgc:audio software\DXi\Pentagon I

And change the associated permissions
Then run the installer "As Administrator" and it should work

you are exactly right about the registry location.  there are a LOT of permissions listed.  Do you mind giving me some idea of which direction to go?  Feel pretty dumb but I would like to try this.  What can it hurt?  Pentagon already doesn't work.  Thanks for your help!
