Just a demo of Symphony Series by Native.

The song is not finish yet. It misses the vocal on these verses. The melody in not shown by any of the instruments.

Here is the Symphony in solo:

Here is the Symphony with Metal band:

Well, I am working on to learn it's strengths and weakness. I hear it can be some kind of industrial sounding so I might toss this away.

But what I found out on my little experience, is that some of the instruments sound bad solo. And they sound bad outside their good register spot. So for this Orchestra pack, you have to play it, instead of trying to make it sound as what you have as an ideal. But mind you. I am not an Orchestra guy. You can hear that.

And 32 GB of RAM is not enough to run more than 8 of the instruments. Sonar crashed because of not enough RAM to read the sounds. You have to freeze all and just unfreeze the section you are working on, if your not having 64 GB. I might be looking into buying that… I am so happy I’m not married with kids.

Cool demo.
Some of the strings and drums sound a little too artificial for my tatstes, but I like the guitaring. Is that you playing?
The kick could really do with humanizing - sounds like my old 505.

Thanks.

I play it all myself. (exept female vocal)

I will look into the drums. And the strange thing is that drummers wants to play as even as possible, and we programmers want to make the drum sample use as many samples to diverse the hits as much as possible. But I will look into that.

The Drums are Superior Drummer 3 and the "Modern Metal High" preset. So I think it must be something in my programming and not the sounds. Maybe put down the velocity some?

And the 16th beet on the kick cam have two different goals. You have this accent of the 1-2-3-4 and the other is as even as possible to make this as a even stream of kicks. both is cool in their own way. The even one is maybe used most in extreme metal, but the one with accent is more used where 16th beat is not that common? Some extreme metal programmer use all hits at max completely quantized.

Half an hour later..!

Found out my midi on that project (not the one you hear in that mix because every instrument was freezed) was somehow quantized to 8th beat with duration. Every Midi track was damaged. I was sweating like crazy… But I remembered I have sent this project to a friend for demo a month ago. That project had the good Midi files. And I now have pasted the “backup” midi into the main project. And now its saved. Yeah.

But I tried to take down the velocity of the drum track. I took all down “8”, and all the drums sounds more easy to listen to. They were not at 128 but I think I remember I put on a “+ 20” vel sometime. And a drummer cant hit that hard on faster things. Especially blast beats. That is later in the song.

I listened to the "full metal mix" and thought - what am I supposed to not like here? Very Cirque du Soleil. The strings were mixed a bit softly perhaps. The hi-hat maybe could have a brighter dusting of reverb.

Sounds fun. Sounds good! What's the existential problem here?   :)

What if anything are you going to do with this? Are you scoring a show or something?

Thanks guys. Well its just a project I tossed away years ago. It has orchestra in it so I just revived it to play a little. I might just toss it away after this. The audience is so freaking used to listen to band that are 1 000 000 times better than me, so I have no plans of giving this out. I will newer be a “good enough” guitarist, I will newer be “good enough” to writer/programmer/producer. That’s not my goal anymore. My goal is just having fun. And releasing it would not be fun.

If that was you playing in the band song, I thought you played quite well myself. I'm not sure what you could have done better.

Thanks.
That really helps the mood.
Its just how it is for me and my music I guess. Been like this since the 90s. I have been singing, but was never as good as others, played guitar since 84 and never been as good as the others. I know. I should practice more. But the fun part of practice fades when friends never want to work with you even you have been in the same church since 1978. Basically grown up together. For me I don’t want to try to “impress” people. I know that wont work. I just want to try to be creative in my corky way. The few people I have worked with have gotten their money. Like Nina on this song. I have tried even to ask local people to do things together and such, but they say f u in their nicest way. I’m kind of used to it. I don’t want to get thick skinned because of just “music”. Being kind, honest and a good friend is more important for me. I will never ever say to someone that they are not my friends just because they criticize or don’t like my music. My music isn’t that important.

One of the reasons I went solo acoustic years ago is because I could never find anyone who wanted to play the same kinds of songs I did. Plus, I've always been more drawn to acoustic fingerpicking than anything else, so it worked out. Now at the age of 59 I'm finally starting to sing a bit too, so it's never too late to reinvent yourself.

I don't care for the NI symphony series that much, but I really like what you did with it. The piece could easily be on a movie sound track for example.

I write music because it's the best way to bring out the creative side in me.  I post it here just to have other people listen to it besides my wife and a couple of friends.

A few years ago I put out a couple of CDs through CDBaby with the thought that maybe I could make a little money, but that's not happening. Not fun. But making the music is fun so that's all I really need.

Yeah.
It should be fun. If not your doin it wrong.

And i think the NI sounds best in a mix too. And blended with orher instruments they can sound ok. Alone you can make some sound tracks. But i dont think you can make a Bethoven symphony sound that great.

Re: Just a demo of Symphony Series by Native. 2018/12/08 13:42:03 (permalink)
I am a little crazy here. Giving you the whole song. It is long. I wanted to record the song with all the lyrics. And the German lyrics from before 1600 had 9 verses, and the Norwegian guy translated putted on a 10th verse.

Anyways. You hear the Symphony Series in context.

I didn’t want to much of if, because the song then wouldn’t be the same anymore. At least I didn’t like the too much repetitions on the verses I showed above. The orchestra could stand alone as a Preludie tho. I have full Symphony on the 3 verse. But no percussion. That didn’t fit. And just violin 1 and 2 on verses 2, 4-6 and 10.

I have to add that there is some difficulties rendering this. I had to do the violin 1 and 2 one more time before making this mix for instance. Its because the long notes on the last verse was choked. I guess that’s a known Cakewalk bug. And non of the instruments are paned out of the box. You have to pan them yourself. If you don’t, it will sound wrong. I guess that the stereo image on the track take in account that the violin 1 on the back and left has another panning than the violin 1 guy on the right in front. So giving the violin 1 a 40 to the left will spread them out in that aria. Many of the sounds need to blend to other sounds to sound ok. And on its own I guess the Symphony Series is to clean? You need to ad some noise or “sound” to them. But that’s what I like with them. They blend perfectly to a mix with a band. They don’t ad to much other than just enough of the sound they represent.

I don’t know if this makes any sense. But here is the link anyways.

Boring detail, but the vocal on verse 4-6 is just a cut and paste of verses 7-9 to fill in the gap. I was supposed to record a male vocal there, and have it together with Nina on verses 7-9. But it is not recorded. I don't know if it ever will be. Time will tell.
