Just a heads-up....E-MU has released PCI Express versions of the 1616M ,1212M, and 0404
I was looking into the 1212M and decided to Google it and saw this release.....I'll now be watching for these models. ************* E-MU 24-bit/192kHz audio interfaces are now available for PCIe equipped PCs SCOTTS VALLEY, CA – August 25, 2009 – E-MU® Systems has announced the release of three new models of their celebrated Digital Audio Systems for the PC. That's awesome news, just in time. One question: Does the 1212m have all the same features (same mic preamps, analog soft limiting circuit, etc) as the 1616m (just less inputs)? The way it's worded is kind of vague regarding that, it could be one or the other.

No, the 1212 doesn't have the breakout box. It has the inputs on the back of the card itself, so it's a little limited. I had the 1212m, and was very happy with it, although I swapped mine out in favor of a Mackie Onyx satellite so I could have mic pre's and a hardware headphone/speaker out. I'm still considering replacing it with the 1616m, because it had a better sounding d/a convertor (the 1212m and 1616m use the same pci card).

I've only heard great things about them. Still I know to take anything I've read on the internet with a grain of salt. Is there a noticeable difference between say, your Mackie ONYX converters and the 1212m's? Am I better to get a decent pre-amp around $400 or so (say a summit audio or RNP) for vocals and D.I. plus the 1212m, or to just get the 1616m?

1. WOO-HOO! I'm on the verge of a new computer... this is great news! 2. @Monkey23 - I can't speak for the Onyx preamps... so I won't make any comparisons... but, I have had both a 1212m and an 1820m (predecessor to the 1616m) and have been very pleased. The Patchmix software has a bit of a learning curve, but once you have that down... no worries. The sound reproduction is stellar, and in my (biased) opinion, you can't do any better without jumping to the next higher price range. HTH Russ

I don't know about the Emu directly, tho Martin Walker of SOS used one as a benchmark for years, so I imagine it is fine. The same converters as in the Digi is marketing BS - there are only a couple of converstion chips on the market and all companies use the same ones until you get far upscale. The mackie is great - Ive used it (some) but a producer I've worked w/ uses it as a main rig. As to the 2nd question, which to get, there is an incremetal increase w/ either set up. The flexiblity of having more preamps w/ the inputs is great, and I'm not sure how much better an rnp preamp would be. The summit comes from good heritage and seems a step up (w/ the tube mix output), but is a single channel unit. If you can get it and the Emu and only need the one preamp, that would seem to be a winner since the summit is a keeper. @

The Mackie convertors are decent, and you can do plenty with them...but the m version Emu's are better (stellar for an all in one dealio). I would definately get a 1616M over the equivalent Mackie product hands down. I wasn't as impressed with the Onyx pre's like I thought I would...they work...nothing to write home about.

Monkey23 Russell.Whaley ... you can't do any better without jumping to the next higher price range. HTH Russ Which is? After the upper-end EMU cards (in the $400-$500 range), the specs I read don't really seem to take a dramatic leap up until you get to the $750-$1,000 tier; I typically associate brands like MOTU, Lynx, or RME with this tier. And, yes, the Digi stuff... but like AT said, the converter chips are pretty ubiquitous until you get way uptown. Russ

So just to clarify, the EMU 1616m's converters are in fact a step above the rest (at least in the same price range) yet are not the same converters as in the Digi stuff (which quite frankly means nothing to me as I haven't tried/heard them), and that nonetheless are the best bang for the buck. This is what I'm taking from everybody's collective posts (thank you all for answering my questions by the way). Am I right? I've seen the Motu ultralite and RME stuff, but it seems like it might be more than I need. I wish someone made better two (mic) input audio interfaces with good converters and good pre's that left out all the bells and whistles (DSP effects, 10 inputs/outputs,etc) to keep the costs down. My guess is that there are a lot of "home studio" musicians like me who never need more than two inputs (quite frankly I only need one) but want quality (and by quality I mean semi-pro to pro) converters and mic pre's at a reasonable cost.

bennisixx, I think I still have an old Digital Audio Labs Card-D laying around here. It's an ISA card. I guess it's time to recycle it. Like you, I got it 6-12 months before everything went PCI. I'm not sorry I bought it. I got some good use out of it I keep it around to remind me how quickly things change. It may be time to recycle it--or donate it to a museum. Monkey23, I agree. Both "m" cards are a great value. As long as you can figure out how PatchMix DSP works.

This is what I'm taking from everybody's collective posts (thank you all for answering my questions by the way). Am I right? No, the EMUs are about the same as everyone else's in the price range - there ain't that much difference between the same class (ie. pricewise) of converters. They all use the same spec'd chips. The more expensive stuff -- Lynx, RME -- have better electronics surrounding it. Emu makes a lot of noise about using the same converter chips as the top of the line Digi, but so do other companies. It is really a matter of drivers working on your system. An extra dB of ADDA doesn't sound like much if you can't hear it through the stutters. either the mackie or the Emu will sound good - the Emu has a small leg up being Pcie (unless you run into a conflict). Lynx makes what you are asking for -- a 2 i/o Pci card that can add a 2X ADAT daughter card in case you do decide to expand later. No preamps, but it is $600+. But you don't have to worry if it is good enough - lots of pros use Lynx and you can scoff at mackie or EMu. Otherwise, buy one of the units and make sure it works w/ your system. If not, send it back and try the other one. Either unit will make good music and you can add better preamps if and when you want. @

I am waiting for those PCIe version, hope they start to offer it ASAP. It's hard to compare EMU products to RME or Lynx. EMU is best for its price. Lynx and RME are another level. Very expensive for someone who have home studio with almost no acoustic treatment. You cant hear the difference. So for a lot of home musicians Lynx and RME is waste of money.

Hi - I see no one is mentioning anything about the 0404. Is there something wrong with it? I have an external Allen & Heath mixer (ZED 14) which I like for the pres (for my purposes) and mainly just need a way to get the stereo mix from the A&H into my PC. Are the ADC's okay in the 0404? Thanks in advance for any help!

I thought I'd also share this... I just got the new pc (see sig) and am trying to get an audio interface. The pc mobo only has a 16 bit on board AD. I had good luck on my last PC with a Sound Blaster Audigy. I thought I'd try another Sound Blaster. This pc is PCIe only - and only 2 slots open. Originally I thought I'd go w/ Firewire but if I can get the internal solution I'd prefer it. The SoundBlaster PCIe X-Fi doesn't work for me though. The WDM driver won't work in 64 bits and SB support isn't responding. The ASIO works but then I can't also use the USB (I send a bus out via USB to my ZED mixer to feed into a Vocalist Live). The X-Fi doesn't include a 64bit ASIO driver. There's a hack on the SB forum but it didn't work for me. Right now my plan is to return the SB card and wait for this EMU PCIe solution. It just doesn't look like anyone is selling the PCIe cards yet.
