Just got a slammin' deal on a pair of Yamaha HS8 monitors!

My M-audio BX8's treated me well for the money, but I always loved the sound of the Yamaha HS80's and couldn't spend the dough...
Well I decided it was time to upgrade.  I know the HS80's are no longer made & the new ones are the HS8's so I went down to guitar center for one more listen (figured they look pretty close, made by the same people, probably sound similar too) & to buy, the guy there says ya gotta check out the new JBL's we just got in yada yada yada.... So I do, nope!  I still like the Yammies better even though they are $100 more each.  They list at $499ea.  They sell everywhere at $349ea.  I say the heck with it I want them, ring em' up!    The guy scans them in and his jaw drops.... He goes "Did you know there is almost  another $90 or so off each of these for the sale this weekend?! "  I said "no?" not getting excited figuring it was a mistake or an error somewhere....  They were on sale!  It wasn't marked on sale but it was.  I walked out with them for about $262 each!  I nearly crapped myself.  That deal was so damn good I needed a cigarette afterwards!    I should have just bought the sub to go with it at that point but I didn't.    I will have to pick that up during their next holiday sale.   I never enjoyed Columbus Day so much!

Funny I was just looking at that same Yamaha  Sub that goes with those monitors at Tom Lee music and he pointed at a Yamaha BR15 Cabinet they wanted out of their hair and I got it for $90! It's new just scuffed a little from moving it around the store for the last couple of years. He said nobody wants passive speakers any more.
Shopping on the internet is fine, but sometimes the best deals are in a real store. Good score. Those Yammy's are on my wish list too!

Yeah, the monitors are great so far, I spent about 20 minutes listening to music I have liked for years & my past mixes on them & then started mixing my current project.  Happy Camper!

Kicking back and listening to your favorite records is the best way to break in a new set of speakers! It takes more than 20 minutes, but give it a few days and your ears will eventually train themselves to "know" what a good recording is supposed to sound like on those speakers. Believe it or not, the kick-back-and-enjoy technique is actually based on real science and is more effective than all the scientific measurements you might undertake.

Just be sure to adjust the volume so you're listening at the same levels you normally mix at.

I think you'll enjoy those speakers, especially given the great deal you got. If nothing else, you now have those cool white cones like all the big boys.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yeah Bit,  I have been listening more to dial my ears into them.  I also tried setting ARC up for them (I just put a post in the software forum) which I haven't used in years and it keeps crashing X2 on me.   These sound sonically similar to the BX8A's I had, just clearer, cleaner, the lows are more defined  and the high end hiss the M-audio's put out even when not playing music through them is noticeably absent.

For what is worth, *product review*  I have now had about a week to get used to them & mix some new projects on them.  Tonight I exported some stuff and hopped in my truck for a listen.  If was so freaking happy when my mix sounded identical in my vehicle (Eq set flat) as it did on my monitors!  If it were possible to jump up and down while sitting in a truck I would have been doing it!   I have never experienced a perfect translation like that before and the only thing I changed are the monitors.   Damn nice product in my opinion!  Flat, true reference of what you are working with.  I can't imagine needing to get another set. Ever.?
*Your results may vary, but this is one happy mix engineer!

    Yeah - awesome Chuck!

I wanted a pair of them when I was deciding on a set of studio monitors but went for the Event ASP 6's for my own reasons at the time - but was really impressed with the Yami's.

Good for you Bud! Glad you like them.

I just bought a pair for $300 out of a studio that is upgrading.  At $300 I figured I couldn't go wrong and could sell them if I don't like 'em, but I already have monitors with white speakers ;-)

Do you have a pair of the NS 10's?   I wonder how they would compare side by side in an A/B test.

I've used the NS10 and didn't really like them.  I didn't find them particularly flat either, but lacking low end.  One studio I was mixing in, that was their main speakers, and it was horrid.  This was a "b' level studio just outside of Nashville.  I believe the newer generation Yamahas are much better, with this latest HS series even being the best.  I've heard these particular HS8 speakers I'm getting, but I wasn't familiar with the music, so I didn't know really what they were doing.  But the reviews on the HS8 seem to be much better than the HS80 and I honestly haven't found anything said negative about them.  They roll off a 37hz... a little lower than 42 of the HS80 I believe. Appears lots of people really like them and they're the best <$1000 preferred by many.

Back to the NS10...  I have a pair of the original Auratones, and I actually like them.  At very low volume, you seem to be able to still hear everything in the mix and it still seems relatively balanced.  I kind of think the NS10 got put on the "bandwagon"....almost like ProTools is now....especially since we all know Sonar is much better!!

oh...btw, my other "white" speakers are JBL 4311wdx, that I've had for a loooooong time and know them well.  They're 3 way with 12" woofers and a little bump in the vocal range.  Other than being "dated" , older style speakers, I really like them.  I'm thinking the Yammies will be a nice compliment, and I'm going to put them fairly close to me and really push the "nearfield" concept.  My JBL's are almost midfield ...and I have them (and me) in about a 8ft triangle.
Here's one of my more "colorful" mixes !! ;-)

ChuckC - thanks for the posts on this.i'm presently collecting my pennies week by week to finally get some good monitors.

I'm seriously leaning toward KRK VXTs, but reading your post continues to keep my mind open about worthy other monitors I should research.

There are some YouTubes by Sonicstate...or somebody like that, that make some good comparisons that I feel you can kinda actually "hear" the differences, when they compare them to the JBL and I think some KRK.  The JBL and Yammies seemed the same, with the HS8 maybe being my favorite...and I'm a JBL fan for sure.  I"ve read about as much as I could on the Yamahas, and they seem to come out on top, from what I've read... at least in the price catagory and 8" two way speaker venue.

take this link with a grain of salt, but it's interesting.  They also compare the HS8 to the older HS80

Good man, I hope it helps you out.  That is after all what these forums are great for.   The VXT's I know are supposed to be better than the rockit line and I have heard some decent reviews about them.... I disliked my rockit rp5's a lot, they are not computer speakers in my den,  Grab some songs you are real familiar with, put them on a CD and go hit a guitar center or some other store where you can listen to them side by side.  You want flat, not flattering.   All frequencies should be well represented without being hyped.
