Just got an email about my Waves update plan
Hey Guys: I have 18 Waves plugins. Use 6 of them religiously. Just got an email about my update plan: $457.20 for a year. Again, that's for a year. I don't think I paid that much for all of them. I probably won't do it . . . .

max WUP cost is $300 if you use all your plugins on one computer. Check the box affirming that if that applies to you. Right now they have an extra 25% off, plus extra through a dealer.

I have the Gold bundle plus a couple of other Waves plugins. The price they gave me for an update plan was a little over $250. I paid $300 or so for the bundle in a sale. There is no way on this earth I would pay Waves $250 for updates especially given that many of the plugins in the bundle they have no intention of ever bringing up to date with modern UI's etc. I love the plugins I have and use them all the time, but Waves' update philosophy and pricing is an unequivocal rip off.

Something must be coming. I got an email like the OP did. I've bought all my Waves stuff on sale over the last 3 years. I've got 16 plugs and most of them are old and never updated. Waves thinks I'll send them $497 US for the WUP. I laughed so hard I almost blew a nut. I love the plugs, but their idea of a warranty is insane.

Are you guys using the plugins on several different computers? I have Mercury, Abbey Road and SSL and after all the discounts WUP was $191.

I think their WUP prices are probably just inconsistent and/or messed up. I have Gold, H-Reverb, IR-1, and Codex and they quote me at $163. Kinda silly if you are getting quoted at $191 and you own more or less everything they make. It also doesn't add up correctly. If I select the three individual plugins, they quote $64. If I select just Gold, they quote $60. However if I select the whole bunch they quote $163. So it costs me about $40 extra to renew all the plugins, as opposed to renewing them in parts. That is all with the "I run this on one computer" checked (it makes no difference) and I've only ever installed the plugins on one computer. Basically for the price they are asking, I'll just let coverage lapse. If there's something amazing with the v10 upgrade whenever it happens, I'll work out the cheapest way to get it. But for money like that, no point in paying for upkeep. Particularly given the price I got most of the stuff at.

My quote from waves was 225. I then take that to a dealer like everyplugin and get ten extra discount. I get you though. Just buy mercury and then you are set :)

When you select multiple plug-ins/bundles, they are taking the expiration date that is furthest out and then adding a year to that and extending all plug-ins to that date. The extra cost is the prorated cost of the extra days added to the plug-ins that would otherwise be expiring sooner.

I just don't see what is so special about Waves plugins that it costs so much to keep them updated, when other companies offer free updates.

Waves is cool as far as quality, but the ethos, karma, whatever is in the dark ages. Dumped those bastards after they refused to activate my cheap GT Solo plug. They sent an email and graciously offered that they would not invade my computer and deactivate the plug, but they were cutting off future activations, transfers. New rules. Didn't say this in the initial purchase. The jerks did say that they felt my pain, and I could go back to the original license contract they were soliciting for a mere $20 more. What's $20 betwween friends. Was not the money issue, and those thieves can sit on my middle finger and twirl, if they remotely deserve the honor. Downloaded the cracked GT available everywhere. Me and Waves coexist in peace as I clean my finger from their contamination.. WUP is a mind blowing joke at the insane prices. So many, many, many beautiful, highest quality plugs that can do anything Waves can do with no crap, no extortion, no changing the contract after they have your currency in their bank. Think I'll pass on this one, but don't have nothing but cracked GT3 to upgrade. Aborting their garbage WUP is a No Brainer. John

Nope...sorry Koby...you don't get "free" plugins. You MIGHT get one or two heavily discounted plugins but you could probably pick even those up at an even more discounted price if you just wait a bit. And you are still paying something for them via the WUP. I don't fault Waves for this...it's much like all the new subscription services that everyone seems to be offering. The only difference is that most of the new subscription services guarantee you new plugs, features, etc... On a monthly or yearly basis. In all my years of WUP I have received exactly ONE new plugin...Maserati Group.
It's actually kind of odd that Waves has kept the WUP system. They used to have high prices, intransigent copy protection and draconian upgrade paths. In the last several years they have realized that to compete in the current environment they must come down from their high horse and start selling things at reasonable prices which includes having enticing sales on a very regular basis. This they have done. Kudos. I suspect the WUP will follow suit for, as you can see from the above comments, (and countless others on many other forums) it is roundly vilified by one and all.
In short, Waves WUP sucks. And, with the possible exception of the random Mercury owner, I challenge you to find anyone to gainsay that statement.

The difference is that with Sonar and others you DO get constant ongoing updates. With waves...not so much...unless you own one of the big bundles. And even then, unless that bundle is Mercury...not so much. Plus Sonar Platinum...the arguable equivalent of Waves Mercury...costs less than half per year than the WUP to renew. And waaay less to purchase in the first place.

When they dominated the industry I couldn't get a 5 % discount on any of their products.
Now they just about give their stuff away with these daily sales and they come up with this ludicrous over-priced update plan.
If this was pre-planned, it seems a bit sinister.

I *did* say 'price points aside' ... I'm new to Waves stuff so I don't know the history of their updates or the value the updates might represent. I do know that darn near everybody in this niche is trying to get some kind of ongoing revenue stream going.

Hi BobF: A reasonable point, but what I would add is that with SONAR I actually do get monthly updates. With Waves, since I have individual plugins, there aren't any updates (at least that I'm aware of), so I would pay $457 annually for support. With SONAR, even without continuing the update plan, you still have this forum, so a degree of support is available to any user for free. Lastly, even though you set the price point aside, that is the point. A $457 annual fee for updates seems, to me, to be usurious. But, I guess that is Waves prerogative. All the best.

Waves is the Intuit of the audio world..... Although perhaps not quite so bad. I'll never forget when Intuit told me that they were disabling my ability to email an invoice from Quickbooks, but that I could have it back if I upgraded to the new version (which, apart from that, offered me NOTHING new that I needed in the way of functionality). I eventually upgraded a couple of years ago, and since then I've seen other little areas of the program "break," presumably so I'll be tempted to upgrade to 2016 or whatever they're on now. I'm pretty much locked into Quickbooks because my accountant requires it, and there isn't much else available anyway that doesn't suck. Waves, however, needs to realize that there are SO many other options for producers these days. There is cheaper and there is better.

I'm sure if my email was an offer to pay them $457 I would have the same reaction. I wouldn't pay it, and I would likely be pizzed about the prospect of my prior investment shriveling on the vine. $100-150/year for Sonar is a pretty good deal given the year one "track" record. When we first bought into the model with Cake, we didn't know what was coming either. We'll see how it goes with all of the companies.
