Just had to have my boy put to sleep.

Sad day for my family we've just had to have our old puppy dog put down. He fell ill last night was no better this morning so got him into the vets they ran loads of test's but said he was really poorly and would not recover.

I got him when I was 14 from a rescue center never met a dog with so much character such a laid back dog.

R.I.P Dennis

Man...I'm sorry for you.  I had to put down one of my best friends...a Jack Russell just last March 31.  I held him as they put him to sleep and then cried like a baby.  I can still get upset "if I want to"... so I know your feeling too well.  It's tough, but it is true that you know you can rejoice on the great life I'm sure you helped your buddy to have.  When you're ready.... "help" another to have a great life as well.
    Hang in there...

It's been a weird day today, our other dog has been looking for him she noticed last night the kids have asked about him (they are 2 and 6).

he has left a massive hole in our hearts but we have laughed at the funny he things he used to do, thank god he was a daft old hound.

thanks for all the kind words.

If you were to ask me what the best day of my life was, I'd have to think about it, make a list and rank each high point before I could answer the question.

But if you were to ask me what the worst day of my life was, I'd be able to answer that with a precise date and time.

It was the day I had to do what you did. A lower point than even losing my parents and sister, because the dog's life had been entirely in my hands, and it was me who decided it was time for him to die. Me who sat there on the floor at the vet's and held him and tried to reassure him in his panic as they stuck him with the needle.

I will never do that again.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

It's a very hard decision to make bitflipper, at the time I couldn't face being with my dog when he was put to sleep.

But several times over the years since I wish I had been there...it's something I will always regret.

And also having been through it all I kind of don't want to get another dog again so I don't have to go through the hurt of loss.

Always a sad thing because they are family.

Some of the best dogs I've had were pound puppies, rescue mutts. And while the loss is great, and he will be missed, take some time to grieve, and then go rescue another dog. The new one will never replace the old one but will, with time, carve his own unique place into your heart, and for his short life of 14 or so years, give his everything to you in the form of devotion, companionship, mischief, and, of course, love.
