Just ordered a Roland Octa Capture

I hope I picked a good unit to replace a flakey Saffire Pro 40.  All the reviews I see are positive including a Craig Anderton review that seems to place it as the next best thing since "girls"

I decided to go with USB rather than another firewire unit.  USB seems to be a little more stable than firewire and I can use this with my laptop for on-site recording.

    I've had the Octa-Capture for a week.

I've tracked bass and acoustic (rhythm) guitar on CD project I'm doing for a local singer (10 songs). I've also done some test vocal recordings using a Shure Beta 58 and an MXL 990 mics and the test vocal fidelity was very good.

This is replacing a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 which has very good preamps and what I call "transparent" - what you input is what is recorded.  What I've done so far with the Octa-Capture is on a par with the Saffire Pro 40.

The only issue is a firmware upgrade that is available from Roland (upgrade firmware from 1.0 to 1.5) and an update to the Roland Octa-Capture control panel (software).  SOME users, as reported on this forum and on the Avid/Pro Tools forum have had some problems with the device after upgrading the firmware (dropouts/noise).  I'm avoiding the upgrade for the time being.
