Just ordered a pair of KRK Rokit-8s

jbow I am excited about them. Got the iso-pads and 10" cables. I am going to try and make use of one of the interfaces I already have, hopefully I can get the R16 to do as advertised, if not the Line6 UX-2 seems to do well. I have an M-Audio O2 keyboard I can use and an oldie but goodie Yamaha PSR-2100 which was (at the time) just under the Motif. From reading, I think I can set it as a controller either with midi cables through the UX-2 or by using its USB port... don't know how well it will work as a controller but it does have some decent onboard sounds... so with the monitors, I am going t start where I am and if something falls short, I will get something new. It is all too easy to just buy something new when what I already have will work. Send me the yellow speakers!!! Sweetwater has the Rokit-6 and Rockit-8 monitors in stock. Julien

 
 

Depending on what you had before, you'll probably do ok with those monitors. I used them (the original ones) for about 5 years....I generally had a lot of trouble getting the low end right in a mix. Also had trouble hearing mids clearly....but I put out some great work with them. Just took a few reference CD's to get things balanced out right. I really didn't know how much I was missing until I moved on to a set of Focal Twin 6's. But if you treat your mixing room well, you'll get years of use out of those KRK's. BTW...I would think 10 inch cables are a bit short?

 
Hi Hook... thatks for the comment. I really don't have a dedicated space yet, well I do but am still working on it. Trying to find other places for stuff in the room, getting rid of books, just need to do a general set-up in there. I have had trouble comitting to the room because it has a bit of an odd shape, it is about 12x14 with a 4x6 dormer-to-window offset, and an offset to the door that is about 4x4 ft. I need to take down a silly ceiling fan that was in the house. It has huge bananna leaf fan blades. The windows have plantation shutters... I am not sure what to do with any of this stuff and have never treated a room. Frankly I have been thinking about just going with the IK ARC system to compensate for the room. I the mean time I am going to be in a room (dining room) about 14x20 with one end open into a two story foyer... so I am going to have to really do some testing. If I can't mix there I will move somewhere else. The last time I tried to build a studio/music room I made a huge mistake (it was OK for mixing but you couldn't record live electric guitar in it).. I put soild foam on the walls, sheet-rocked it but I made my mistake with a drop ceiling, though I insulated it well to soundproof it as well as I could... there were two mistakes. A drop ceiling will rattle like a huge shaker if you hit a chord on a 50w JMP, and the wires to hang the frame transfer the sound right into the floor/ceiling wod and into the room above... live and learn I guess. It sounded like a good idea at the time.
This time I am going to take it slow and fix problems as I encnounter them, then maybe I will get it right. I don't know if the ARC system will work as advertized but if it does I will be happy if not I can add some traps as needed.... but for the time being I am going to have to test and try and hope for the best. I may need some other ears to listen to some mixes.
I think 10 ft cables will be long enough because I don't have room to move the monitors far enough to need more cable. At first there wil probably be a 4 ft triangle between the speakers and me.
Can you suggest some good CDs for listening and testing. I do not like the newer over compressed type mixes some are putting ut these days, I like a bit of dynamics. A couple I had planned to use are some older songs but god I think, the first especially "Low Rider"by WAR and perhaps some mid-era Fleetwood Mac like Bare Trees and maybe Rumors and of course some CDs that, t me, sound similar in style to what I am tying to mix which will at first by some Neil Young style tunes and some that, in my mind, remind me a bit of the Highwaymen. some traditional country, some with Traffic and Free influence too. I reckon any song that I am really familiar with, and familiar with the way it should sound, or the way I like it to sound would be good to use for tweaking the sound and I guess for the time being I am going to have to check mixes in the car and on the stereo, at east until I am comfortable that I know what I am doing. As you can probably tell, I am pretty much a beginner though I have played at it for some time, though not seriously enough to work through the learning curve. These are the first decent monitors I have had... so I bet I will like them a LOT.
 
Do you think it is a good idea to try recording and mixing a few cover songs for getting a handle on things? The only recording I have ever done has scratch tracks, just guitar and vocals. I intend to get some good multi-tracking done now that I have time. I just hope to avoid costly mistakes and time consuming work for nothing, it is why I am moving slowly, watching and reading everything I can find and asking a lot of questions. The first songs I am going to do are prety simple acoustic/vocal pieces that will have maybe three guitar parts, a bass line, and some vocal doubling, and maybe some pads.

I have been using the Rokit 8s for several years now, and really dig them.  I don't use them alone (final mix gets a run through with some smaller monitors while I am messings with EQ and levels), but they are my main monitors, and I do 95% of my work with them.

And they look good, too!  ;)

Nope... you have to use what you're personally familiar with.  Listen to what you listen to most, in the car, at work, while just chilling, whatever.  It will probably take a few rounds of mixes to get your balance back, but the same rules for figuring it out apply as always:
1. mix
2. output "master"
3. burn
4. travel and listed on every system you can get your hands on
5. back to step 1

A pair of Rokit 6 G2 just got delivered into my office.

I can't wait to hook up these babies.
