Honestly, with that much room, I'd probably just install X3 alongside the other installs on the same drive. Certainly all of the installs share the common folders, like VSTs and the like, and X3 finds and works with those just fine in my experience.
The only reason I wanted to get rid of the older installs was simply one of space - my 2-3 year old laptop only has a single 500 GB fixed disc in it. If I had as little as a 1 TB drive, I'd have left all installs alone.
That said, I uninstalled everything but X2 Producer (X1 Essential & X1 Studio). I then installed X3 Producer. It found all the prior project/data/plugin paths(folders), installed fine and has run properly since go. All of my plugins to date were found and work. All of my projects and audio/data files came through seamlessly as well. Now, granted, when Windows (Win7 Home x64) asked if I wanted to delete all the "shared but unused/no longer used files", I said "No To All" to keep them all (and there were a lot). Was that necessary? I do not know. But I wasn't chancing it.
