An early project by Matthias Juwan, one of the devs of Studio One.
Started in 1999 for his diploma thesis.

KRISTAL Audio Engine is a powerful multi-track recorder, audio sequencer and mixer - ideal for anyone wanting to get started with recording, mixing and mastering digital audio.

It is designed as a modular system. The main application provides a mixing console, while the audio sequencer, live audio input and so on are loaded as separate Plug-Ins.
 
KristalLabs Software Ltd., a privately held company co-founded by the lead developer of KRISTAL 1.0, Matthias Juwan, has taken over all rights on K2 source code. All the hard work invested in the K2 project over the past two years, will be used as foundation for developing new commercial-grade music production tools by KristalLabs

    This is the first DAW I ever had. It was really nice and I enjoyed using it. Used it along with Sonar Home Studio. You couldn't put in unlimited tracks and plug-ins so it made you think about what was the best to use to get the sound you wanted.
