Keepin Bad Company

This is another song that sprang from just the title line.  My friend Rob Williams helped with the concept, some of the words and the voice over speaking.

This is Blues with a bomp!   Enjoy - I hope.

Keepin' Bad Company
I was sittin' in a bar last Saturday Night
Wasn't lookin' for trouble. Wasn't lookin' for a fight
Somebody said somethin' ‘bout somebodies wife
That started a brawl and I ran for my life
But the cops arrived and they said: That's enough!l
They looked straight at me and slapped on the cuffs
The judge said son tell me how do you plead
I'm keepin' bad company

Me and a friend we took a drive uptown
We saw a long legged lady in a long white gown
My buddy walked up and put his hand on her knee
He said come up to my place and I’ll set you free
It’s a point of fact on which we're all agreed
I happen to have just what you need
She punched him in the face then she came after me
I’m keeping bad company
Bridge
Why do these things always happen to me
Take away this curse and set me free
I thought about it and now I finally see
It must be the company I keep
I went to a party with some friends of mine
We were drinkin’ heavy. We were havin’ a time
The party got rowdy and it got out of hand
The neighbors complained then they called the man
They hauled us to the station and put us in a pen
The cops looked at me and said: It’s you again!
They locked me up and threw away the key
I’m keepin’ bad company
I went to church on Sunday so I could repent
All of my sins and my youth misspent

We sang of forgiveness and cleansing my way
Then the preacher asked if I had somethin to say

I talked about my friends and how we was raised
And talked about the paths we walk these days

The preacher just stopped and said: You gotta leave
You're keepin bad company
[size=4 font="times new roman"][size=4 font="times new roman"]
I’m keepin’ bad company
I’m keepin’ bad company
I’m keepin’ bad company

Pleasant blues groove, not one to comment about lyrics as I am not prone to doing lyrics, the mix sounds fine here.

What was I saying just now about you being on a roll ? New Daryl tunes are appearing while I'm still listening to the last new one now !

Another one from the Daryl mould here - usual great tones and effortless style - you have your own distinct sound for sure. Would have liked to hear a proper live type drum ending / shimmering cymbals on this rather than then just stopping as it has that kind of feel to it for me if you know what I mean.

Doesn't really matter, but seeing as you posted the lyric it must be an older version or something as you sing it differently in some places.

Nice job Daryl!  I love the lead.  Lead voc could come down a little.  Agree with Paulo on the drums - they could use som brightening.  The lick is really nice - foot moving groove!  Love the ending riff goin' down.  Great chorus/lyrics.

Good job Daryl, and the Takamine sounds great ;-)

The drums feel burried in the mix. And would boost the hights a bit just overall.

This is the second time today that I heard some good blues at this site.  This has all the elements in a mix that I like:  presence, warmth, definition, performance.  I love your guitar work and voice on this tune.  Keep 'em coming.

You certainly have the chops Daryl. Mix is not to shabby either.

I hesitate to suggest this, because this is very much a personal thing, but I was not fond of the bass tone. I feel the song deserves a different kind of bass... something more slappy and punchy perhaps? But, like I said, its a matter of taste.

another great original tune... very cool Daryl... you really have such a distenctive style that's all your own... Great tone too...

"distenctive style that's all your own"
    is that redundant?

John. Thanks.  You can have an opinon on lyrics even if you don't write them.

Paulo - This song didn't exist in any form a few days ago.  I sang all the vocals in a single session, so I guess it's just me.  Glad you liked it.  I thought about a drum flourish at the end but I liked the way it sound as is, so I left it.  Thanks.

Rimshot - Thank you.  Another comment on the drums. To my really poor hearing they sound really good, I can't tell.  My tenitus is killing me.

Robby -  Actually the Campellone is not on this tune.  But I wouldn't have a problem with a Takamine if Tommy Emmanuel is Ok with it.  Thanks.  See my comments to Rimshot on drums.

    Lynn -  Thanks so much.

    Bdude - Ditto Thanks.

Janet - Thanks for listening, I hope the song was too bawdy.

Shad - Thanks.  Interesting comment as really loved the way this bass worked.  This was just my jazz bass DI with a little compression.

Frank - I always appreciate you kind words.  I am humbled by what you accomplish, so thank you very much.  I hear a lot of comments about my style.  That could either be a good thing or it means I'm starting fall into a rut.

There is a bit of a blues theme going on the songs forum at the moment.

Tight, well played.  Nicely mixed and mastered.

    Great job

    Daryl,
Very nice mix on this one.  Great blues groove and, as usual, great guitar tone and riffage!  I really like the ending on this, very cool.

Daryl - Yes being blessed with a cool name is just a coolness we are forced to bear.  Thanks.

Radio -  I like the siren idea.  Everytime I put sound effects in one of my songs, I get chastised for being tacky.  While they are probably right... I like it.  Thanks.

Neb -  Thanks.  A lot of my music certainly has an element of blues, and jazz, and rock, and country generally all in the same tune.  I rarely stray as far as this into a fairly pure blues genre... but it's fun.  Thank you.

Tony -   Thanks.  LIke I said early I was going to put in a drum flourish and some guitar riffage, but when I had done what's here, I too just liked it as was.

Bad ass song Daryl.  I like that you're using a deeper bottom end in your mixing.  Excellent bass line.  Great guitar tone - which one is this?

Nice bit of blues tunage. Everything sounds great and compliments on a good bass line! Heck, compliments on the vox as well.

    Very well done indeed!
