Keyboard Rythms

Hi my name is Jimmy and Im very new in Cakewalk, Midi and all that stuff, And hopefully you guys can help me, here is the problem: I have a Yamaha digital piano DGX 200 and I have been trying to record built up rythms from my keyboard to the computer and instead of drums all I get is piano sound, also when I try to record the rythm with the full chord gives me different sounds than the ones it sounds on the keyboard. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?, I will really appreciate your help.

Hi Jimmy, you want to make sure that your DGX 200 is properly defined. Under Options|Instruments you will see a list of definitions on the right hand side. I can't remember if Music Creator allows importing of definitions, but if so check here for the definitions http://home7.inet.tele.dk/js/musik/740pages/link7406.htm . Basically you are telling Music Creator what the parameters are for the specific keyboard that you are using, so for instance, when you change from patch to patch, Music Creator knows and displays the correct patches. I don't know about that particular keyboard, but I would guess that "General MIDI" should work as well.

    Two things to look at:

    1. If you are sending a midi signal to the computer from the keyboard, then to get drums both the keyboard output and MCs track must be set to channel 10

    2. second, the sounds that are in the ckeyboard, will not sound the same if you send the midi to MC then use Microsoft synth GS or Edirol or anyother softsynth as the output, I suggest sending the drum track to MC as an audio track, plug an RCA cord from the audio output of the keyboard to the input on the sound card of the computer and open/arm and hit record on an audio track.

    Hey Jimmie:
Robo's right about channel 10 for percussion, however you will need to use differnent patches to pull different instruments. - i.e. cymbal - snare - conga - etc.
That assumes your soundcard is capable or that you're using the edirol softsynth that comes with Music Creator.

Here is a link to basic digital recording including MIDI. Cakewalk put it together and is can help you understand some of the concepts.
