Khyber Pass

Edit: many have suggested tabla for this, so the following version reflects that change.
I still need to work on the violins and other stuff, but I like where it is going. Thanks all for the ideas and suggestions.

Well, I finally finished a song!! At least enough to post it.
After taking advantage of this Summers' deals on Sample Tank and Dimension Pro, I have been checking out many of my new patches. I stumbled across a hammered dulcimer patch in DimPro, and this piece was built around that.
As usual, it's a wee bit dark, but I had a blast putting this together.
Travel with me now to the far away Khyber Pass.
Hope you enjoy it.

Some fiddle and squeeze box, and you  have a real Gypsy song there. I may break up some of the hammering with a passage that is more like chords or triads that are arpeggiated? As opposed to the continuous drum roll? Just an idea. Oh and throw a tabla in there :-)

    Thanks for listening, guys.
Scotty, know any good fiddle players?
We seem to have a consensus developing.
Yes that dulcimer is tasty isn't it? Kudos to Cakewalk on that.
I've been enamored with the sound of a hammered dulcimer for years, and I think I hit maybe two notes on this sample and loved it.
Robby, I like the tabla idea.
Cliff, yeah not the usual fare. I'm having fun with it, but it's definitely new territory for me.

I was just tinkering with that patch in Dim Pro the other night myself. It is a great sounding patch.

What's that thing they use in Australia ... a didgeridoo? I could hear one of those in this too. But hey, not my song! It's great the way it is. Besides, where in the heck do ya get a sample of a didgeridoo? :)

A new song post from Bob...I'm getting a screenshot of this!

Nice idea Bob, you definitely got the Afghan vibe going there. I was dying to hear that violin start up a wild melody though, are you going to develop this a bit more?

    Hi Bob,

    This sounds great!

It could be cool 'developed' more, but it's pretty darn cool the way it is.

Thanks for the 'heads up' on the hammered dulcimer patch, too

I'm guessing one note plays an arpeggio on that dulcimer patch?  Either that, or that's some mad piano skills.  :-)  Anyway, this is really cool. And I agree with Larry...it's great to see you posting a new song!  :-)

Hey Bub, I think there is a didgeredoo in DimPro. Maybe not there, but I've seen it somewhere recently.
Not sure about the didgeree... but I have thought about the Delay Lama for this.
Joshua, glad you liked it. And you raise a good point. My monitors are still in storage in Colorado, so I am monitoring with headphones only. My 'phones emphasize the low end a bit, and I wonder if you all hear the same potency on the bass as I do here. I haven't listened to this in the van yet, and that is a pretty reliable test bed for sound.
LOL James. It's been a while, hasn't it?
I tend to agree that the violin wants to be heard more (as do others). I've scrapped several tracks that just weren't going where I was happy with them (hence the subtle nudge to Scotty). I'm going to work it more. I think there is plenty of room for more texture, without descending into mud.
Gary, yeah, I'm still working on. it. I'm happy with where it is, but there's room for more. That is a cool patch, eh? If you get a little manic on the keyboard, it rocks.

Janet, the patch plays tripalets. You still have to get a bit manic on the keys, but it captures that lovely bounce that is an intrinsic part of the sound of a hammered dulcimer.
And yes, it feels great to post a new song. It's been too long.

Well it sure sounds great.  I'm glad you were finally able to have some fun in the studio again. :-)

I'm not sure you saw my post in the CH awhile ago, but the friend that was loaning me the drum set, GAVE it to me!  :-)  So now I'll practice in earnest.  My biggest concern, though, is the giggles I'll probably hear when they see this grandma playing the drums.

Yes, I did see that. Very cool.
The way I see it, if they giggle at us grandparents playing the drums...hand them the sticks.
Then show them how it's done. Don't mention the 16,000 hours you practiced when nobody was around

    Hi Robert,

This is really well done.   I know nada about eastern music other than it's terribly haunting but unless it's taboo, i would boost that drum a tad.

I've been sick lately and this was just the ticket to get me in a new frame of mind.

    Thank you.

    Rick, thanks, and you're welcome.
You're so right about the haunting quality, and I think that's what draws me to this sort of music. I don't know much about it either, and this piece was somewhat of an adventure, but it seemed to follow a natural path.
    Funny how that works sometimes.
Steve, I got a kick out of James' post, too. I wasn't sure how this would be received, but it felt exceptionally good to post a new song.
Glad you liked it. I wonder where ol' stumpy is these days? Probably got kicked off the tour bus again. He was a pain in the patooty(c Beagle) but I kind of miss the little guy.
Pat, thanks. I see SHS4 in your sig. That's what started me down this crazy road, too. Gotta love it. My own system is pretty modest by today's standards, but she's still kickin'.

Hey Robert.... good song. Mix it with headphones if that's all you have.... I have mixed a few recently with my el-cheapo Yamaha cans..... the family doesn't appreciate the monitors and sub like I do...

Middle eastern music doesn't  develop like we expect it to in western music, but for the genre, I think it was pretty spot on (from a westerner's ears) because I think the middle eastern music tends to ramble until they get tired of playing...or dancing.... or both.  Much like african music... they just play ... sometimes for hours non-stop.

    Good job.... !

That's a nice one. Definitely caught the gypsy flavor very well. Though, strangely, I also agree about the diggeridoo. That would go well with it. Either that, or a grunty male chorus doing sort of low bass lines in the background.

And I'm starting to get really annoyed at Soundclick and their popup adds that start playing over the song.

Bobby, don't feel bad...you should have seen me working on it
No, it's not a surround mix, but depending on your speakers, I can see how it might translate that way.
    Glad you liked it.
Herb, yeah it's a different mindset for sure. I've tried many things with this, and stripped them back out because they just didn't feel right for it.
Tap, thanks. I'm a huge fan of lots of texture
On that note, Dean, I am seriously thinking of throwing the Lama into this mix. He has some low end male vox that I think will be a good fit.

I haven't had problems with the ads, but ever since I upgraded AVG to 2011, Firefox has virtually locked me out of Soundclick. It gets hung up checking something when I try to open songs.

I've always enjoyed Asian, Middle Eastern influenced music and the unique sounds of the instruments.   This is a good piece of work. I like how it builds.  I'd recommend bringing up the percussion as well...still keep it second layer but just a bit more to give the accents more emphasis.  I like the dulcimer. Cool sounding instrument.

You know I'm enamored with that eastern vibe 'stuff'!

This was kinda different for you Bob, and I'm glad you switched gears on this tune.

The sounds you used are nice samples too ( I know you still had to bang 'em out)

While listening to this, I wanted to hear some 'voices' scattered thru-out and some 'big, percussion hits, for dynamic and variation, but, that's just my creative thinking runnin' wild...

I think you've captured that vibe that matches the title perfectly and FWIW, my oldest son just got deployed 'around that region' 2 days ago.

Great job on this Bob and thrilled to hear you making music again!!

I think there's room for some bass in there.

I like this song very much.  I love my Dim Pro, too.  You could add any number of other elements, as has been suggested, but you could also leave this song along and write something new and different.  Keep play whatever you do.

Hey, Bob - this is very cool!  all of the crits from me have already been mentioned, so I won't bring them up again.  I do like this a lot!  very good stuff and glad you're posting again!
