I think that with technology, there can be a number of advantages over hard pages (IE. animation, etc) ... The pages don't rip and you can probably print out the ones you'd really like to keep. Seems like a great way to save trees!

Yeah but how much longer will you be able to enjoy kindle on the iPad?

http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2011/02/01/apple-bans-sony-ebooks-in-itunes-app-store-is-kindle-next/

Old story (by some eager NYT reporters) and quickly denied by Apple (and believe me, I am not an Apple fan).

Basically, apple wants a $$ cut of any app, book, or movie purchased.  The problem is with the agreements.  Apple wants all purchases generated from an iPad or iPhone app to go through their store. Sony's app allowed the user to purchase from withing their app...a no no and a breach of a prior agreement.

Apple has no issue with you logging into Amazon or Netflix to buy content, and then having them download the content to your device.  You just can't purchase from within that app on the device.

Oddly, you can use Safari to log into Amazon and buy a book, then let Amazon download the book.   Then go back to the Kindle app to read it.  But, if Amazon built the purchase functionally into the Kindle app, Apple would have a hissy and most likely ban the app.   As is is now, the iPad Kindle app has a button that takes you to the Amazon site via Safari.  So, they circumvent the issue.

Ah...... the corporate world.

"Seems like a great way to save trees!"

There are lots of great papers made out of plant fiber that is not sourced from trees.

A lot of paper pulp wood that is sourced from trees comes from renewable harvests on farms.

In Perry Florida the Buckeye Cellulose plant is using farm raised pine trees to produce a paper product that is sent to Germany where it is used as a raw material in the manufacture of Rayon fabric for clothing.

Bapu saved a tree once by standing in front of a crew of men with all there big heavy machines for cutting down trees.... they were ready to chop down a red wood -

bapu would have none of it

he stood his ground and didnt move out of the way until then men got tired and left
when bapu thought he won and HE left - the men came back and chopped down that tree

so I guess really he didnt ...save a tree

but

WOW - what an effort huh

The solution is to just buy the Kindle edition of The Real Book:

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Watch out... Or I'll start an essay about electronic screen fonts versus printed full serif that will make every one's eyes go blurry.

No!

Anything but that.

(perhaps the density of monitor stands vs. the quality of mixing choices maybe worse)

I've found that the density of the engineer is a much more significant factor.

Also of course if the end of the world comes,

You will want all your surival, how to, and pleasure books to be paperback.  Battery power for the e-books might be in short supply !

Fair enough Apple are not the super baddies i want them to be.

Its actually good to hear that its moving in the right direction.

I am just a bit distrustful of iTunes and the appstore, too much control over what we buy.

I remember a few years back the press were raving about how amazing it was that Madonna's comeback single went straight to no1

I did not find it that amazing given that she had been front and centre featured on the iTunes homepage for a month or so previously and people could hear a preview of the tune that whole time.

Sorry but i reckon if you put any band on the front page of iTunes they will sell pretty damn well.

Just feels like another way we are being force fed music, if the same starts to apply to books thats pretty scary.

Music and literature have historically been a vehicle to fight oppression and bring social issues to the wider public.

The more control that corporate bodies have of this the more worried i am.

Anyway as Bill Hicks would say, wrong meeting.
