Kindly show off your desks!
I'm given the chance to be able to have a desk handcrafted and customized, but my deadlines is 2 days from now and i still haven't got the desk design that i like. Can you guys post some photos of your desk and their dimentions? Or you can also post some photos of other people's desk or commercial desks available on stores so that i can base the design there. And should the height of the speaker placement area be around the height of my shoulders (Because once my speakers are put, they should be somewhere at the height of where my ear is, right?)

I built something similar in size to that Raxxess desk you linked to. Same configuration. About 7ft. wide with two racks below, a sliding keyboard shelf underneath the desk and a full width monitor shelf on top. One piece though, weighs a ton, but I'm not planning on moving it anywhere. (Although I did design it to come apart easily.) Cost me about $200.00 to build it. Turned out very nice. Got a table saw? Go for it. Took me a lot longer to design it than to actually build it. Building and finishing was the easy part.

It's insane what these folks ask for these desks online - $1300 for a similar base desk you can buy at Office Depot for about $200 and then two open front/back (read 4 pieces of plasterboard with cheap veneer) and 2 sets of $30 rack rails. I'd love to have something nicer, but the prices for this stuff is unreal.

How do rackmounts measure anyway? I haven't had one, but i'm sure i will do in the future and i might as well make a cabinet for them.

www.argosyconsole.com Loads of killer stuff there. And the cool thing is that if you find one you like and go to that specific page to check pricing.....and there's a link to a .pdf "documentation" which gives away quite a few measurements that should get you started.

My desk is literally a desk. A Boeing surplus metal desk I bought for $10. A rack sits to one side. However, I too plan to have a desk custom built when I get my new studio in Pangasinan, so I've been collecting designs as well. I prefer the ones that let you angle your rack-mounted gear - my current rack tilts back and it's much easier than getting on your hands and knees to tweak knobs like you'll have to do with that fancy Raxxess model. Here's the one whose photograph I currently have taped to the wall. I'll be very interested in seeing photos of your custom desk, Miguel.

That's a nice looking piece Bit! I think I might have mnetioned previously that I built myself a combined desk/rack unit - and couldn't get it up the bloody stairs!!! Had to saw the thing in half and reassemble it in situ. My wife learnt expletives she never even knew existed that day. [side-note - since then, I've hacked at it again as part of my "gear rationalisation process" it's now about a third of the original size, and looks a LOT better]

Thanks guys! I think i might stick with the Raxxess design, or if i see some. The Argosy tables are too high end and if i ask for one to be custom built in accordance with the Raxxess' design then it would cost me quite a hefty price (It wouldn't cost ME exactly, but i don't want to give the "donor" too much of an expense). How big are racks? Can anyone share the measurements?

I don't get the Raxxess' design. What's with the division in between the angles of the table? Is it foldable or something?

I was thinking to rest my speakers sideways so that both the subs and tweeters are on the same height, then slant them towards me. Is that a good idea? Or is it better to let it upright?

Racks are 19' internally - from the inside wall of the left one to the inside wall of the right one. For my desk, I ended up using a store-bought office desk. It was originally designed to fit into a corner, but I use it on a 45 degree angle so that the "corner" points straight ahead. Very sturdy construction plus lots of storage. My PC fits in a cabinet in the base (I cut the back out for ventilation and cable access) and there is room on the desk surface for a small 4 space rack that holds a power conditioner, mic pre, and Presonus Central Station. Altogether the cost was about $375. If I can find a picture online I'll post a link.

I'll soon also be undertaking a custom desk with my buddy who built my custom guitar - some of you may have seen that thread. My number one goal is to minimize the horizontal surfaces which tend to catch and build-up an amazing amount of: unlabeled cd's, cd cases, paper clips, loose change, guitar picks, guitar strings, guitar string wrappers, velcro strips, electrical tape, solder, barrel jacks, etc. If it's got a flat/horizontal surface, it collects crap, and I'm on a mission to do away with everything horizontal in my place....exept for the floor and the top side of my monitors.

For those that decide to build a rack for standard 19" rack gear, build it 19 - 1/8" wide. 19" may be a little tight for some gear. I've built quite a few over the years. The very first one I built years ago was 19". No wiggle room.

And be careful of rack rails....not all of them are identical. You're best off having those in your posession so that they can be factored into the size as well.....

The very first one I built years ago was 19". No wiggle room. That's good advice. I have a samson s-patch plus which is a great piece of gear. However it can be quite tight in the lower parts of my 22 space rack and can require a dunt now and again to get its rack ear holes to match up with the cage nuts. However, this could be due to squint rack rails. I haven't got a spirit level handy to check this for certain. Regardless, a 'little' room for manouvre wouldn't hurt I guess. Zipps

Why do some people (They may or may not include you guys) like their screens placed quite high? Isn't that fatiguing and bad for the neck if you work hours while looking up?

Video displays, IMO, should be placed low, like the ones TV newscasters have built in to their desks. This not only lets you see over them into the window, but more importantly reduces their interference with your speakers. I suspect when you see them up high that's mainly out of convenience - there just wasn't anyplace else to put them.

I finally finished the layout and measurements, please wish me luck on this desk! (I agree with your opinion Dave, i strongly do. But if you say it because of space issues, why are some studio tables built with an elevated, above eye-level monitor placement platforms?)
