Kingston 'motorboating' when switching between 2 open projects.
Hi folks. Has anyone else noticed that sometimes when switching between two open projects in Kingston, upon pressing play it will just make a 'motorboat' sound, and you must stop and restart play to have it play as it should? I do comparisons all of the time to make sure that all of my live projects are at similar volumes and have only noticed this behavior since the last update, on two separate systems wth different audio interfaces. By no means a show stopper - just a tad annoying at 120db :) Could well be user erorr - most things are:) If anyone one knows of a setting that could cause this I would live to hear from you. Regards, Bruce.

One way I do this is to bounce all projects to waves. Then import them into a master project. Then solo each to compare. I also line songs up and swap order for a CD this way too. Max
"Edited spelling" New Tag line so I won't have to keep typing this. I may or may not have edited this yet, but I probably need to. < Message edited by MArwood -- 3/02/2525 3:45:05 AM >

Thanks for the response Max. I have lighting and other control data so I need to keep the projects separate - just switch between them for comparison.

Jeeze. It never occurred to me that you would be able to switch between two open projects on the fly without a problem.

Are you running two instances of SONAR, or two projects within one instance?

One instance of Sonar Craig - two projects open containing audio and midi tracks only (no soft synths), I play one project and stop it, then switch to the other project and play it. I also have two projects open when programming lights - one contains only pre programmed chase paterns as midi clips. The noise happens upon starting playback after switching projects just to copy a clip accross as well. It seems that simply making another project active without even starting playback, then switching back to the original project and playing it is enough to trigger the behaviour. Yes slarta - you can certainly have multiple projects open and switch between them. I have done this for many years. If by 'on the fly' you mean whilst the project is actually playing, you probably could expect some issues.

Now that I would expect to work. I thought you were saying you could switch projects without stopping the transport. Even in the case you describe, I expect there is going to be some housekeeping that needs to be done between closing one project and opening the other which is going to require some time. That is probably the source of the problem. I don't know if Sonar has to quit and then re-acquire the audio interface in that case, but stuttering is sometimes a problem with competition for the audio card.

That would seem to be the case Slarta. I have been eiting this way for some time and was just curious that the problem only manifest in the recent updates.

I'd like to try and reproduce this. Can you pare down your projects and submit both of them? Also specify your audio configuration setup - driver config, how many inputs outputs selected, whether dynamic arming is enabled etc. Are you sure this is new to the last update? You can verify by rolling back and comparing the behavior.

Hi Noel. I noticed in Jamaica Plain that when I switched between projects I would get an 'audio engine has stopped' notification, even though neither was playing. I rolled back to Ipswich to avoid this. The noise started with the Kingston update (the avantages of which far outweigh the slight annoyance of this problem!) It happens with all projects on two separate systems. I will test two projects with my 2 interfaces (RME Fireface and Behringer x32) and confirm it happens on both. If it does I will then roll back to make sure it doesn't happen with previous versions then send you the projects and details. Regards, Bruce.
