Kjaerhus Classic Limiter need dither??
Hiya! I own S6 PE, and I just downloaded all of the free VST's from Kjaerhus. They all are VERY nice as free plugins, seriously. I read on the website that you should use a dither plugin after the limiter. Is this needed in Sonar 6?

They probably said this assuming that after applying limiter, which is done after all other processing, your next step would be to dither to 16/44.1 for CD burning. I believe Sonar has a dither option that is turned on by default.

It depends what bit-depth and sample rate your music's in. If your recording in 16/44, you won't need to dither...

I record at 24/44. I thought when you exported in Sonar it dithered automatically depending on the settings you choose.

Yes, I believe it does by default.

you should only dither at the final mixdown stage to creat a cd, and you should only do it one time... CJ

I agree with the above-comment. Basically, anytime you need to reduce the bit-depth you'll need to dither - be it from 32 bits to 24, or 24 to 16...

Indeed, that was my understanding. I would only use the limiter at the end of my project if I wasn't professionally mastering it. I thought Sonar would dither for me when exporting the audio, which I was correct in thinking apparently. Thanks everyone!

ORIGINAL: Sonic the Hedgehog I agree with the above-comment. Basically, anytime you need to reduce the bit-depth you'll need to dither - be it from 32 bits to 24, or 24 to 16... And as a best practice, try not to reduce bit depth in a chain like: 32 bit ->dither->24 bit->dither->16 bit Always try to do bit reduction from the highest quality data whenever possible. Ex: 32 bit ->dither-> 24 bit 32 bit ->dither-> 16 bit

I hate to open up a firestorm, but any time you combine tracks, you are truncating and effectively reducing bit depth. This is true almost any time you process audio at all. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to dither all the time, and in practice it's usually going to be fine to only apply dither at the last stage where you truncate from high bit depth (32 or 64) to format bit depth. But it's a little imprecise to say that's the only occaision where dither could ever make an improvement. There are also definitely circumstances where one could extend dynamic range and decrease truncation distortion even while working entirely with 16-bit files. Of course, this may all be splitting hairs, but so is talking about dither, kind of. Cheers.
