Kontakt 4 owners - please test this!

Hi there, coming out of this thread, I've been experiencing various problems with Kontakt 4.1 and Sonar (and VE Pro, incidentally).  It seems most people have stable systems, so I'm trying to track down if this following bizarre memory behaviour is just me or if everyone has it.  I'd be so, so grateful if someone could try the following, preferably on a 32 bit system.

1.  Start from a clean boot.  Launch Sonar, open a blank project with Kontakt 4.1 installed.  (uses 217mb on my system)

2.  From K4's core library, open the String Ensemble in the orchestral folder (Kontakt reports the patch is 79mb).

3.  Now open two more identical instruments, so you now have 3 string ensembles.  These obviously share samples, but there is a small increase in memory for having the additional instruments.  Total memory now used by Sonar is 388mb.

4.  Save the project, close, then reopen.

5.  Task Manager now reports memory useage of 528mb - an increase of about 140mb.

After this, I've often found the system is especially grumpy and may hang on loading a new instrument.

If anyone has 5 minutes to spare to try this and report back the findings on their memory usage, I'd be eternally grateful.  Please post the rough system specs too.  Mine are:

Q6600, 4GB RAM, XP 32 bit, Sonar 8.5.2

Many thanks.

is it the memory displayed in Task Managers Processes tab you are getting these numbers from?

    If so,

Sonar 8.5.3 opens new session using 84MB.
Loading 1 string ensemble in Kontakt, jumps to 294mb
    3 ensembles - 344mb

close and reopen - 451 MB ( increase of ~107MB)

New vsti's load normally, no lag or hang.

    955 Phenom, 4GB RAM, W7 64 bit, SP 8.5.3

What you are reporting is about half a gigabyte out 3 to 4 or so total. That should not be a problem or cause any slowdown.

I run 8 gb and Vista 64 so I wouldn't see much difference anyway.

Perfectprint - thank you so much for your test.  I've replicated it also on the laptop, and it looks like there is a consistent fault here.  I've had a feeling something was wrong for months, but never managed to nail it down before.

John - actually in my case this fault is an enormous deal.  What prompted these tests was attempting to build a template with Broadway Big Band.  The template uses several duplicate legato instruments for building sections, which should be very efficient.  Having built a version which used about 1gb, I was unable to ever reload it, cos the reloaded version maxed out at 2gb and crashed the system (don't forget in 32 bit land, any one process that exceeds 2gb will fall over, even with the 3gb switch enabled).  I'm hoping that whatever this memory bug is. is related to the hanging-on-loading issues I'm getting (my templates pretty much all use instruments that share samples, where I think the core issue lies here), so I'm hoping that fixing this bug will lead to permanent improvements.

Good news - NI agree with the bug, they are working on a fix.
