Kontakt 5 sadness opening existing project after clean install of Win 8
Kind of a bummer - I had some X2 projects created prior to my doing a clean install to Win 8, and when I opened them, the projects load the various soft synths into the rack, and for things like Dim Pro and such the proper presets are loaded, but for Kontakt 5 virtually NONE of the instruments from my multi rack are loaded, and none of the output channel routings are preserved either. So, for each of these type of projects, even though all of the software is the same, and all of the projects are the same, I have to manually go back and figure out midi channels and routings and of course the loading of the instruments and the presets. Not insurmountable by any means, just kind of a drag. Not sure if that is a Kontakt 5 thing or an X2 thing. Bob Bone

This is why I'm too afraid to upgrade. You just never know what kind of horrors await you because of some configuration or settings or other that got annihilated during the process, usually because you didn't save everything you should have.

That is always a concern. I did as much research as I could reasonably do, and decided to upgrade to Win 8. My Sonar was already at X2, so I wasn't expecting anything whatsoever there. I believe this is really connected to my reinstall of Kontakt and not to Sonar getting reinstalled. There would have been more thread postings were that the case. And, as I said, I already know which midi channels go to what, and which outputs to set up the K5 routings for, from the tracks that are all still there. I just have to redo that for each project where I have multiple instruments loaded into one instance of K5. Not the end of the world. Everything else is working just fine. Bob Bone

Forgot to add that the Kontakt re-install was also not an upgrade. I had to install Komplete 8 Ultimate all over again due to the clean install I did on going to Windows 8. It did give me an option to keep apps and file, but I never trusted the OS upgrade route - always have done clean installs. So, twas a surprise - will have all of the project instances of Kontakt's multi-racks fixed up sometime today. Bob Bone

My trouble is I've never really been sure of where all the settings for plugs and instruments are kept. I'm not even sure about where per-project plugin settings are stored. And I have a tendency to download plugs, install them, and keep the install apps in my downloads folder. I'd have to go through all of the crap in my download folder and figure out what I need to keep and what I can throw away. I also worry about reinstalling Komplete Ultimate, because I have heard of people having problems with the drive it comes on. I figured I was lucky that worked the first time! I wish software manufacturers would include instructions on how to move their products to a new computer!

I actually had ZERO trouble with the complete re-installation of Komplete 8 Ultimate. I have another program that keeps individual settings from inserted plugs all nicely saved within each snapshot created, so I wasn't worried about Sonar having any issue with that. If there were settings problems, they would also occur just going from one project to the next, or even just re-opening the same project. So again I was not worried there. Perhaps I should have explicitly saved the multi-rack within Kontakt after building it in Sonar, as it is probably more complicated as settings and such than Sonar was designed for. It's one thing to save a plus preset and volume, but a far different creature indeed to expect it to save internal product-specific functions and routings and such. I am just now sitting down to rebuild the projects containing multi-rack instances of Kontakt, and this time, I will save each as it is built. I expect this will protect me in the future. Should have thought of it earlier, but since Sonar was happily loading everything up for me I didn't expect any trouble. I suppose this means it is the re-install of Kontakt that somehow interfered with Sonar's ability to load the prior information - perhaps because of different Registry identifiers and such. Even so, in the future I should only have to reload each project-specific multi-rack, rather than having to rebuild each whole rack. Bob Bone

What is the program you use to save settings from plugs? I really need to sit down and get the whole multi-outs up and running in Kontakt. The GUI is much more confusing than it is in Battery though. You can set up all of those stereo and mono outs and save them as default though, right?

I was referring to a product I use for gigging, called Forte - from Brainspawn. It is a VST host wrapper program that is phenomenal at building soft synth racks, then allowing layering of any combination of sounds from any number of the loaded synths, then lets you save a snapshot (preset) for any such combination. When you save the snapshot, it captures all of the settings for each sound/preset from each loaded synth, for instant recall during live performance. You can even tell it only to reload samples if the instrument has changed, so that for Kontakt 5, if I have a piano loaded and one preset uses it and the next does not, but the one after does again, it will not have to reload any samples, so the preset changes are instant. FURTHER, any modules not used for any given preset (muted) are swapped out of memory, so there is no huge CPU load even with 15-20 synths in a rack. For Kontakt, there have been other threads about folks building and saving all kinds of output routings, but I just load up the instruments into a multi rack and then use the output section's batch function to clear all the output channels and recreate them as 1 per loaded instrument. I believe if I then save my multi rack, I can always just load it again if I have to do a future install of Kontakt again. I will look for one of the other threads - within the last couple of months or so, just have to find it. I will post again if I locate it, Bob Bone
