Kontakt, Sonar, and Steven Slate Drums
Hi there, Does anyone know how to set up Kontakt within Sonar so that each piece of the steven slate drum (3.5 platinum) kit is assigned to a separate track? There was a Sonar masterclass video a while back that did that with session drummer and the step sequencer, so I know it's possible. I know it can't be that hard, but for the life of me... I'm stuck. I'd appreciate any help. thanks, Ryan

It can be done. I use that very setup. Steven Slate drums to 16 or 18 tracks. I think what you are needing to setup is in Kontakt. In the lower right hand of your synth screen, make sure you can see the mixer assignments. Select the channel assignments to make changes. Mine seems to default to channels 1/2 and all drum sounds come out of my "kick" channel. Easily changed and assigned.

Ok Ryan this is going to be a bit jumbled because I'm on my iPad. Ok 1st thing, load Kontakt vst, just Kontakt and NOT one of the other options like 16 out or 8 out. When the dialogue come up, choose all stereo outputs. Kontakt will now load 40 and more tracks. Ignore that for now. Go to the 1st track and re name kick, second snare, 3rd toms....etc until you cover all the instruments you want. Next delete all the extra Kontakt tracks that you don't want. Ok, open Kontakt load a slte kit...... Make sure the mixer is showing then klick on config button, for the kick drum, you will see two outputs, select 1 for the first then 2 for the second from the drop down that appears when you click. Don't close this panel just use the navigate buttons to move to the snare select outputs 3 and 4, navigate to toms, select 4 and 5.... Etc, you get the idea. Now depending on the version of Kontakt you are using, click either make default or save as your own configuration. If you've followed these steps you should be good to go. It's a bit if a PITA but once done, you won't forget and you'll get faster. Personally as I use this for all my projects I have this saved in the normal template any way. You could also save as a track tempate...... I hope this helps????

The only thing I can't seem to figure out is how to choose all stereo outs within Kontakt. From there I gather that Kontakt creates a bunch of tracks within Sonar. After I get past that step I think I'll be ok. Could you be a bit more specific about the stereo output part? Thanks for the help. Ryan

Yep, here we go. Ok, hit "B" for browser, then go to Synth > add Synth > choose Kontakt (which ever version you have - I'm on 4.2 I think), dont choose Kontakt 16 out or 8 out!!!! when you choose Kontakt a dialogue box opens giving you lots of options as tick boxes, I tick Midi source, Synth track folder and All synth outputs stereo. from there Kontakt will open with 40+ tracks from there follow my previous instruction..... BUT dont delete the Midi track that opens with the other ones, you will need that :-) HTH

or, load kontakt 16, load a multi, go to config at the bottom of each mixer channel and change it for each drum...

Will the audio tracks be "editable"?

Hey Stinga It's official, it's working perfectly. Thanks again for all the help. I owe you one. rocoman: to answer your question- this method actually creates a series of midi tracks. You can load fx into each track as you normally would, which is why I wanted to try this in the first place. The Px-64 percussion strip is very useful on individual drum sounds. As for editing, you can edit to your hearts content using the prv on the instrument track. Cheers all, Ryan

So Here's another question(s).... Is there a way to do this using the Kontakt 16 or 8 out? What is the Kontakt 16 and 8 out useful for? Why would you use it? Ryan

In short Ryan I don't know, the method I use .... And now you .... Works. The question of the 16 out version of Kontakt was the subject of much discussion over on the Slate forum, it was some time ago now and it was decided then that the way I just gave you was the best as for some reason the 8 and 16 out versions were flakey....... Try and see, if it works then, that's even quicker than the way above, alternatively just now save into your template and you are always good to go without all the setup hassles each time..... Really glad you got it working!!!!

STinGA (or anyone else) Is this setup possible only with the Steven Slate Drum add-on, or can I possibly apply this set-up with a regular drum kit from say the "Band" collection in Kontakt 4? (also, I can't seem to find the "Mixer" as you desribed. Did you mean the "Output Section"?) Unfortunately, I don't own the Steven Slate Drum add-on, but I'd really like to take advantage of this type of configuration withiin Kontakt 4 if possible. I can configure Session Drummer 3 like this and it works well, but the drums sounds are not quite as extensive as the ones that can be found in the Kontakt Library. Anyway, If there's a way to do this with the regular drum kits found in the Kontakt4 library could you explain for me, please? Thanks, Harpo

You can do similar routing for any "Multi", in other words, you can configure each instument in a Multi to have its own output. Each drum or cymbal in the Slate kits is a separate instrument. If the kit is a single instrument, I don't think you can do the same routing thing. Regarding the "Mixer", yes it is the Output, where you make the routing assignments Simon

Hi ryannadon, I have a Kontakt track template set up with multiple outs for each of Steven Slates drum types. Kick, Snare etc all separated in to separate outputs. If you'd like it PM me with your email address and I'll send it to you. It uses the 16 out mode of Kontakt (8 stereo outs). It was made in 8.5 but I assume it will work in X1.
