Korg D1600 As Control Surface?

Hi -

Does anyone know if there's a way to use a Korg D1600 recorder as a control surface? It has a midi connector but it can't possibly be that simple - I'm usually not that lucky. It would sure be great since the Korg gets very little use as a recorder since Sonar 7 has been up and running.

All help and 'instructions' would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
David

    Hi David,
Actually it is pretty easy to get one of those Korg units to work as a control surface. I have a Korg D1200mkII that I used as a control surface for a couple of years. It will respond to the Generic Control Surface plugin quite readily, and your faders and transport controls will activate accordingly. I also used mine for insert effects since my Echo Layla will accept insert effects on the first two inputs. Honestly I never tried it with ACT. I bet it would work even better with ACT than it does with the Generic Control Surface plugin. Still I was able to control pan, fade, eq, play, rewind, ff, and pause, and there were a couple of rotary encoders (on the D1200 mkII there are three rotary encoders that select effect functions) that I assigned to various functions depending upon the template.

Now that I have a Mackie MCU, Novation Remote SL and Edirol M-16DX I really don't have a need for a fourth control surface (I also have a Korg padKontrol that can be used as a control surface but I don't use it that way). The Korg was good at a few simple functions and if that is all you need then you won't be dissappointed. Don't expect it to do a good job controlling plugin automation unless you are willing to spend a bit of time assigning controls and keeping track of your assignments on a per project basis.

That's good news. Any suggestions on how I go about setting it all up?

I started writing down the instructions and then I remembered that Adam Burch wrote (or at least posted a link to) some excellent instructions that applies here. Here's the link:

    ACT Setup Link

    That should get you going.

    Paul -

Thanks, the document looks great. One thing I still need to figure out is how do I "tell" my D1600 that it's going to be a control surface. It can't be as simple as just plugging in a midi cable ... but I'm sure going to try it.

    Thanks again,

Well it's not quite as simple as just plugging in a cable (or two in this case-you need bi-directional communication for controller functions), but as long as your D1600 appears on the list of MIDI devices, and you tell Sonar which port on your midi interface is the input, and which is the output, then you can pick the Korg D1600 from a list of devices that can be configured as a control surface in the Options/Controllers Surface dialog box. All this is explained in the pdf file in the link, but if you run into any problems let us know and we can steer you in the right direction.
