Korg Nanokey and Music Creator 4

Hello,

New member here joining the forum to seek help with a few gifts I got my 16 yr. old son for Christmas a few days ago. He currently has a Yamaha keyboard with internal speakers that he plays everyday like clockwork. Trying to be the thoughtful dad, I decided to get him a Korg Nano keyboard and Cakewalk Music Creator 4 software to try and help him evolve a bit in his musical quest. The Korg Nano connects via a USB 2.0 port and I installed the driver properly (I say this because it has no problem driving the M1 Korg Legacy software that I downloaded from the Korg website.) After installing the calkwalk Music Creator 4 software , it seems that I can't get it running right. I can't get them to "talk" to each other! I keep getting this message:

"There are no audio devices for the current driver model on your system. Please go to Options|Audio and choose a different driver model"

When I go under "Options" and then click on "MIDI devices" it says the input device is the "nanoKEY 1 KEYBOARD" and the output device is the "nanoKEY1 CTRL".

When I go under "Options"and then click on "Audio options" and then "Drivers" it gives the input driver choices of -Line in at front panel, Line in and rear panel, Mic in at rear panel, and Realtek HD Audio Stereo input - And gives the output driver choices of Realtek HD Audio rear out (multiple times) and Realtek HDA SPDIF out ....neither the input nor output drivers have any checks by the options (and random selections don't seem to help).

We are using a HP Pavilion a6207c PC with a AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual core processor running at 4400+ with a 400GB hard drive and a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE Graphics Card - When I check the soundcard it says its a Realtek High Definition Audio, and I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium

Please keep in mind that I have no issues running (or hearing via the Bose speakers) the M1 LE or MP3's or CD's.... I tried to include all the information that I could think of, but if more is needed please ask. Thanks in advance for any and all help - I'm really at a loss with this stuff

Ok, first since you're using the onboard soundcard and apparently it doesn't like WDM driver mode (default), you need to change to MME driver mode:
    OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = MME
    close MC
    restart MC
    let the wave profiler run

that should stop the message about "no audio devices..."

you should select the nanoKEY 1 KEYBOARD as the primary MIDI INPUT in the MIDI DEVICES and move it to the top. as far as output, however, there are some choices you'll need to make in order to determine which direction you want to go. if you want the actual sounds from the keyboard to be recorded, then you have to record it using AUDIO. you'll need a cable and some adapters to run from the keyboard's AUDIO OUTPUT and plug that into the SOUNDCARD INPUT. you can still record MIDI data from the keyboard, then set the OUTPUT of the MIDI track to the nanoKEY and then arm an audio track and record the input from the keyboard.

however, your other choice is to use softsynths. softsynths are not the same sounds as the actual keyboard, but are synthesizers in software. do tutorial #8 in the help files to learn how to use softsynths.

warning: you'll get LATENCY when you start to use the keyboard with softsynths. latency is the delay you hear between the time you press a key on the keyboard and the time you hear the softsynth sound from the computer. the only way to really resolve that is to get a "RECORDING" soundcard with good drivers. you can check my website for more info on soundcard recommendations.

good luck and ask questions if you don't understand something!

Follow Beag's directions carefully, you have to think signal flow. When to warning says "go to options/Audio, don't go to options Midi devices. Remeber it was asking for audio devices.

Once you get it right it will be really nice for him. Just let us know in detail what is not working.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

output device is the "nanoKEY1 CTRL".

Since the Nano is a controller, selecting this output will produce no sound, because the controller has no MIDI synthesizer in it.
Use software synthesizers or the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth (not the best choice, but it works) for MIDI.

Gwis2..... welcome to the MC forum.

What a great thing to do..... buy more music stuff for your son.... congrats!!!

Now lets see if we can get you hooked up and recording. THe computer you have has a Realtec sound card.....we'll come back to that in a minute. For now.... follow the advice given so far to try & get the Realtec working. It's currently probably a driver issue.

Eventually, you will want to upgrade from the computer's Realtec to a dedicated combo Audio/Midi interface. Check Beagle's web site for a nice listing of soundcards. Another way to select one is to check the signatures of the older time users. We post the interfaces that we use, because they work. Expect to pay between $100 to $250 to get a decent interface. You need the right tools to do the job. Don't be afraid to buy a good interface. It's the heart of the recording rig. It will make the recording process so much easier and smoother.....a "Cakewalk" as it claims.

Get a good interface (external soundcard)...and use the info at my website to help you with the midi stuff.

OK...After trying what was reccomended by the kind people in this forum, I finally got things to work! Now my son is actually getting a feel for the software while using his Nano - he may have to actually READ something (Ahem) to learn how to make the Music Creator 4 do what he wants...but I think I did my part (with the help of you guys) and gave him the tools. Many thanks to all who chimed in, and please don't be surprised if I ask another seemingly simple question about the program. Thanks again...

..."he may have to actually READ something (Ahem)"...

Isn't that considered child abuse these days? Are you permitted to force one of your children to read or research something on their own? You had better check your local laws over that one.
    (Hope he ain't reading this)
And don't be surprised if something that would seem simple trips you up, sometimes the easiest thing throws you a curve, and when you ask the question, some here will say "that never happened to me", others will claim it happens all the time. This program is very good for the money, a very powerful tool, but there are times you just want to....well, I think I may have said too much.
