I thought it was funny when they called me from "Microsoft" and said I had a problem with my computer. Which at that time happened to be a Mac and not even mine...

ProjectM I thought it was funny when they called me from "Microsoft" and said I had a problem with my computer. Which at that time happened to be a Mac and not even mine... Thats them hackers that got mine. I dont evewn know how they got my cell number but they did and they already took control of my computer. Stupid McAfee died on me. Anyway somehow they trashed my HDD and Video Card and really screwed up my BIOS. I caught on real quick thank god but played them along The call originated out of Las Vegas and they stated they were with Microsoft Support Center, that my Windows license had been corrupted and I would need to buy a new license. Then it got real fun, he would get real defensive and insistant on WHY I should buy this new license for Windows from them LOL. Thank goodness I just replaced the HDDs and there absolutely NOTHING on the system yet. Being I just replaced both the HDDs and Video card, I clean install of WINDOWS and Security Essentials and Malwarebytes got rid of all the crap they did to it. Since Ive gotten rid of my cell phone and dont even own a clock-Oh the joys of not needing a thing as far as those two are concerned Id really hate to see some elderly lady get caught by something like that. Its everywhere and people fall for it.

I think the big thing for them is just to get a phone number to start with, and then they start playing there games.

Wow! You had a big encounter with these guys then! I just played stupid when they rang me. He said something was wrong and I pretended to be surprised since everything seemed fine on my end. Nothing was wrong either, not on that Mac nor on my own Windows machines. I think he just picked out my number randomly. He "needed" me to click on something and I attempted to follow his instructions, never telling him I was on a Mac as if I didn't know the difference. He started to get a little frustrated after a while and then I started to complain about what a piece of crap software this Windows thingy was. Eventually he just hung up. I suppose he realized the scam started costing him money ;)

There are people who bait scammers for a hobby. There's a forum somewhere in which they recount their experiences. The most famous one is the "Anus Laptops" scambait - it's extremely long and involved but worth reading if you do a search for it. Very funny stuff.
