LOOK AT *ME* FFS!

You probably know that Strammy likes his cooking.

I also like my TV cooking programmes.

But why on earth do the producers and directors of these type of 'reality' shows (many other genres are guilty too) feel the need to make it appear that the presenter is talking to some third party who isn't there?

They are obviously addressing me - the viewer.  The fictional third person they are looking at never speaks or reacts (obviously) so why is this done?

These examples show what I'm whinging about - I've snapped these prime examples when the presenters are in full flow monologue, but who are they addressing?

Ramsay, Dahl etc - FFS LOOK AT ME you ignorant twats

(rant over)

Edit: Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Now that you mention it I've noticed that quite a bit too lately.

Of course it's Crossroads by another name but the solo at 1:20 is one of my favourites from GM.

Apparently Moore and Baker hated each other so it was one album only...

I vaguely remember the project James, a good mate of mine was a big Cream fan and I remember him telling me all about it knowing I liked Gary Moore's stuff.  I never got around to checking it out though - but that clip is excellent mate, Moore doing what he does best.

I just ordered the (remastered) album you mention (Around The Next Dream) from Amazon -  got to be a bargain at £4.99

Thanks for the heads up on that James

I certainly do Pedro - I like his blues, rock and metal; as well as his contribution to Thin Lizzy and his collaborations with (the incomparable) Phil Lynott

Reason why I asked was because Garry Moore has my favorite rock song solo of all time. In his first album there is a cut named "Spirit" that still is for my ears the craziest guitar solo I have ever heard. And some of your playing, for some reason reminded me of his stuff. And of course, I happen to like Nuclear Attack and that other big rocker on Greg Lake's first solo album.

I have the LP. If you want to hear it let me know ... and love the side 2 in its entirety and how it goes from that crazy solo to the last song ... awesome. Totally awesome!

They're all at it in this (otherwise excellent) BBC two-part documentary Wild Burma - Nature's Lost Kingdom...

What seems so ridiculous in the first three incidences is that they're all driving and being filmed by a camera in the other front seat - whoever they are directing their blurb to would have to actually be on the bonnet (hood)

The thing that about many cooking shows that sometimes annoys me and other times entertains me is what I call the "orgasm face".  That's when the presenter tastes the dish that he or she just made.  Some are better at looking sincere than others.  Some are funny or annoying when the go ecstatically over the top to show how great the meal tastes!

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

I think the idea is that they want to give the impression that the presenter is being "interviewed" by someone just off camera. They've probably done focus groups where people expressed a slight feeling of unease when they were being directly addressed. This is the 2010's, nobody wants to make eye contact

Ha ha- it is a weird convention I agree steve!

I watched one episode of the Ramsey American ones with the morbidly obese judge with cool glasses. This judge didn't really get it and had to deliver the news to one of the contestants whether they woould be "advancing" to the next stage or whatever.

It went something like:  "I'm really very sorry to have to tell you this.........(very, very long dramatic pause)....................., but............"YOU'RE THROUGH TO THE NEXT ROUND!!!!!"

Tragic.

I totally agree Steve. Back in the old days it was a serious no no. It is just some stupid fad that a lot of idiot directors are getting into because they think it looks cool. In fact it does not and it looks stupid. One day they will all realise it. It will pass.

Bit like all the hand held camera crap on NYPD Blue. That was shocking. At least they have gotten out of that now.

That crossed my mind Sharke, but that's what made those (top three) examples of the Burma documentary so patently ridiculous. There couldn't possibly be anybody where they are being told to look.

It just makes me feel slightly uneasy/uncomfortable in some subconscious way.
