LP-64 Multiband performance issues

Is anybody able to check out the below steps?

The workaround for me is to increase the sound card ASIO buffer size by a multiple of 4 than what you usually have, funny considering other plugins such as Native Instruments and Melodyne work just fine.

STEPS...

Create a new project using the normal template.
Insert addictive drums soft synth (Just select simple instrument track as an insert soft synth option).
Record the most basic kick pattern, quantise it 1/4 and loop it so it goes on for 3+ minutes. You don't want anything complicated.
You can now play a 3 minute drum loop and each beat is exactly the same all the way.
Go to the master channel FX BIN.
Add LP 64 multiband.
Play!

EXPECTED
Same as you played it last time expect with LP's signal processing.

ACTUAL
Some beats get dropped intermittently. Looking at the meter in the addictive drums track, addictive drums appears to be failing to play a beat or so under these conditions.

NOTE
Turn it off and the behaviour stops, however you need to press stop and play on the transport to reset.
Note this is a high spec machine and CPU is not under strain. Buffer settings are high.
I am using a Focusrite Saffire Pro 64, I never get issues otherwise.

WORKAROUND
Increase your ASIO buffer size by (say) 4 times what it is now.

Couple of other things I noticed, I can reproduce with Session Drummer as well with the same beat.
And if you play both Addictive drums and Session drummer tracks at the same time it's all over the place...
And if you are unable to reproduce after 3 mins of playing, turn off and on the LP-64 in the FX bin a few times whilst playing. Once you start reproducing it the behaviour becomes a little more consistent.

And if I was turning off the LP-64 off and on I still could reproduce it even with 4x existing latency settings (although not as often)...

Cheers...

Ah now I know why you were searching for a new multi-band.

Alex, I'm wondering if perhaps you may have the old MBL still showing in your library? Noel made a mention of fixing all the issues we were experiencing with Cake 64 (LP, Eq etc) plugs. Does yours show as version 19.0.0.306?

I'm wondering if you have the right one. I'll try your recipe above and get back to you with my results. I'm working tonight but may be able to try it tomorrow.

When you did your x3 installation did you deselect installing Cakewalk plugins you had?
I ask because this often results in some problems. Each new version of Sonar, plugins are recompiled with often some very minor undocumented tweaks. You can see how that can cause issues. Just a thought.

Hi Danny

Thanks for responding. Yes LP64_Multiband_64.dll is on 19.0.0.306, and only one copy on my hard drive so this is definitely what I'm using. If anybody has a later version please let me know!

Thanks

EDIT :  OK, I get it.  This is the version of the .dll and mine is also 19.0.0.306

If I right-click the LP- 64 Multiband logo -> about

I get "LP- 64 Multiband Compressor version 1.5"   (same with the EQ)

How does this relate to 19.0.0.306 ?

Hi Paul, I get that within the UI as well (1.5) however if you search your hard drive for  LP64_Multiband_64.dll (the actual plugin you are executing) in Explorer, right click the file, select properties and then the details tab you will see this info. This is the build number so should be the most accurate version information.

Cheers...

I wouldn't use any FX until you freeze the synth. I find this the best way to avoid problems with these things.

Re: LP-64 Multiband performance issues 2013/12/28 22:17:50 (permalink)
Agreed John, it's good practice to freeze the synth during mixdown and this will in fact work around the issue.

However from my perspective right now, this plugin is taking up way to many resources compared to other plugins like Melodyne. I appreciate software Multibands do look ahead of time so they will use CPU greater than average, but how come Sonitus works perfectly fine  and this one just drops beats all over the place. It might not just be a resources thing, it could be just buggy. Then again it could just be me (TBC) but I'm highly doubtful....

Re: LP-64 Multiband performance issues 2013/12/28 22:18:14 (permalink)
Is that behaviour (LP64) not normal? I've always found that plug is only usable when I set up Sonar in "mix mode". I have to crank up the ASIO settings and the buffers for recording and midi. I always though of it as an off line type of effect. Too bad, because I really like what it does.

Well as John says (John meaning the first John as I see your name is John as well, just as well my name isn't John otherwise we will be over-John'd) the workaround is to freeze the synth which is best practice anyway....

Otherwise please try my steps to repro and find out for yourself (and maybe you can tell us what you think).

No problems with dropped MIDI notes here running LP-64 Multiband with Addictive Drums at 128 samples. FWIW dropped MIDI notes usually indicate the MIDI Prepare Using buffer is too low. The X-series defaults to 250ms, which is too low for many systems. The Pre-X default was 500, and still seems like the better starting point.

Dave that was it.

So my setting defaulted at 100, I increased it to 250. All is fine.
I have never needed to touch that setting until now, which is weird, thank you so much :)
LP-64 lives another day (and I learn something new everyday)!

Glad to help, but I think almost certainly you must have changed it at some point; the default has never been below 250. In any case, keep it in mind as you may find that in some circumstances 250 is still too low.

Thanks for your tips, invaluable. Haven't decided what to do yet... I know what I want but it is too much money so I'll look again at the alternatives. Maybe stick with LP-64 for a little while longer now I've got it working, I've got a feeling though I'm going to want to get something better and soon... Too bad about the sales.
